Who is the next 5 star big man who will join the Heels?

Right now, the Heels badly need decent big men. Luke Maye is not cut out to play the 5 position. I know the Heels have offered several good big men in the 2019 class. Which of them do you predict will commit to the Heels?

Baker is the most likely, I think.

If not him...I honestly don't know. Nobody else seems very likely.

Don't care who but someone will commit who is a top 15-20 big man soon. It's not like the 5 spot has overwhelming competition. All of the 3 frosh are at least a year away if not 2 years away from being ready to play 25+ MPG.

I hear that right now there is a 3rd grader in the 99% percentile in height that loves us so we'll see. Looking good for him early.

This was partly my concern signing 3 projects in one class. Take up roster spots and with Roys propensity for playing upperclassmen they may cause high ranked bigs to look elsewhere.

Five-star bigs since the 2009 championship

McAdoo
Hicks
Bradley

Five-star bigs who played like 5-star bigs while at Carolina

Many of us felt that was a big part of the reason for the drought we have been going through. We were loaded with big guys who might be under-performing at the moment, but who could be expected to lock up the starting spots the very next year.

The NCAA mess was another obvious reason. We went after a lot of top-ranked bigs who had good reason to think they would be OAD. They were scared that their only year here could be tarnished by scandal and limited by a possible ban on post-season play.

The other major reason was that Roy has a reputation for taking time to develop bigs. Guys who are convinced they deserve to be OADs don't want to hear that. And with all the handlers around, most of the better bigs are being told they deserve to be OAD.

Bradley definitely played like a (low) 5-star. Then he left.
I disagree. He often looked good, true. But Roy trusted him less toward the end of the season. Marginal 5-star at best. Room for fans to disagree.

I give him credit that he fought hard to get drafted in the first round. How's that working out? Not being snide, I really don't know. Is he doing well in the league?

Zeller wasn't a five star? Surprised if he wasn't. Regardless he had to be right on the cusp and he certainly played like it. Not including Henson in that list? Why?

Zeller was class of 2008. (Ditto Davis.) Henson was class of 2009. I probably should have included Henson.

They were legit 5-star guys, although not right away.

Umm ok but your post said "5 star bigs who played like 5 star bigs" at unc. Just a huge omission to not include those 2.

Actually, I said 5-star bigs since the 2009 championship.

I suppose I could have been more clear that I meant guys we recruited after then, but it seemed clear in my echo chamber.

He's had his moments in the G league but he's getting paid. I just think he didn't like college and he wanted to get his PRO career started ASAP even though he wasn't ready.

Probably right. And from a money perspective, maybe the right decision. I mean suppose he got injured as a soph.

But still . . . he would have been The Man on this team. And the whole team would have been much better. He struggled to squeeze into the 1st round. If he had the soph year everybody expected, he might have been a lottery pick this year.

I wonder which of new guys we would have if Bradley had stayed? Would we have all our current bigs? I suspect not. Would we have Cam?

I think a path way for kids to enter the draft will happen at least by the time the 2020 class is up, it could effect the 2019 class. When that happens there will be a real shift in recruiting IMO because the big time game changer recruits, many which are big time big men will bypass college and what will be left will be second tier big men that need developing before being NBA ready. Kids IMO will then look to programs that develop them rather than the quick in and out of the 1&D and we will be in a prime position because that is what Roy's teams do, they develop kids, it flips the script IMO.

Many suggest that if they can not get the top tier guys that duke and Ky will just take the 2nd tier guys that are not yet NBA ready, I disagree because those 2 programs now days do not feature great coaching and player development, K was a great coach but his rely on the 1&D has taken the edge off his player development and kal IMO just is not a great coach if he can not out talent you. Self will see more kids come his way, Few will get some, we will, Izzo but IMO the 1&D programs will fall back, I don't think K will stay around for that and Kal may see for sale signs in his yard ala Tubby.

So who is our next big man big timer, hard to say until things shake out with the NBA's addressing the 1&D. I do still think Minnesota will be hard to beat for Baker, because of his brother. If I could pick one I would take Carney followed by Baker on my wish list but I think we trail for them.

Gaffney & Baker, IMO....both high on us, both 6'9".

Some of the other kids in '19 have been in the Kool-Aid far too long. Carey, Wiseman...go ahead and fulfill your dreams at dook & uk, one has no place for you and the other has 15 O&D's looking for PT already and out of the top 25.

Can we get one that can join the team tonight?
Standing pat seems like a bad idea right now. I know Brooks and Manley have shown some promise but it's fairly likely this will be a weakness again next year if we don't add anyone. But then there's not a lot of guys left in this class.

Why do you say that?

The fact that he doesn't have an offer despite one of our SF targets being an indecisive flake and the other one being a pipe dream speaks volumes.

We've seen what happens when Roy really likes a kid. Don't get that vibe from our "interest" in Gaffney.
