Why do UNC players seem afraid to shoot 3 pointers and to dunk?

I seriously want to know. It looks like they play every possession for a lay up unless wide open by 10 feet.

Why is that?

How many times do they throw away easy points by just not dunking?

How many 3s do they pass up?

I don't understand... truly I don't.

Does Roy teach not to dunk or shoot 3s?

I do think guys should go ahead and shoot. I mean, we are a terrible shooting team but when games are played like this I think open guys have to go ahead and shoot it. We aren't really getting anything else great anyway so shoot it. Even Tokoto has made some open threes this year. I think even taking the shots would loosen things up a bit even if the percentage isn't great.

Probably, and I'm just guessing here and goin out on a limb by taking a stab and really putting myself out there that there is probably and most likely a chance, say roughly 80-90% chance that they are gonna miss. But again fellas I'm going way, way out on a limb and really really putting myself out there on just an educated/uneducated guess. Just a guess!!!

I am at areal loss for words to see how far our once extremely proud program has fallen. I have three kids and they ask me, dad are we gonna win today/tonight? I never asked that question to anyone when I was growing up. Hell, we were completely shocked and dumbfounded if we did lose. Man how the mighty have fallen.

The issue is this team is made up of a bunch of "soft" players. Truth hurts. Losing players like Bullock and PJ hurt, we need more players like that, that are not "afraid".

Bullock was scared to drive. At least he would shoot though.

That is why I like Berry. He will let it fly.

our gameplan for the past few games has been to beat the ball inside and it has been working. Last night our bigs didn't make shots. Games like last night happen, I am glad we are shooting good high percentage shots instead of watching Tokoto, Jackson, Paige, and Britt throw up 3's all night.

Now with that said Tokoto did pass up several wide open attempts that I would like to see him shoot. If he doesn't atleast shoot them the defensive guy isn't going to respect his shot and he wont be able to drive to the basket as well if that shot isn't respected

Our guys are afraid to shoot the 3 because they are bad shooters. The dunk question just baffles me because we have a couple of the best dunkers in the league.

Are we though? Do we seriously have enough of a sample size to show that?

Jackson, Pinson, Berry all shot decently from 3 in HS. Tokoto is sitting on a 35% average this year or something. Britt and Paige 38% each.

Anything above 33% and I am fine with. I don't see why we are afraid to shoot them? We pass up on way too many open 3s. It lets opponents collapse in on us.

It seems pretty obvious to me. They are taught not to shoot. They are taught to keep passing the ball around the perimeter and get the ball into the low post. I don't know if they are relegated to the blue team in practice if the shoot or they have to run sprints or they are chastised or all of these; but, it is perfectly clear that they are taught not to take these open shots. This totally blows me away because our best player, our All American is a great shooter and we do not try to set multiple screens to get him open shots. We just continue to pass the ball around the perimeter and force it inside. I could understand last season when we had JMM to take the ball strong to the hoop, getting fouled or opening up the perimeter. But to have your leading scorer, an All American held to taking ONE shot, a layup for an entire half is just plain crazy. What are we trying to prove? We don't need Marcus against a team not ranked in the Top 50? I will never understand this!

Why do our players not dunk? I don't know. I do know that you tend to do what you practice, so I can only guess that our bigs don't dunk in practice. Are they instructed not to dunk? I have no clue. What is very clear is that all of our bigs like to fade away. Meeks can bang on occasion, but he doesn't have enough lift to dunk after banging.

You gotta' be able to shoot and be tough/jump to take and make 3's and get to the rim respectively. Marcus can shoot if he is open, JP, Nate and Berry should start throwing them up when they are open. When uncontested Brice can jump, Meeks not so much and neither is very good at powering through defenders. Hicks is playing as either a 4 or 5 and can't get up and over bigger post players. James is 6'10" and plays below the rim. Certain Roy has no problem with dunking and taking 3's if the players can execute. Maybe we don't have the right players??

Agreed, should take a good shot, whether that be a jump shot or drive the lane/dunk if better.
