Hubert Davis

I think this year's team is a wrap, we have no answers down low. I do believe we have the best collection of guards in the country still. Ian Jackson is having a really good year, Seth Trimble is having a step up year.
, Drake Powell is better than advertised, and EC is still a dynamic floor general. RJ is not looking as impressive as last year, but dude is balling.

How did we blow an opportunity to be really good this year? Washington is a back up big, Lubin looks like he is 6'8, Tyson well he tries hard. Withers looks like the only thing he has improved on is hitting a 3 in the corner from time to time.

This is not a terrible team to watch, but against anyone who has any quality bigs we are the under dawg immediately. I vote they roll the dice on HD one more year, he has a really good class coming in. If Seth sticks around I have high expectations. No way HD doesn't get help down low again next year.
I seriously mean it’s nice to have this positive outlook. Kudos.

But can you say Hubert has made this year’s team better - any player as an individual- or the team as a whole, given the known pieces / players he has - and all their strengths and limitations as individuals and as a team? Has he built game plans and coached them to optimize (get most out of what they are, stretch and challenge them) them as a team? That’s what being a good coach means to me. You see it often at smaller or lesser known programs who compete and win above average / expected level.

I see absolutely none of that with Hubert in 4 years, especially this year. If anything this team has regressed from early on. Maybe that is because through scouting teams can see how to play us and that we have zero inside game or threat. Ok - so what does Hubert do to adjust to that strategically?

All I see or hear is a bunch of “golly gee we need to play hard and smart and outcompete and hope for the best”. Empty BS that no legit high level D1 coach should get away with, let alone what should be a top 5 (top 10 at least) program and job in the nation

He’s had 4 years to show he can be a good D1 coach. I don’t see improvement or learning by him in any area. I seriously ask his supporters who ask for more time for him - what is one thing as a coach he’s improved on in his 4 years or this year? And that includes picking coaches / staff on his bench who can make the team develop, get better ie a big man coach, a shooting specialist coach, defensive coach, etc?

I’m out on Hubert no matter how this year ends - and I guarantee it’s going to end poorly. No way we make ncaa tourney - and likely won’t play in NIT. Making the NIT should be a humiliation for this program obviously, not a goal

Quick stuff (BC game)...

? Anyone that goes to the games that watches pregame warmups…I have seen this posted several times on TOS by different people that warmups are just the guys doing what they want and basically goofing off…Shooting Airballs and dribbling balls off their feet…Also no coaches on the floor…If this is true that is very telling…Basically just not organized at all…Can anyone confirm this as false or true…

that may be a slight exaggeration but generally that theme is correct. it’s a (too) loose environment with not a lot of structure. mirrors the bullshit we see on the floor during games.

Keep in mind this is the same team with a better version on Jackson and Powell not that earlier in the year played Florida, Kansas, Michigan State, and Louisville and had shots to win all 3 of those games
Would we win those games - or even be close - now? I fear not.

We've seen divergent movements within our team.

Seth and Elliot started the year looking like they had really turned the corner. They looked great, but don't seem to have improved much (if at all) during the year. Good preseason improvement but little in-season improvement.

RJ started off in a shooting snide. And every time he had a decent game, we'd sigh in relief, but he couldn't make it 2 in a row. Until now, with 3 games looking a lot more like the old RJ. Off-season regression, but just lately some in-season improvement.

Ian and Drake started off looking like talented freshmen. With emphasis on the freshman part. Especially Ian, who showed a lot of energy but with poor results. Drake was doing better but still in learning mode. For a while it looked like Drake was going to be the freshman who was going to make it. But then Ian got it and started charging ahead, while Drake continued to improve. They've both improved.

Meanwhile the front court was and is nothing to write home about. Has there been any improvement?

My point in going over the obvious is that we've had some in-season improvement, but not across the board. And not a lot (with Ian being the exception that proves the rule).

Nearly all teams improve over the season. But some teams improve faster and more steadily than others. My sense is that this team would beat our November team. In other words, we have improved some. But my guess is that we've improved as a team less than the average team improves.

If I had to bet, I'd bet we'd lose those same early games against good teams, but the close ones would no longer be close.

Needless to say, I'd like to see this team prove me wrong. Starting at Pitt.

At this time in 2022 we were 12-6, on the verge of a 17-4 run to the championship game. RJ was a freshman on that team.
