I remember growing up waching Dudley play he was a shutdown defender. I know Carolina has had many other great defenders as well in the past. But would you rank him number 1.

When you acquire two nicknames based on your defensive prowess, I think it's only reasonable that you should be considered one of the best if not the best defender to don the baby blues.

Some called Dudley Bradley "The Thief" and others called him "The Secretary of Defense". Hands down on many occasions during any game, he made the guy bring the ball up the court very nervous.

Bradley may have indeed have been our best, at least position wise . . others that probably should be mentioned :

Bobby Jones . . . denied the ball to his man better than anyone IMO.

Derrick Phelps . . . maybe the best defender of all our PGs.

Brendan Haywood . . . all-time leader in blocked shots IIRC

George Lynch . . . definitely one of our best evers.

Jackie Manuel . . . . he started because of his defense.

Michael Jordan . . . . one of the very few players that Dean Smith ever permitted to leave his man to double another's.

Dr. Steve Hale . . . "give 'em Hale"

James Worthy . . . great defender, he even once disguised himself to look like a Georgetown player that sealed a championship.

Danny Green (Teabags) . . . as solid as they come.

Good job billy, allow me to hand you a atta-boy!

I would add Sam Perkins to the list as well. There weren't many men who went toe-to-toe with Ralph Sampson and got the better of him, but Sam did.

So very, very, true . . anyone that was around to watch him play knows this as fact.

Best Carolina defender? The answer is and was:
1. Bobby Jones
1A. Dudley Bradley

These two are, and likely always will be, the gold standards of defense.

DB was a great defensive "Stopper". Bobby Jones was also great defending both his man and the interior. Finally, my early years favorite was and still is Steve Previs. He was flat out a very, very good defender as well...

What a great clip that brought back a flood of memories. On that night, I was working at Time Out with no customers and a small TV. Now keep in mind that this was before TO was open 24 hours, we served pizza but no veggies, we had beer on tap, and yes we served chicken biscuits torn from breasts. When Dudley stole the ball and dunked it, my co-worker and I started jumping up and down, hugged each other, and then tapped the beer keg. Please don't tell Eddie Williams. Of course, Dudley is my all-time favorite UNC defender.

You guys have mentioned a lot of great defensive players. While Dudley Bradley may or may not have been the best defensive player he was certainly the most disruptive presence I've seen on the court.

Don't know if Bradley is THE best defensive player we've had but that is THE best defensive play ever.

He sure made a bunch of em... sometimes in the same game.

I was lucky enough to be in the Greensboro Coliseum to witness him steal everything but Bill Foster's paycheck in the ACC Finals.. capped off by scooping up a Jim Spanarkel bounce pass at the bounce, prompting a dook fan to throw a whiskey bottle on the floor --- it must not have gotten too close to Dudley or he would've stolen that too :D
