I've been watching the NFL Network's presentation of all the Super Bowl's, the NFL Films coverage from the 70's and 80's are awesome.

The first Super Bowl I remember watching, and really knowing what was going on was Super Bowl X, Dallas and Pittsburgh, 1976. I think I was in 2nd grade.

It was great watching all the old footage of the games. The NFL was so much more fun to watch back then! It was really interesting seeing how much the game has changed, in terms of what players are forbidden to do now. The taunting, illegal hits, vicious hits, etc., are all there. I saw Fran Tarkenton and the Vikings playing Oakland in SB XI and there were some bell-ringing, targeting hits that were perfectly legal!

Jack Tatum- The assassin!

What was your first Super Bowl?

The first one. I was 6. Me
And my dad were in a crowd gathered around a dept store in rainsville ala. They had a tv playing the game in their display window. I told my dad “i want the red team to win” dad said “no you dont, you’re a packer fan” (a lot of alabamans were packer fans due to bart starr playing at bama, plus my moms fam moved to ala from wisc)

As a wee lad, I had a SB V electric football game with the Colts and Cowboys. I wish I still had it - those things sell for ~$200 on eBay. Anyway, I don’t remember watching the game.

The next year, I can remember kids in Sunday school talking about who they were pulling for in SB VI (Cowboys - Dolphins) but again... I don’t remember watching that game either.

The first one I do remember watching was SB VII (Dolphins - Redskins), as I recall my brother and I freaking out when Garo Y. had his FG blocked and tried throwing a pass that was returned for a TD by Mike Bass.

I do love watching those old NFL films of the early Super Bowls. A few years ago, the NFL channel showed the entire SB I game, which was pretty cool to see how the whole game played out instead of just the highlights.

My dad hated those electric football games. There's no strategy. So, one Christmas, He (Santa Claus) had brought me this:

because you could choose cards and actually play a game based on play-calls, etc.. But, I wanted the crappy metal one where the players go everywhere!

ETA:

I remember playing those electric football games more than the Super Bowls!

I did get a few Redskin helmets and jerseys and we played football in the neighborhoods around where I lived.

I like the topic, but “don’t like” the results of SBs XI, IX, or VIII. I grew up a Vikings fan, and Fran was my first sports hero.

Yeah they actually were pretty crappy. You could never really get them to go where you wanted. The players all just bunched up in the middle of the field most of the time. LOL.

Watch the NFL Films from those Vikings games. Jack Tatum laid a smack on Sammy White that knocked him back into puberty! And, Tarkenton was hit near the goal line, right in the head! The hits in those games are amazing to watch now! And, the players arguing with officials and taunting each other and hitting each other AFTER the plays are over... no flags!

Yeah... they were worthless, really. My dad refused to get one for years. The one he got me was actually fun to play, in retrospect. You chose a play on a card, and your opponent chose an opposition play and when they laid on top of each other, the cards showed who made the best choice.

I actually found a video that explains it all!

I wasn't born yet. I have vague recollections of some. But, the first one I really remember watching was Super Bowl X. I dunno if it was because of the Bicentennial thing, or what. My dad was a Redskins fan, and so I was, too.

My older cousins were like older brothers. One was a huge Vikings fan and one loved the Raiders. I think they disliked the Redskins because Washington was sort of the obligatory team in Virginia. Super Bowl XI was memorable because they squared-off with each other and they were ribbing each other the whole game.

I wouldn't be until 1982/83 that I enjoyed a Redskins Super Bowl.

I did have a football board game where you had to select these round cards for different plays; one for offense and one for defense. Then each player had to flick a spinner to determine the outcome of the play. It doesn’t look as detailed as the one you showed, but it did take some strategy (and some luck), and it was pretty fun.

ETA: you can literally find anything on the interwebz... here's the game I was referring to:

My buddy had this game, where you picked a disk for the play and then it had the Monday night football cast calling the plays.

I think it was probably the 1979 Steelers/Cowboys. I have the first four Steelers Super Bowls on video tape (thanks eBay.) Why won't NFL Films release all the Super Bowls on DVD?

Who remembers the names of the players for the jerseys above???
The good old Sears catalog. Ok, here goes...

Chargers #14: I want to say Fouts, but it may be the QB before him - John Hadl
Pats #14: Steve Grogan
Bears #34: Sweetness
Bucs #12: Doug Williams?
Oilers #34: Earl Campbell (man, that dude was Beast Mode before Lynch)
Jets #14: Richard Todd?
Eagles #17: looks like a QB jersey, but it's WR Howard Charmichael
Raiders #87: Dave Casper?
Redskins #7: Joe Thiesmann
Lions #16: not a clue, but I'll guess... Eric Hipple?
Dolphins #12: its not Marino (he was #13); Bob Griese?
Colts #7: Bert Jones
Broncos #53: Orange Crush defense... Carl McKlenberg?
Packers #17: I can't remember GB's qb back then; I'll say Dan Makowski?
Browns #34: Jim Brown
Saints #8: Archie Manning
Seahawks #10: Jim Zorn
Falcons #10: no clue
Rams #11: Pat Haden or Vince Ferragamo
Chiefs #32: no clue
Cards #17: Jim Hart
Vikes #44: Chuck Foreman
Cowboys #12: Staubach
Steelers #32: Franco

It's kinda weird because, since 1992, the last year Washington was in it, I can barely remember any of them like I could when I was young.

I definitely don't know the number SB with the games since then.

I remember the first one Atlanta played... and lost.

I remember watching the Patriots and the Giants (Eli vs Brady).

Harbaugh Bowl.

I skipped all the Dallas bowls of the 90s.

We had the same answers, pretty much. I listed them above. Randy Gradishar was the Broncos #53

Jim Brown was #32 and retired by that catalog's issue (1977/78)

Ferragamo was #16 Haden was #11

Howard/Harold Carmichael... whatever

It's so strange how I can remember players from 40 years ago, and couldn't tell you the ones in the last 5 years. I can name 90% of the first string 70's Steelers team and I wasn't even a big Steelers fan!

So, I wanted one of these jackets SOOOOOO bad as a kid - a Vikings one, of course. But apparently Santa didn't order it in time, so he must've just picked up one at the store on Christmas Eve or something because I ended up with a Cowboys jacket. A Vikings fan in the 70's with a Cowboys jacket! Can you imagine the horror? My mom has a photo of me wearing it, and you can see that I was tearing up at the disgust of wearing that thing. Needless to say, I never wore it afterwards, and did get a Vikings jacket a few months later. Man, what a traumatic Christmas experience... those scars are still with me. LOL.

Oh, yeah! I had the Burgundy & Gold pair jacket/ski hat shown.

My condolences on the Cowboys ANYTHING.

My first Redskins jersey was 55 (Chris Hanburger, UNC player too)
Then #9, Sonny Jurgenson

Yeah, I took a stab at the Broncos; remembered a few names but not numbers.
I knew Jim Brown had retired but had no clue on the Browns in the late 70's.
Haden was my first guess; so I get half credit, right?
Oh yeah, Harold. Dude was like 6'-8".

I ended up getting 18 out of 24. Not too bad for my old memory. The others that I missed - After googlizing...
Chiefs #32 was Tony Reed, a RB (77- 80); had over 1000-yds in 78... who knew?
Browns #34 was Greg Pruitt. I should've remembered that one.
Lions #16 was Gary Danielson... doh!
Packers #17 was some dude named David Whitehurst. Never heard of him.
Falcons #10 - I forgot about Bartkowski.

Yeah, when I was younger I could've rattled off all the super bowl teams and scores for about the first 20 or 25, but they start running together after awhile.

I've pretty much watched every one since no. 7 but barely remember some of them at this point.

Yeah... I never would have gotten them. I vaguely remember those names now, but, even if you'd given me the names, I doubt I could have put them with the right teams. The Packers, Chiefs, Browns, Lions and Jets weren't really strong in the late 70's.

Starting at top L-R
Hadl plunkett peyton
Williams campbell todd
Carmichael casper theisman
No idea marino jones
Gradishar whitehurst brown
Manning zorn bartkowski?
Gabriel allen hart foreman
Only a Packers fan would get Whitehurst! Between Starr and Farve, all I could recall are Lynn Dickey and the Magic man.

Patriots Packers in XXXI is the first I can remember watching. I was 8, so I imagine I watched a couple prior but don't remember them.

Great game for packer fans! EXCEPT the most critical play of the game was desmond howard’s ko return for td AND I MISSED IT! My wife had some ding bat friend of hers over to make crafts and she decided to taunt me and get in front of the tv and say “am i in your way, am i in your way?” Right at that moment.

As Bill Burr might say, "she just added another reason."

Scott Norwood missing the FG against the Giants...think it was 1990 or 1991.

Ya, that's annoying as all hell. Well done on not punching her out and missing the rest of the game too.

I have a friend that couldn't tell you the first thing about football (which is fine), but pretends to be a huge Patriots fan and demands to be in on whatever we're doing for the games (not fine). Inevitably he starts talking about work, or some other bullshit during the games. And since he has no sense of when is a good time to talk during the games, usually does it on key 3rd down plays or in the red zone.

Are they still friends?

Super Bowl I. I’m very old. One of my brothers and I had been Packer fans for a while essentially because their colors were like our hometown school’s. There was a lot of animosity between NFL and AFL fans, and KC defensive back Fred Williamson, who was nicknamed the Hammer, had made comments about what he was going to do to the Packer wide receivers. Anyway, guy named Max McGee had the last laugh.

ETA: I tried to upload the McGee video but it says it won’t play on anything but YouTube. Sorry.

Yep. I uploaded and wouldn’t play and I can’t get yours to play either. No biggie. Anybody can watch it on YouTube if they’re interested. Pretty cool. McGee got drunk the night before thinking he wasn’t going to play, Boyd Dowler got hurt, and McGee winds up making two huge catches in the game.
