Quick stuff (BC game)...

Arch, I believe that every player that has played for Hubert loves him as a person, I do not think they respect him as a coach. Every kid that ever played for Dean Smith loved Dean Smith but EVERY kid that ever played for Dean Smith knew they had total respect for Dean Smith, similar can be said about Roy.

Had Dean told his players early in a game that he wanted them to hop up and down the court on 1 leg for the first 2mins, know what would have happened, we would have seen 5 guys hopping up and down on 1 leg! Why, because each and every guy knew, Dean Smith knows what he is doing, you may not understand why but you trusted Dean did. Don't believe me, did not great players play the 4Cs a LOT under Dean, could any other coach have done that and not see players revolt? LOL

Players don't want their coach to be their buddy they want their coach to be a coach, to show them what to do when they don't know, to teach them what they need to know, there has to be a clear and unmistakable line. It is none of the coach's darn business what my favorite cookie is, I need to know what I can do to get more minutes.
That's a bit harsh, TBH, but I get your point.

I heard Dean himself tell us HS coaches at the clinic that when he started out as a HC he had to earn the team's attention, much less respect, by both actions and results. And of course, by that time years later, hell... Dean didn't even have to use a WHISLTLE in practices anymore --- he'd just call an end to a drill in that nasal voice and clap his hands and the entire roster sprinted to the huddle.

While Dean was not a guy to dress players down or berate them, there were consequences for breaking his expectations (ask Mike O'Koren about the steps he had to run for saying too much to a reporter about us holding the ball at dook in 79 --- Mike was right about his complaint, but still... ;))

I've said this before, but what I smell with Hubert's guys is a "buy-in" issue as to the scheme. Look, running screens, patterns, etc is tedious, and if players can't tangibly see what it's accomplishing, then yeah, that's gonna be an issue. I've been there --- my HS coach ran some of the dumbest sh** ever, and no, we didn't buy in.

So, when I started coaching, I did my best to get my guys to understand what we were trying to accomplish, and buy-in followed the results.

A nostalgic 1989 reminder to Coach Davis and Coach Lebo...

What happened to pointing to the passer…Did this fade away with Roy or Hubert…I see RJ always being about himself when he hits a shot…

Truthfully UNC basketball has been unrecognizable since Hubert has took over and every year it gets worse….We had a hell of run though…
That's one of those "little things" that reinforces what your team is supposed to be about. I was dismayed that it gradually faded even under Roy, and TBH, I thought Hubert as an emotionally-attached true-believer would bring it back.

Sometimes as a player there's a tendency to dismiss these little things as silly, but they really do mean something in the long run.

Couldn't agree more Dave. especially the last 7 points listed. We are not fundamentally sound and that ultimately falls on the staff to rectify that and instill those basic principles into the players.

Amen Geth. Could that be one of the reasons that we've gotten such a poor start out of the gate so many times this season? I believe discipline has been relaxed too much under Hubert's tenure as HC.

UNC at Pittsburgh game thread on: Tuesday 28 January 2025

I do not like this matchup at all as the Panthers are bigger height wise at every position. Pitt starts a seven footer and six eleven patrolling the paint and if that is not bad enough both of their starting guards average close to 15 points a game and they both are six three. I have no idea who is going to cover one of the giant bigs because Powell is only six six and Trimble and Jackson are barely six three.

Carolina cannot shoot 30 three pointers and expect to win so the foursome of: Cadeau, Davis, Jackson and Trimble have to constantly go to the hole and either score or get a trip to the free throw line. UNC also needs to get some scoring production from Washington, Withers and Lubin and those three also need to hold their own when it comes to rebounding and not getting into serious foul trouble.

I do not see how Carolina can press the Pittsburgh guards so I wonder if Coach Davis has considered playing a zone against them until they can prove they can hit from the outside.

UNC needs this game really bad and we must hope that grit, skill and sheer determination can offset the home crowd noise and the very big size advantage at every position for the Panthers…

A real debate question—which is better playing two bigs or staying with the spread offense

I will go with 2 hall o f fame coaches for a thousand? LOL Why do I, well has a lot to do with my not thinking i know more than Dean Smith or Roy Williams about basketball.
Here's my new theory....

Dean Smith had a big toolbox. Lots of tools (options), including many he built himself.

Subsequent coaches have mostly picked what they liked from Dean's toolbox. Mainly just using a subset. Occasionally adding a tool of their own devising, or a tool that fits the changing game better - but mostly shrinking the toolbox. Run. Avoid zone. Mainly freelance.

I think the toolbox has gotten too small and maybe the current coaches either don't know how to use the tools that well, or don't know how to make their own.

Just a theory.

What I do know is no matter what you prefer you must bring in players that fit which ever tack you pick. If you elect to small ball and 5 out fine but you better bring in a bunch of knock down shooters. If you elect for the 2 big man approach then you better have the quality big men to make it work. Does this UNC team have either? No, at least in my opinion we don't and that places us dead in the middle of no man's land and that is where good programs go to die a slow death.

This roster is just a bad mix. If you put Washington, Lubin, Powell, Jackson and Trimble on the floor you have a more traditional UNC line-up but where is the offense if Jackson is off. Plus you have your best pg and biggest scoring threat on the bench.

My preference is a true, physical post presence with a 4 who can play bigger than he is (George Lynch, Harrison Ingram). Even a guy like PJ Hairston can be a 4 in today's game if you want to play small. UNC's problem is they have a really small backcourt with RJ and Cadeau but lack a physical frontcourt presence.

Had Tyson been ready for this level we are not having these problems as much. He would have brought some size and was supposed to take the heat off RJ as a a deep threat. Generally the UNC line-up has at least 4 if not 5 players at a size disadvantage, recipe for disaster against teams playing bully-ball. Small ball works if you have multiple guys who can take an opponent with the dribble or hit from deep. If you don't force the opponent to guard the whole floor they get to clog the lane and take full advantage of the size disparity.
