All in fun to you who was the best. I didn't get to see Walter play at UNC, but I did see Al and he had a smooth looking jumpshot.

Al Wood was an amazing shooter, I have before and would again nominate him as the purest shooter ever. Once he got going this kid could pour in points quicker than you thought possible.

We've had a lot of good shooters at UNC,

Robert McAdoo '72 was a very good shooter. A lot of folks forget his 3 successive NBA scoring titles beginning in only his second year in the pros.

Here's a few names I've thought were pure shooters and I'm sure there are a lot more . .

Jeff Lebo
Williams . . Donald and Shammond
Brad Daugherty
Wayne Ellington
Ty Lawson
Sam Perkins
Charles Scott
Walter Davis
Cunningham
Joseph Forte
Dennis Wuycik

Feel free to add a few players . .

I played in a Pick up game with Al and Candice not to long ago at Carolina Courts , Candice works there, Stephanie Watts played also she is really strong...

Stephanie's brother Brandon plays there all summer until he goes back to play for UNC-Pembroke

If there was a game of horse I would take Harrison Barnes with Wayne Ellington second. Al Wood and Walter Davis could really shoot and score but using the word "pure" I would still take Barnes and then Ellington.

They both could shoot. However, if pressed I would probably take Al Wood over "Sweet D". If you want to talk about the better college basketball player, an argument can be made for both of them. However, Walter Davis could play the game with anyone, anywhere, anytime... He was a great, great player...

It is splitting hairs. Al Wood was probably a little better shooter, but Walter Davis seemed to hit a lot of big baskets.
Wood seemed streaky at times whereas Davis was very consistent. Loved watching both of these guys and there teams play. Seems like both of those guys should have been on teams that won Natl championships. Back then, everybody stayed four years and it seemed like Unc would get snakebit with injuries or run into a hot shooter.

Curious as to how those 2 players matched up over a 4 year career . . I came up with these stats. Notice that Wood's FG% got worse as his career progressed at UNC, while Davis' improved yearly.

....... Davis ............... Wood

Fr. ~ .500 . . . . . . . ~ .604

I'll add Phil Ford, John "Instant" Virgil, and although he's persona non grata, Rashad McCants... in fact I would argue that as far as long-range bombers McCants and PJ would be hard to beat. Of course Al Wood would've absolutely feasted on the 3-point line as well.

BTW: Good call on Big Mac, Billy. Rare to see a big guy who could fill it up from anywhere and everywhere like him.

Al Wood was awesome. I would take a dude like that on the team today.
Sweet D was fabulous, meet him years ago at a sports banquet in Colorado Springs good dude.

The greatest shooting performance I've ever seen from a Carolina player was Donald Williams in the 1993 Tournament. In the second half of the 1992/1993 season. The Donald was pure money and in the Zone.

I would throw in my .02 but the answer is obvious. When I was working on my jump shot in the yard and on the court I watched UNC basketball all the time. When I saw Al on the floor I was impressioned by the way he squared himself, extended his arm and followed through with his fingertips to the hoop. Although I'm now approaching 60, when I shoot baskets, I still keep the same form. Al was the most pure shooter I remember.
