Mack is Mr February, a Hall of Famer because he left UNC for the University of Texas, in a state that is more than filled with top talent, at a school with a super history and a 100K stadium and some of the richest boosters in the country. So he amassed nearly unbelievable hauls of top recruits. Now Mack is back at UNC, after being fired at Texas - he's in his 4th season of his 2nd UNC tenure.

Shane Beamer is a young first time HC clearly still learning on the job. He is in his 2nd season as HC.

Which of the two is doing better? Well, last year Beamer defeated Mack to drop UNC into a losing season, and securing SoCar a winning season against all odds. Tonight, SoCar upset #5 Tennessee by seemingly 100 points. Mack has not had such a huge victory in more than a decade, and certainly nothing close in his 4 years at UNC this second time.

So which Carolina made the better hire , not for the press conference at the announcement but for the long term future of the program attempting to rebuild?

Mack didn’t drop a touchdown pass last night (and this is not a knock on Josh, who has been stellar for us), and
Mack didn’t commit holding on a 75 yard touchdown run that negated the score (again, not a knock, stuff
happens).

Longo + Howell/Drake along with Fed's WR/RBs or Josh Downs & Ty Chandler (etc) have been good enough to make us slightly above avg overall. Without those guys we don't make it to the orange bowl two yrs ago, or to nine wins this yr. So could Beamer have landed those QBs? No Howell means the qb would've been Jace Ruder or Cade Fortin and probably a bad record those first two yrs.

Mack injected fan enthusiasm and recruited enough stars to make the offense hum under Longo. Could Beamer have fired up the fans after the pitiful state late-Fedora?

Probably not. A better question would be which Carolinas school makes the right decision now (pay Beamer to stay, politely ask Mack to go, ask Mack to fire some D coaches, etc, for example)

Mack has done his job, but he's taken us as far as he can. We're soft... it's like local Carolinians grew up with hoop-dreams instead of being gym rat, hard-nosed guys who live and breathe physicality. Mack isn't going to change that. Can Shane or anyone else change that? UNC will almost always be a decent school to recruit to, even Fed pulled low-20's classes, so if you can find a coach that will instill a culture of physicality then i'd be ok with him taking over while Mack has guys like Drake and Power Echols on the team.
