Watching the 93 championship game

First title in my lifetime, and while not the most talented team Dean ever fielded for us, it was one that put all the pieces together and had guys who knew exactly what their role was. Also, the timeout was just karma for the most blatent missed travel in history, but it was also a result of two of the best defenders in UNC history forcing Webber into a double team that even if he hadn't called timeout, would have been hard to do anything out of. We had the lead, and there was no guarantee they would score there anyway.

On a semi-related note, there was an HBO original movie a few weeks ago called Tour de Pharmacy that was a mockumentary about the Tour de France, and Chris Webber was involved and he made a joke along the lines of "Sometimes you just need a timeout" and I laughed for a solid 30 seconds straight following that joke.

Couldn't agree more. That was a true team. And you're right that nobody remembers the obviously missed travel or Webber being trapped in the corner by Lynch and Phelps. Oh well, we still got the title anyway.

I'm watching a replay of last year's football game at Miami right now. I don't know who these people are who upload complete, HD, commercial-free games to YouTube but I'd like to buy each of them a beer.

I've rewatched our NCAAT game w/ UK about 10 times . . what a freaking ballgame that one was.
Is it on YouTube? I hadn't even thought to look.

For anyone unaware, somebody poasted video of the Gonzaga game with the Tar Heel Sports Network radio call dubbed in on Google documents. I'll see if I can find the link if anyone is interested.

Was I wrong for not sharing this with the raidarians?
Probably

How in the world can y'all rewatch basketball games? Like the whole game? No thanks.

I can't watch full replays when I know the ending. But I did watch a video on Youtube that someone put together on the 2017 championship game that was every basket of the game (can't find it now for whatever reason). Condensed the whole game down to something like 15 minutes and you still get to see all the scoring plays and don't have to listen to Jim Nantz fellate himself as much.

Yeah, I don't often watch whole games, but I'll watch selected highlights if it's a particularly good game. I also like to make fun of announcers if I know something big is happening, like in 05, late in the title game Billy Packer says "Who's on Felton right now? The shut down man, Deron Williams" and right after he says it Felton drills a 3 right over him.

Well, now I feel old because I still remember watching the '82 game and jumping for joy when James Worthy got that gift passed to him!

'93 was not long after I started dating the lovely an gracious woman who would become my wife. Her first experience with me and UNC basketball. I literally sat on the opposite end of the sofa from her the entire game and didn't speak a word to her until it was over. I guess when she stuck around I knew she was the one for me!

Anyhoo, that game was also redemption for the loss to Meechigan earlier in the year and a final "STFU" to all the "best recruiting class in history" BS we had to endure that year. The "Fab 5" was highly rated, but in the end they were (like so many "best classes" we see again these days) still not as good as a well coached, disciplined TEAM. Hell, every one on UNC's team knew Michigan was out of TO's, as evidenced by Montross dancing like drunken prom date when Webber called it. We might not have been as talented top to bottom as Michigan, but we were better coached, more disciplined and knew how to handle the pressure.

What I can't believe and probably what fuels my disdain for all things Michigan is that bunch of morons still, to this day, feels like they "won" the game. Sorry boys, you lost. Get over it. The better TEAM won and we have the banner to prove it!

That was one of my favorite moments ever.

If you go back and watch, I think there was a trap in the first half that forced Michigan to call a TO, which at the time didn't seem like a big deal. But as you said, the better coached TEAM knew what they were doing and knew that they had none left.

Michigan fans can say what they want but they were trailing at the time and Weber walked half the court without a call. Come to think of it, a traveling call may have been the better of the two from their perspective

Has there ever been a worse announcer than Billy Packer?

Right. And Georgetown was trailing when Fred Brown did the unthinkable. Chances are, if we play those two games out without Brown and Webber making those gaffes, we still win. The narrative on those game endings has been dictated by the ABC fans and it's ended up with people believing that Carolina was gifted those two championships. That pisses me off. It would have taken big time plays in crunch time for Georgetown or Michigan to win. The odds were against that happening anyway.

Not only would you have to assume that Michigan and Georgetown were successful in those plays, you also have to assume that UNC wouldn't have responded with a big play of their own.

It's pretty cool to me that two Gastonia boys started that '82 national championship game. My mom's from there.

Sometimes it's nice to watch your favorite players go off. I enjoy watching dean work his magic on the sideline. It seems odd to see carolina play and zone defence mixed in. But it's also cool to see similarities from then until now.
When I watched the ending of the 93 games, I remember exactly where is was at. Celebrating in a house full of dookies.
Or maybe it's just mid life crisis.
