I like Phil Ford a lot and he is my number one pg of all time at UNC. With Ty 2nd, what's your opinion of this.

If he would have gotten that 4th year and it was anywhere close to year 3 I would say yes. But The JET and McGinnis and Cota were flat out awesome. If Berry is as good as he looks like he could be he will push those guys and Lawson- Lawson #4 and Felton #5.

that 09 tournament run was all about ty lawson. No other PG we've had was that dominant and brought us a title. So i say yes. and i thought i'd never bump ford or cota from the 1 2 spots.

For sure. I love Ray. And Cota was a better ball handler and passer. And Marshall was a better floor general. And the Jet was something else as well. But yeah, Lawson is the second best PG we've ever had. He brought us a title. Something that our best PG never did.

Good overview. I agree.

I think if he'd stayed for another year Marshall would have the stats to claim #2.
Just looking at all the responses it's like trying to pick your favourite Victoria's Secret model!

BTW, isn't this an off-season topic for you Smooth? We have April to November to fill in with these.

Lawson is the 2nd best only if Phil and the Jet are tied for 1st.

I think had the question have been who was the most talented then yeah second and I could have even listened to a discussion about 1st before I said nah, it is still Phil. But the question was not who was the most talented, it was who was the best and for me AFTER Phil Ford I am easy going with Kenny "da JET" Smith!

And the reason is I watched Roy nearly have 37 heart attacks screaming at Ty Lawson to play, to just try on the defensive end. Kenny played both ends of the court and was tickled to do so. Ty was really lightening fast with the ball, I would not say I have seen any Tar Heel faster with the ball. But over all better PG, give me Kenny and I would not dismiss Ray or Cota from consideration. Pretty sure some folks older than me could make a case for a couple other guys but I have to believe only what I have seen. Don't forget, TY was awesome in that title run but if you talk in terms of who was best, don't you have to look at more than just one post season of play? By the way, Lebo was not exactly chopped liver, nor were George karl or Steve hale.

Great post and good points about both ends of the court. Regarding Ty delivering the title: I loved him as a player - so fast, and a great finisher and runner of the break. Good shooter too. Do we win the '09 title without him? Maybe, but not likely.

Compare that to Felton, who you rightly mention above. Think about what he was and what he did on BOTH ends of the court, in leading us to a title. Think especially about the two final four games, including great passes, great 3 point shooting, and in absolute crunch time - one or two posessions in a one- possession game for the title, he comes up with a couple huge rebounds, steals, and then seals the deal at the FT line. 100% clutch in crunch time. In that regard you could argue him ahead of Lawson. NO WAY do we win '05 without Felton. Absolutely no way.

I agree there is no way we win in 05 without Ray. But I disagree with the notion that we could have possibly won in 09 without Lawson. Lawson was the engine for that prolific offense. You can say everything you want about Tyler (and I usually do). Tyler was the beast that gave everyone the mindset that we were unbeatable. But make no mistake, for that championship run, Lawson was easily the most important player. You simply could not gameplan for his speed.

Slinger, you are talking about 1 title run, the thread was about an entire career while at UNC. Yeah, he was great in that title run, Donald Williams was great for a title run, was Donald the best ever just because of that one run to the title?

Re-reading what you said in the above post, you define all the traits of the heart of that team as you discuss Tyler but you label Lawson with the title? How do you define Tyler as the beast under the hood yet tag Ty as the engine? Scratching my head over that one boss?

I'm not talking about just the tournament. I'm talking about his junior year - so that's one third of his career at Carolina.

Did we win it in 06 with Tyler? Did we win it in 07 with Tyler and Lawson as a freshman? Did we win it in 08 when Tyler was beasting everybody in his legendary season? No, we didn't. We didn't win it until Lawson decided to take his game to the next level...which he did.

Look, like I said, Tyler is my favorite Tar Heel of all time (probably my favorite college athlete of all time). And because of him, Lawson probably decided to take his game to the next level. So maybe indirectly, Tyler was more important because of his attitude, work ethic and demeanor. But Lawson was what made that offense work like it did. I don't see how anyone can deny that.

I agree and I would say look no further than "toe gate" as a point of reference. Remember, Ty missed several games after striking his foot, mainly his big toe, against the goal support. And iirc, the entire toe nail came off. We won without him, but lost to FSU in the ACC tourney championship.
