UNC-Bama (Film)

Did this a few times during the NCAA Tournament last year. May do it periodically this year depending on how difficult the process is. But this is how I saw the some of the Alabama-UNC film.

Starting with this poor attempt at icing the ball screen. I'm not sure if Lubin is trying to ice the ball handler or playing in drop coverage. Also poor job of Cadeau as he can't stay connected to Sears, then Sears just bodies him to the paint where he has a 2-on-1 and finishes a pretty easy layup. Seems like there was a lot of confusion all night on ball screen defense.

Miscommunication here between Ian and Seth on what looks like a fade screen for Sears, which the guys correctly switch. But then on the pin down/down screen, there's miscommunication or Seth gets caught top sided leading to an easy slip. Withers a half step late so he can't draw a charge, but a good contest from him. I do think Seth's off the ball defense can improve in general.

Just posting this very poor possession. It looks like there was supposed to be some kind of primary set action. Then 5 seconds into the possession, RJ waves it off? Then picks up his dribble on the wing for some reason and tries a never in history pass to Lubin. And nobody else really made themselves available once RJ picked up his dribble. Simply not good enough.

Extremely poor defense on many levels here. First for me, RJ needs to get on Sears' left hand faster. Sears is left handed after all. So he allows him to drive to his strong hand. Second, really weak help defense from Seth here. Just an arm reach. If you're going to help, get your body in front and really help. This is fake help. Then the reach gets him out of position and his man fades to the corner and Seth gets trapped on a fade screen because he can no longer see man and ball because he had a lazy reach. Withers probably could've been sharper on the help but more on RJ and Seth this possession for me.

Just what in the world kind of ball screen defense is this? How do you get stuck under the ball screen on a hedge and recover? For my money, UNC is really weak in allowing screens. This is one where Ian could've pretty easily worked over the screen IMO and been in better position. He just accepted a very weak ball screen.

The Most Important Hire by Belichick

will be OC. Belichick was an all time great DFC, and his won will be DC under him. The D will be a Belichick D. So the OC hire is the key. I hope he interviews Tommy Rees, who this past season was Browns TE coach and passing game analyst. But Rees was Saban's last OC and before that was OC at ND, his alma mater. So he has big time CFB OC credentials. How many OCs can claim they worked for both Saban and Belichick?

New SoCar OC

is former Bama QB and HC, and longtime NFL QB coach and sometimes OC, Mike Shula.

My guess is that Shula realized that no NFL Owner was looking at him for HC in. a few years so he moved back to CFB be an analyst for Shane Beamer and now gets the promotion to OC. That is a path that can get him another CFB HC gig.
