I know that all of us here, outside of the DI lurkers, root for Carolina first and foremost in hoops. But given that Carolina football has been pretty mediocre for the past 60 years or so, do you have a different favorite college football team- one that you watch regularly and follow and perhaps even post on that team's football board?

I actually follow two teams in all sports. I grew up raised on Tennessee football. However, for whatever reason, I loved UNC from a very early age. I can't remember when or why. Still, I was raised on Tennessee football on Saturdays down here. I pull for and follow both teams pretty fervently in football and basketball and even many other sports. It's a little weird I know but it isn't like something I really consciously chose or anything. It is just what happened as I grew up. UNC basketball is pretty clearly number 1 by a large margin though.

Carolina plays Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl- who you got?

If you insert Penn State for Tennessee, that would be exactly me.

I'm hesitant to participate in this thread because unlike most on this board, I post on Blitz and I know what you're up to. I know how irritated I get by the basketball haters and I fear this thread will give their argument credence.

1 - UNC is my team in all sports. The notion that I would root for another team is absurd to me although I realize that there may be folks out there that pull for a different team in football. But my reaction to that is "so what?" Granted, I'd like for all UNC basketball fans to be fans of all UNC athletic teams but if someone chooses only to root for UNC basketball, well, then, I'm glad to have them as a UNC basketball fan.

2 - UNC basketball has very little to do with UNC football's mediocrity throughout the years. This conspiracy theory that's cooked up by Woad and other football diehards is preposterous. I'm not saying that the university hasn't emphasized basketball more - they probably have. But it's because we've proven to be a blue blood. It's not because some mysterious powers-that-be secretly want UNC football to fail. The level of paranoia that exist on the football board is astounding. The football diehards need to realize that we're just as an average program. Just like Minnesota is an average program. Just like Arizona St is an average program. Just like a lot of schools. Please tell the tin foil hat wearing football diehards to bag that ridiculous excuse they like to use to justify the football program's mediocrity. There is no sinister plot to keep UNC football off the map for fear of the basketball program being pushed aside. Just stop.

We are not trying to stir up anything. Just wondering why the football following is so poor. We know some of it is us just being shitty since Mack left. But just wondering if there is a lot of basketball only fans. I know that happens too. I live in SW Va. In Hokie country. It is very common. I mean very common. That they root for VT football. But root for Puke or UNC in basketball. And was wondering if it was the same for our University as far as basketball. I mean the OP and myself understand we are a basketball school. I mean the reason I first started liking UNC was because of basketball.

Montana State University Bobcats and University of Montana Grizzlies from the Big Sky conference.

Play in what used to be known as 1AA.

You may have watched the Griz play North Dakota State the first week of college football since it was the only game on at that time and was on ESPN.

I almost went to go see the Griz play last week at Liberty. They had a night game after our noon game. Glad I didn't go there straight from Chapel Hill. The game was SOLD OUT!!!!!!

Although I'm a Southerner, my first sports loyalty was to the NY Yankees from the time I was old enough to know what a baseball was.

I fell in love with Carolina basketball (and the game itself) when I was in elementary school from marveling at the geometric beauty of Dean Smith's handiwork on the old "Sail with the Pilot" ACC broadcasts, which of course put me good stead with the NC wing of my family

My main football loyalty is to my Auburn Tigers (one of my degrees is from there) --- who thankfully are changing QBs this week. I pull for the Heels next in line, and then pull for anyone (including Charles Manson) playing against thUGA or bama.
And yes, I post on the AU football board.

For the above reason, I pull for AU basketball (which hasn't often been easy) after UNC... but to anticipate your question: No, I will never pull for AU over UNC in basketball heads-up. Carolina basketball is sacred.

Grew up in the East Coast and Michigan and ND were on TV all the time while so was growing up. I'll root for UNC in any sport but I have a soft spot for Michigan football and will always cheer them on. Hate ND, OSU and MSU but not nearly as much as Duke in basketball.

Me too. The OP"s intention in starting this thread is pretty blatant. We aren't UNC football fans vs UNC basketball fans. We're UNC fans, period.
Not in all cases. I know why the OP asked the question. He read my post on Empty Seats on the Blitz. And I answered someone question about basketball fans only. And wondering how many Carolinia Fans were basically basketball fans only. Because there is a lot of VT football fans only around here in SW Va. So no there is no ill will in the thread. Well at least there wasn't when I mentioned it elsewhere. Just trying to figure out why the Football stadium is always empty looking. But believe what you will. And if you still don't believe me. I also started a thread on this forum under Basketball Fans at the same time. GO HEELS

I'm not aware of one- even on these boards. If you are thinking about WB, he is active enough on Radar during basketball season and no doubt who he pulls for.

I am a diehard Notre Dame football fan. Since the early 90s when every Saturday I could watch them on tv, they just kept pulling me in! My love for UNC basketball runs just as deep! People tell me I can't have 2 teams but I always tell them that it is 2 separate sports and I cheer 100% for my favorite team whichever season it is.

UNC in everything! There are no other college teams and pro teams come a distant second! I don't go to football games as much as I like, but I never miss one on TV. BTW: $20 is gouging for parking!

Yep. Only time in my lifetime they weren't mediocre was when they had a legit coach/recruiter(Mack Brown). UNC had one with Butch but they let John Blake and his issues ruin it.

Bobby Bowden always called UNC football the potential sleeping giant of ACC football. A couple years back UNC had the most NFL players in the NFL except Miami and FSU from the ACC. Though at the same time they had not produced an NFL player at the most important position in football until TJ Yates and he is a backup at best. Though I think if Darien Durant was coming out today he would have a solid shot of being an NFL QB because of the evolution of the QB position at the next level.

Fedora is a mediocre D-I coach that is why UNC is just average. Plus I am still a firm believer you have to recruit elite speed/talent at every position to win big with the spread. It's a nice wrinkle to throw in but the name of the game is physicality in the trenches first and foremost. Only teams that pull off the spread at a high national level either come from recruiting hot beds in their backyards or have elite coaches/recruiters. I just prefer physical football instead of finesse football when it comes to maximizing a programs potential.

Really? That is the single most compelling statement ever made to me regarding going premium. I might have to give it a shot.

Now your true colors are showing. You prefer football, others prefer basketball. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Choose to be a unifier , not a divider. In essence, we're all Heels fans.

Maybe you should quit assuming what I prefer. Just because you have appointed youself arbiter of all things related to Carolina sports does not make it so.

I prefer whichever Carolina team is in season. And I feel 100% confident that I attend far more games, revenue and non-revenue, in a year than you attend in a decade. I was born in Chapel Hill while my parents were students. I went to Carolina camps for soccer and lacrosse. I have a Carolina degree. I live 30 minutes from Chapel Hill by choice to be close to UNC. I attend many different mens and womens games, both home and away, in many different sports. I give money to Carolina.

In other words, shut the f up, especially about that which you know nothing.

Perhaps you can point out where I said you weren't a Heels fan, I read my post again and I don't see it. Your need to defend your fandom is pretty so vehemently is pretty telling for a guy who is obviously UNC's #1 super fan.

Insecure much?

Its actually a desire to knock you down a few pegs. Dont take it personally- i try to do it with all the cocky assholes I encounter.

And what you said Archie was that I am a Football first fan. Simply not true, but a typical assumptive post made by the self appointed sherrif of Radar should come as no surprise to anyone.

The point of this thread was to find out if there were actually people who root for Carolina in bball and some other team for football. My assumptiom had always been that Carolina hoops only fan is indifferent to college fooball. Bobby brought up a point I had not really considered, so we started this thread.

And no, I dont think I am any superfan. I love all things Carolina, sports and nonsports alike. The Superfan monniker should be reserved for people like you who watch every game on TV but couldnt find the Old Well without asking someone where it is.

I as you am a UNC fan no matter the sport but yeah, I am more a basketball fan than a football fan. Like everyone else, I love the team I love to win and football has frankly been embarassing for a long time. Football fans that do not like UNC basketball strikes me as strange it is as if they blame basketball for footballs failures. Basketball does not hurt football, if anything it helps football, but don't blame the success in basketball for your own failures in football. Basketball sets the standard of what should be, the football program has not lived up to that standard.

Win or lose I am still a Tar Heel fan in either sport, that won't change.

I am going to join Premium tonight because I still cant believe that there are fans who pull for Carolina in football but not basketball.
