What if you were given, tax free, the following amounts, with the caveat that you have to spend it, not save, invest, pay off debt, give to someone else, etc.? Think of it as fun money.

What would you buy or do with:

$1,000

$10,000

$50,000

I'm making the assumption that for each increasing amount of money, I'm also including the previous statement in there. So when it gets to 50, I'm still spending 10 on that thing.

$1,000: Add many items to my DVD collection, along with numerous Lego sets.

$10,000: Go on a trip to NYC to see Hamilton, and then as many other vacations as I could afford to numerous varied locations

$50,000: Buy as many season tickets for Carolina Basketball as I can lock down.

$50,000 - downpayment on a beach house

$10,000 - take my entire family on a kickass vacation somewhere.

$1,000 - lock down NCF Championship Game tickets in Charlotte this season.

The Blumental Performing Arts Center here in Charlotte just announced Hamilton is coming in 2017. I know this because they sent about 25 consecutive tweets about it this morning, and I damn neared unfollowed them as a result.
That's good to know. I could save myself a couple hundred fictional dollars.

With each amount, I would buy a car worth more than the selling cash price I buy it for and that would safisfy the terms of the deal. I would then turn around and sell each of those cars for more than I bought them for and stick all the proceeds in the bank. I would then proceed to pay off about $3000 of debt that would take me down to just my mortgage and living expenses. Leaving $20k in the bank I would put the rest, what should be around $60-70K on paying down my mortgage so when I refi 5yrs from now (I have a 5yr ballon that I love) my pmt goes to near nothing and truth is by the time I have to refi I may have it paid for.

I actually don't need stuff and I hate debt!

Lol @DSouthr I think you broke all the rules - Invest, pay off debt, save. Sure you don't want to donate some?

LOL , yeah J, that is just so me, I just can't bring myself to waste money, have never been able to. I guess life has just made sure that I will not forget that lesson of waste not want not.

True story, I was in LA and our company arranged for Tony Robbins to come in and give us a session, really wonderful guy by the way. IN his standard presentation he asks everyone what their dream car is and ask for hands from folks that were willing to share. Several including myself raised our hands, this was like in 2004. Now folks were sharing Porches, Ferris, Lamborginis, Maybocks and then he calls on me. I stand up and I tell him my dream car is a 1997 RED step side Ford F-150. Now everyone in the room including Mr Robbins begins to laugh, they think I am joking, I was not. He ask me why was that my dream car? My reply was well, Mr Robbins, that is my dream car because I own that car and I have the title for it and even thou I can easy afford something nicer, I didn't need anything nicer. He came up to me after his presentation, he was still laughing, said he had ask that questions thousands of times and had never got an answer like I gave him, he shook my hand and shared that from that point on he was going to tell the story of the guy that said his dream car was a 7yr old Ford truck because he owned that truck and loved it. I thought that was pretty cool!

I don't know. Because of the way he is buying and selling the cars so quickly you could call that hustling. You never said he couldn't hustle and use the proceeds for something else.

"Waste" in terms of money could be subject to one's own personal opinion, correct? Sports tickets, to most women for example, would be a waste of money...whereas it could be considered a special bonding moment for a father and son. #Perspective

$1,000 - Weekend getaway without the kids. Sailing, or maybe a trip to the mountains.

$10,000 - A pair of identical small sailboats to race, play with, and eventually teach the kids to sail when they're old enough.

$50,000 - Build a garage, or use as a down payment on a slightly larger house with a garage.

I'd like to put in another entry, motivated by the discussion over people being overly offended by certain things. This goes for all 3 levels, I'd just be able to do it more as the dollar amounts rose.

I'd use the money to pay for Trump faces and/or Trump quotes to be strewn about the campus of Emory, and Confederate Flags (or Rebel Flags or whatever we're calling them) to be strewn about the campus of Framingham State. I would then pay for a paid vacation day for the "Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer" so they could take the day off - and all the distraught, emotionally scarred, students wouldn't have anyone to console them after having to endure the hardships of seeing things they don't like around their campus.

I guess I just like to watch the world burn.

GOOD CHICK:

$1000- Art supplies so I could paint and paint and paint all the time!

$10,000- Vacation to Hawaii and Tickets to all the Tar Heel games I want to go to.

$50,000- Finish the remodel of my house.

BAD CHICK:

$1000- Stock the beer fridge and liquor cabinet VERY well.

$10,000- Tickets to UNC football and basketball games and all the fun that goes with it (hotels, tail gaiting, drinks, dinner, Tar Heel stuff!!!)

$50,000- Buy me a hot 30-year-old man and go to a secluded island for a month of sex, sex and more sex! LOL

$1,000 -- pay off some of my credit card debt.

$10,000 -- completely new wardrobe. I always buy new clothes one or two garments at a time because the price tag of a huge shopping spree turns me off. Not anymore. I'd spend a whole weekend galloping around ritzy stores to my old haunts (Belk) picking out a full wardrobe for each season.

$50,000 -- one-time bigger contribution ($10,000) to the Rams Club, above what I already give. With the remaining $40,000, I'd get something nice for my mom, my dad, my girlfriend and then reward myself with a kickass Caribbean cruise on Royal Caribbean in the nicest room on the ship. With whatever was left after that, I'd plan a couple bucket list sports trips. Some options would be:
- see Celtic play in Scotland, specifically against Rangers
- attend a game at night in (LSU) Death Valley....I wouldn't wear the opposing team's shirt lol
- buy really really good seats at the Dean Dome for a Carolina - Duke game
- a few other college football stadia

$50,000 is a lot of money, and I'm the very tender age of 26.

hey, maybe we should team up? That way I can buy and then sell cars at a profit, I could drink your booze, go to games on your ticket, and sex up till you ran out of money? PERFECT ! LOL

And why, cause it ain't all about me! LOL

$1000 - without even telling my wife, I would gamble it in an effort to make more.

$10,000 - Take my wife on a nice trip...to a place where I could gamble in an effort to make more.

You dick.

Please notice not one person has pledged a single cent to charity (unless you count the Rams Club).

Also, I screwed up the rules by saying I'd pay off my car (oops). Edited to say I'd buy a class A RV.

For all you guys who are wanting to buy stuff with the money let me tell you a story.

My dad is 87 years old and has been in an alzheimer's unit for a few years now. My siblings and I have been in the process of selling his house and trying to get rid of all his stuff. Last weekend we had a sale that was open to dealers only. I saw his golf clubs go for pennies on the dollar, artwork that he paid hundreds or thousands go for 25.00, woodworking equipment that he paid thousands go for almost nothing. The point I'm trying to make is this, don't buy stuff with your money, buy memories and experiences. No one can take those from you or sell them for next to nothing. The nursing home my dad is in will wind up getting everything he worked his entire life for. Buy something people can't take from you, buy memories. OK, I'm stepping off the soapbox, carry on....

I completely agree. I always choose and "experience" over an "item". Sorry about your dad.

** standing ovation **

Please note that several people did say they'd spend it on a vacation, or on a vehicle (car/boat/RV) that are means to some of those lifelong memories you speak of.
