Quick stuff (dook game)...

spot on this game gary. we are poorly coached, very predictable which makes us easy to defend. what is most disheartening is to see the apathy set in. we’ve got to move on from Hubert and right the ship.
My son and I said the same thing we have to be the easiest team to guard and scout for. Hubert needs to gone. Yes it’s on the players too making bad plays but our schemes sometimes make you wonder if anyone scouted the other team.

Quick stuff (dook game)...

Glad to reply:

1) Would you give Hubert the 25/26 season to begin the return of Carolina hoops to a top level?
As I have shared multiple times now, I am slightly swayed to giving Hubert at least 1 m,ore season. I have addressed several times why, please allow me to not re[pat that now, my thinking has not changed. I want to wait til we have played our last game this season and re-consider this.

Now if I am Bubba, I have already been making use of back channels to gauge interest from coaches that may be more ready to take on a job like ours. If I pull the trigger on Hubert, there is zero chance I would not already have the replacement guy already lined up and ready, it can not be a long drawn out process.

2) If you would not (and you can roleplay Bubba C), who would you realistically* choose as our HC?
Oh if only! LOL My first contact and honestly, I don't think I would have to make another phone call, no shock, it would be to Kelvin Sampson. Give me an hour to sit down with Kelvin and he would be our next head coach, not a single doubt in my mind, no matter how big the check had to be. I would never need to call Jay Wright or Mark Few.
My perception of coach Kelvin Sampson from afar was always very high, and continues to be in regards to his coaching acumen.
Living in Southern Indiana though I have relationships with Indiana alumni and donors, as well as people within the inner circle that paint a much more harrowing picture of Sampson off the court.
He ran a Rouge basketball program at IU, deficient of many rules and ethics we hold as standards at Carolina.
His players were allowed to skirt rules and many were unbecoming college students.
I don't know how much Sampson learned from his time at Indiana and what he allowed to take place, let alone his obvious breaking of NCAA rules. ( Those seem silly in light of what has been allowed last 20 years) but he seems to run a tight ship at Houston.
From afar of course
Taking this into consideration and Sampsons age, I would be a hard pass on him as our next coach.
I think his age and all that Houston has invested as far as facilities and such in the last few years, he isn't going anywhere.
I think you would be wasting that hour of your life.

^ So, DSouthr, two questions for you-

1) Would you give Hubert the 25/26 season to begin the return of Carolina hoops to a top level?
2) If you would not (and you can roleplay Bubba C), who would you realistically* choose as our HC?

* assuming Jay Wright is not interested in returning to the hardwood

If we do have a new commitment to NIL, I would pose this question - What have we seen over the last four years to make us confident Hubert can develop and coach up a team full of good players? I witnessed a preseason #1 team opt out of the NIT and I can’t not remember that happened. This year appears to be another example of a top 10 preseason team that will miss the ncaa tournament.
"What have we seen over the last four years to make us confident Hubert can develop and coach up a team full of good players?" Not enough to be rock solid confident, I hope you didn't expect me to say anything other than that? LOL

But while most were happy with how we played last season, winning the ACC regular season championship, being the #1 over all seed in the last NCAAT, Hubert being named ACC COY... Most seemed really please at all that, most only got pissed when we lost that game to bama. But me, I didn't like the decisions that were made, I was not the happy camper most others seemed to be. I saw no reason we were as small as we were, I wanted Ingram at the 3, JWash at the 4 (or JWit), with Bacot and frankly, I may have started Cormac over RJ at the 2, with Cadeau at the point. Can you see how much longer that would have made us, we would have had a size advantage at every position other than at the point. And as I have said so many times, size matters in sex and basketball! The bigger you are in either, the more you score! LOL

05champs, this was all set in motion once the portal season ended. Hard for me to believe there is anyone that follows this stuff closely that didn't realize that our being so badly under sized was a monster of a problem that required a radical departure from anything we have seen since Hubert took over and who expected that from Hubert?

Quick stuff (dook game)...

Hubert keeps staring this small lineup…Have we won a game with it yet…This program is lost right now…
Kool, I believe the line up we started last night was what so many fans on this site were wanting? I didn't, made no sense to me for a tiny starting line up to get even more tiny. I wanted us to have Jalen at the 4 and either Lubin or JWit at the 5 to start the game, moving Drake to the 3 as soon as we saw for sure Tyson was not going to be the answer, and I would have started Seth at the 2, Cadeau at the point but starting Jack at the 2 would not have upset me either. Just knew that 2 starting guards that are 6ft tall only with a broken tape measure was not a good idea, nor is it now.

Dave & Dunk - I appreciate the optimism and have tried to maintain it thus far as well. I also posted pregame that we shouldn't get our panties in a wad when we get blown out at Duke. Horrible matchup of size and talent on their home floor.

What has really turned the corner on my thinking is that we are on our 23rd game of Hubert's 4th season. We finally saw a zone and a game where we switched defenses. Both slowed dook, at least long enough for them to try to figure out what we were doing.

Size is difficult to deal with on the basketball court, but not impossible. I'll never forget playing against a 7' 2 dude in college (I'm 6'7). You can't just look at the mismatch and walk off the court. You have to figure out how to utilize whatever advantage you have. So I'll ask again, what happened to utilizing our strengths that we talked about before the season began. We knew we were going to be small and we talked about pressing and running waves of people at opponents. What I have seen so far this year is half court sets (actually it's usually just one play) and us pounding the ball into the floor until we have 8 seconds left in the shot clock.

Unfortunately, all of the issues plaguing this team ultimately come down to coaching. From composition of the team, to the way utilize our players, to lineups, to sub patterns, team chemistry, and of course the X's and O's all stop with Hubert.

As I just said in another thread, I take no joy in saying that I believe Hubert needs to be replaced.
First, THANK YOU for such a quality reply, there isn't a single thing in your reply that I can see as wrong. You asked a great question, let me reply,

"So I'll ask again, what happened to utilizing our strengths that we talked about before the season began"

You seem to recall exactly what I was saying pre-season, kudos for that! Full court token to hard press, to hard press and traps for a FULL 40Min of hell akin to Nolan Richardson's plan. I still very strongly believe that would have made a major difference in the results so far this season. The problem Nocal is that was MY THINKING, clearly Hubert saw it differently. Now there havebeen some things that have played in to that, Tyson was/is IMO a buster, RJ slow start shooting, Seth concussion, Cadeau not learning how to stay away from foul trouble and far to risky passes, the same sketchy JWit, Jalen playing so soft far to often played a large part in that but those things if anything may have been helped had we played differently in the way I suggested. Sol where did it go, it din't go any where because it never arrived.

Yes, there are things that can at least help neutralize size but we can agree, that longer guy has a huge advantage, the smaller guy just has way less margin for error. And when it gets to the point that the smaller team has to play mostly half court offense it becomes twice as hard. What does a boxer do when he is facing a much larger opponent, he doesn't go at him straight on and trade blows, he uses his speed, dances, counter punches, he wears down that bigger guy. Not so different in basketball.

To be such a small team we don't have a lot of deadly jump shooters that are consistently deadly, we don't have the guard length to be able to shoot over a lot of defenders, and as a team we are not really quick. To play the way I want you do need a mature developed team, we start 2 freshmen and a soph that honesty needs continued maturation. Can you imagine being a freshman right out of high school, you at 6'7" having to deal with that 7'2" lotto selection in the next NBA draft? You know full well how that will simply wear you down and how it can easily get in to your head.

I am VERY concerned with Hubert's development as a head coach, I expected him to learn from his mistakes more, he may be more hard headed that Roy and that from me is saying a ton. I have not been shy to talk about the short comings I have seen from Hubert, I do not feel he should have got the job, I have been clear about that, UNC just is not a job where we can have OJT for the head coach but here we are, 3.5yrs of OJT and if we stay with Hubert the OJT will still be happening. I said some where over the last couple days that in my opinion it takes about 10yrs of success for a coach to be ready for the UNC job. Your approach to offense and defense have to be solid in your mind, not made up as you go, this is not playing football in a sand lot. But we have started that journey now, should never have been started but here we are, same deal with Matt, hired far to early in his career. UNC has now invested 3.5yrs in Hubert's development, I do feel like we need to be absolutely sure before we waste that investment.

Couple more things I would add, first, I do think we will see a MUCH MUCH different, define that as MUCH BETTER, approach to the portal recruiting, I would at least as I type this like to see what Hubert can do when he is bidding on a more level playing ground. I remain VERY CONCERNED with this staff's ability to evaluate talent and that buck stops with Hubert. For example, I have said for his whole time at UNC that Jalen is a 4, he just is not a guy I want to see defending 5s, just a serous lack of physicality, to easily moved out of position by those big men. Lubin and JWit are much more physical and Jalen can jump shoot when he is confident, he has lost so much confidence playing at a position he is just over-whelmed by. I saw some baby steps in the right direction last night, better late than never, to little and to late for this season, yeah, likely so.

Very fair points, he also led a flawed roster that was awful the year before, with a mass portal exodus find their groove and get to the National Championship game. He had 1 year portal adds last year that meshed and overachieved to many as a 1 seed, and lost a one bucket here or there game to Bama the final 4 squad in the sweet 16.

That would be the conundrum.😆

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Wes Miller looks like a coach that has definitely had his team quit on him at Cincinnati. He has a paid good class coming in, but it is going to be hard for him to last with zero prior sucess and the hot mess this year after paying in the portal, suppose to be good this year to make up for his start, totally going sideways in Cincy.

Careful with "family" wants.
