A van down by the river
What if we had a thread where each one us nominated a movie of the week? Let's say it has to be something you can watch at home and not the theater, because people got stuff to do (or live in Nebraska, #VisitNebraska). But it has to be something available either for free or inexpensive and most everyone has access to. Say, Netflix or a Redbox.

So when it's your week, you name the movie at the beginning of the week. Maybe start at 12:01 am on Sunday and end on midnight of the next Saturday. Everyone who wants a to make a nomination makes a good faith effort to watch the movie and discuss. Or don't, your call. Or tweak this whole idea, I don't care.

Dammit. This is basically a book of the month club. I am a 73-year old woman who crochets and has cats.

It sounded so much cooler in my head.

I'm intrigued. Might be hard to do a movie a week, but once every two weeks may be doable.

This is great idea for a thread and I believe it would get a lot of traffic and interest . . maybe, even throw in an actor/actress nomination in that or a separate thread. I don't see why the 2 could not be combined. For instance, I may nominate

I typed out a 3 actor thread last week asking for your top 3 movies of those actors, but, I never hit post . . prolly because I didn't think it would be rated a 5 star thread, and that's really all I do. ;)

The movie & actor/actress don't have to be related in any way.

At the change of the week, or if thread goes 3 days w/o a response, then it's time for new nominations.

Years back, I posted a 10 actors/actresses thread and asked what your favorite movie(s) of each may be . . the person may have only had a limited role in the movie, but, it was one of your favorites.

Matt . . I don't mean to hijack your great idea here.

Maybe, just to keep this thread moving . . a Nomination of :

Darkest Hour & Gary Oldman

The 3 actors that I had picked out for my discarded thread were Oldman, Robert Duvall and Daniel Day-Lewis.

I have not seen Darkest Hour, but, I truly want to and soon. I read where Gary Oldman is now viewed as the highest paid actor in the business.

Oldman

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
The Professional
The Book of Eli

Duvall

Open Range
Lonesome Dove
The Godfather

Day-Lewis

My Left Foot
Gangs of New York
Last of the Mohicans

@BillyL I saw Darkest Hour, it’s very good and Oldman is great in it. I’ve seen all the Best Actor nominees this year so far except Denzel, and I’d be very surprised if Oldman didn’t win. As for the highest paid though, I think the Rock may be highest paid, but they do these lists for like “highest value” where you compare how a movie does at the box office vs what you had to pay your big names in the movie, and I could see Oldman being toward the top of that list.

I just looked it up, it says he’s the highest grossing actor of all time which means his filmography combined for the most, between Batman & Harry Potter I could definitely see that

"Now I know I'm pretty, but I ain't as pretty as a couple of titties."

Would a documentary count? I've watched a few on Netflix lately that are pretty good. Also what about a limited series? Something like a band of brothers type thing.

I should think any of your options listed would deserve consideration . .

Solid reference. Gary Oldman is so great he can play a character like that and Winston Churchill and is equally believable as both
He's, without a doubt, one of the top 10 actors ever, in my opinion. To me, being able to really pull-off a true comedy role matters. That's why I have Jeff Bridges in my Top 10, too. Believe it or not, Johnny Depp deserves some consideration. He can carry all kinds of roles convincingly.

I will also add that I have heard some interviews with Oldman, from years ago, and he was pretty unhinged and out there. I remember a clip from the Howard Stern show and they were making fun of his wacky "in-person" persona. Now, he has probably changed, as we all do. But, I recall specifically the audio clip of Oldman, where he was saying something like (use your English accent inner monologue): "I go to theaters and she see people and I don't recognize them. They live in their fvckin' nice house, with their fvckin' kids and it's like 'life comes at you and belts you 'round the head!' I just wanna shake'em around the fvckin' room when I see that shit!" And, immediately after the clip, Howard chimes-in and says "He's a NUT! HE SCARES ME! I hope we're never having him as a guest. I'm calling in sick that day!"

I think Depp is good when he’s trying (Edward Scissorhands, Fear & Loathing, Finding Neverland, 1st Pirates movie) but a lot of his roles over the past 10-15 years he’s kind of phoned it in IMO.

Totally agree that Sam Rockwell is a gem. I am pulling for him to win supporting actor, he was awesome in Three Billboards. He’s been underrated for a long time, but consistently delivers great work.

Ed Wood was awesome, too.

Hijack away. I was just trying to get the ball rolling.

Explain this to me. Are you saying one person would nominate 3 movies by the same actor/actress? If so, how long would we have to watch those movies? Or maybe I'm not following....

That was poor wording on my part, sorry for that . .

Nominate a Movie and any Actor/Actress.

Prolly best if we just stick to a movie . .

I think something that may be smart is see who all is interested in participating, then once we have that and however long the window to watch each choice sort of settled, then figure out a rotation so that it would be like "Ok, this week we're watching @Raising Heel's choice, then next week is @BillyL, then @TarHeelMark and so on and so on"
I like it but we’re gonna have a hard time finding movies you haven’t seen yet.

Great idea, I’ll go first.

By next week, everybody needs to see “Casting Couch; Painal for Blonde Milf.

How about Sharknado?

Attack of the killer tomatoes would be a good one. There was also an obese cross dressing actor named devine i think who made some really bad b horror movies. I watched one downtown chapel hill one night and some guy wrung the head off a chicken then had (hopefully simulated) sex with it. Or maybe that was a frat party.
