Not unexpected that some will be leaving, even the 4 playoff teams will probably have double digit players entering the portal… What is to watch is who gets in and subsequently leaves
The only way I can spin this as positive is that he feels Nesbitt and Copenhaver will be here next yrd, and those guys are slightly better.
Definitely not unexpected as this is the new norm for everyone, not just UNC. I expect UNC to bring in transfers for just near about every position group for 2024.
QB- Maye will declare
OL- losing 3 starters
DB- losing over 4 guys
DL- if Cross gets let go, how many transfer out?
LB- depth is shaky there
WR- a lot of guys, but not a lot of game changers
TE- does Nesbit declare?
I think Dec. 4 is the official date that it opens but that might be different for guys who already have their degree..I expect just like last year…It’s the new normal in College Sports…
I hope Gene Chizik enters the portal. He should start a podcast with Cam Newton. Maybe write a book... "That One Year We Were Good, That One Time"

A lot of the same shock and fear was posted this time last year and Mack was able to pull in a pretty good list of portal transfers. Now can he get rid of Eugene Chizik and add a few other assistants that can light fire under these players. Will definitely need a QB from the portal but will Chip peel his playbook back and open the offense. Not sure if Hampton is eligible to declare but if not he could hit the portal as opposed to staying for the unknown in CH next season. He was under used and under appreciated.
I think fans are slowly realizing this is happening everywhere and will hopefully accept that this is the new norm, whether we like it or not. Hampton is not eligible to declare, but will no doubt have big-time offers from the blue bloods.
One thing Mack has done well so far is work the portal. I wonder how much of that has to do with players already being developed and having a chip on their shoulder from not getting a P4 offer or not playing much where they were at. All you have to do with those types of players is put them on the field.
Of course Mack can work the portal. He always has been able to sell. To talk people into going with him. It's all the rest of being HC that Mack is at best average at that determined how his Texas days ended badly and how UNC is going.
He most defintewoy is not mobile, which means our OL could make certain he gets hurt even more often.
Other than that, he is smart and tough and has a lot of SEC experience. But he simply is not nearly as good as Howell or Maye. Of course, the odds are nearly 0 that anybody good will ever again fall for aging Mack's softsoap BS. Only idiots with power at UNC will keep doing that.
Very different style than what we've been accustomed to these last 5 years as he does not move outside of the pocket. Always had to worry about the QB scramble with Drake/Sam.
Could be wrong, but a part of me thinks UNC wanted to get this done so quickly to prove to their offensive playmakers (who may be considering leaving) that they have someone to run the offense. Will be interesting because there will be, and already are, some really good portal QB's. All eyes will be on Hampton/Tez here in the coming days. Can also make a case they grabbed Max this quick to get guys from the portal to come and play here on the offensive side of the ball.
SEC West to be precise, which is defined first and foremost by brutal defenses. That is a murderer's row for a QB, and he's done better than just OK against it. Nobody will talk about him for Hesiman or as a 1st round NFL draft pick. But he can get the job done next year.
Criswell looked pedestrian when he played this year. But the Hawgs get Bobby Petrino as new OC.
Leonard might do very well at ND.
So the ACC is going to become the minor league for ND now?
Hard to tell in just 31 attempts in 3 seasons. Hopefully he'll get a chance to start.
