We Need You Hicks!

Go to him early on offense and you will see a different player. Bigs need touches early, our guards don't understand that at times.

No one wants to run up and down the court watching you jack up shots.

Good point, far to often our entry pass is late or not at all.

One thing for dead certain! Hicks will start Saturday.

As he should and I'm not suggesting otherwise but it's a thought that would maybe help him get more mins than he is getting now.

It may would help him mentally with his approach to the game if the first 2 fouls of every game was on someone other than him.

But it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

BINGO!! Defense 101!
Don't reach! (eventhough reaching is not a foul, touching is) :)
Move your feet!
Keep your arms straight up, not at a 45-90 degree angle to your body!
I'm sure the staff has tried to teach all of those defensive principles to Isaiah. Some young men just never learn. Isaiah doesn't seem to have any sense of anticipation as to where the offensive players want to go, so he can't beat him to that spot. He's always reacting versus acting. And that's not good.

And he's playing very tentatively right now. This is the worst time possible for him to lose his confidence. It's not like he's in a war zone getting his butt shot off. Just relax and play big fella.

i may be late to the party in saying this, but that is a cool profile pic there.

A few games ago I noticed Hicks defending someone on the perimeter. May have been their SF. Not a big, slow guy. Hicks did a really good job.

Makes me wonder how he'd do in a system like Boeheim's.

While I agree that Hicks might benefit from not starting and being left in after fouling, it's probably too late in the season to start experimenting. Still, that isn't a very big experiment.

As for the Duke game, he will certainly start. It's Senior Day, isn't it?

Yes. We have exactly five seniors this year so our starting line up will be Meeks, Hicks, Britt, White and Coker. Not too terrible of a line up there. We should be able to hang in there with that line up.
As I said in another thread, I'd start that lineup, then first subs I'd leave Coker and White in, and sub out Meeks, Hicks, and Britt for Woods, Robinson, and Maye.....and play that five for the first quarter of the game. Really send a message that the play against UVA from the starters was unacceptable.

Haven't read too much about how penetration is hurting UNC and Hicks.

Guard penetrates and draws help, kicks out to the wing. Wing either shoots a 3 or drives by his guy and leaves Hicks or Meeks to cover him. Granted Hicks doesn't make the best choices every time in that scenario.

The key for Hicks to stay out of foul trouble in my opinion is to limit point guards getting by their defender and the help defender not playing so far away from wing player that he is out of position when it gets kicked out.

I say this knowing that Roy's philosophy is giving up the 3 instead of any other option and that probably won't change.

This is well put. Countless times this year you have seen Hicks sheepishly walk to the bench in foul trouble and Coach Rob say "move your feet" and look like he's about to bounce the clipboard off Hicks head. I don't think it's been a lack of effort or coaching on our end. I just think Hicks is that inept on the defensive end and has the lowest basketball IQ for somebody of his talent level that I've seen in the last 4 decades of Carolina basketball.

I also think dribble penetration has little to nothing to do with the fouls Hicks commits. Overall we do a pretty nice job with dribble penetration.

We all need to keep in mind, he is also fighting thru this hamstring injury. Quit beating him up.

Good point Mike. He's certainly had a tough run but it felt like he'd made major progress on the foul front for a good chunk of the season, without looking at the numbers at least.

So you want to just concede this game? That would be suicidal. We give up more than any other team just by starting our seniors in the first place, which separates us from any other program in the land. But to keep the starters out the first quarter is insane. And I think you know this. Perhaps you're just trying to stir the shit.

Just Google Pinterest and UNC and you will find a lot of great UNC pics. I just found this one but there are many more that are equally good.

Not trying to stir anything. Just frustrated with the performance and perceived level of caring or lack thereof in the Virginia game.

Roy won't do what I'm suggesting because he's smarter than me and gets paid a ton to be a way better coach than any of us. I'd love it if he did it though. I hope that, behind the scenes, he let the team know he was not pleased with that performance in Charlottesville.

I think it's a given that he let them know in no uncertain terms that he wasn't happy.
I truly hope so. Roy keeps stuff like that very close to the vest, so we fans can never be sure. Roy generally isn't one to use the media as a platform to wake his team up, like some other coaches do. Roy does that kinda stuff almost completely in house.

Short turnaround or not, there's not really an excuse for us to get dominated that much by this year's Virginia team. That is a fringe Top 20 ball club at best right now.

he is a senior/ a man..he has to keep his head up when the first foul is whistled..last game I saw Meeks in his face after a foul..so this noticed by all of us-and we all want him to do well

I wouldn't put that past Roy at all. Seems like something he'd do to send a message in a non-State/NCAAT game.

First, I have moved 0on from this UVa game, I just do not think it was a good measure of this team, think it was really clear they just didn't have their legs after that sat game at Pitt and the quick turn around at UVa mon night. I feel like the schedule beat us as much if not more than UVa did.

Now on Hicks, yet another reason I so wish Roy would implement more zone defense, not gonna happen I know but it is a great way to protect a big from those foul issues. As of late what I see Hicks doing is getting caught half way in between and not able to just let it go, sometimes you just have to lose that battle in order to be there to win the war.

By half way in between, there was a great example vs UVa, don't recall the offensive player or the time but the gist was UVa payer was driving from the corner and Hicks steps to him as he should have. But Hicks hesitated, didn't want to risk the foul on the block attempt so what does he do, he tries to draw a very weak charge at the last second and was never going to get that call. You have 3 choices in that situation, go aggressively for the block, give the shot but block out strong for a potential rebound, or just grant the score. But you go half way in between and you are going to get the foul and it doesn't even matter how much contact you make, it is going to draw the whistle, just how the games are called now days. The basket would not hurt you as much as picking up the foul did.

It has got habitual, when he thinks about not fouling he makes his decisions to late and the temptation of sticking his hand in the cookie jar is just to great. he is clearly thinking about fouling directly after picking up a foul so one foul on him usually becomes 2 in short order. Can not let him pick up that second first half foul, if he can't stop himself then Roy has to use the bench in order to protect him for the second half.

Roy doesn't even yell at Isaiah. I think he knows it's a futile exercise.

Benching him when he fouls is also futile.

Just let him play. Pull him out when he needs a rest. Otherwise let him play until he fouls out. If that's 7 minutes or 27 minutes, it doesn't matter. At least he will have the freedom to give it his all for those minutes.

He plays like an abused pet who doesn't know what he's doing wrong but knows he's going to get punished. So stop punishing him.

Great job by Hicks tonight. As a senior it must be extra special. So glad he got to play his game and show his talents.

Just a great game all around for Hicks. On defense, he played positional D and kept his hands up most of the time and therefore didn't get called for fouls. Of offense. I thought he was really impressive and smart, taking advantage of matchups when necessary. Just a great game for him when we needed it.
