NET Rankings Tracker

Initial rankings came out several days ago and I believe UNC came out of the gates at #32. After the loss to UConn, we dropped to #37.

A bet I would place all my money on no one guessing correctly, is the current #1 ranked team. None other than the mighty cougars of Brigham Young University. Yes, you read that correctly. I only post this part to see some of you blow a fuse over the science of the NET rankings.

Now I’ll slowly step away to watch the comedy take place. Have a great night. 😁

SMH....

Bert Smith, Tony Henderson, Ted V.
The worst thing that Kay did to us before he left, and he did many, was make Bryan Kersey Head of Officials.
Kersey screwed us on the court and has continued off the court. He knows which us his henchman to send our way :(

Fan Demeanor...

Only watched the game on the big screen, but the dook fans , in my view, have taken things over the edge and a little too far. The closeness and proximity to the floor really puts the fans almost in direct contact with the opposing players, and I certainly don't think our guys need to rub it in after whipping their sorry arses, once again. But, can't say they don't deserve a bit of humble pie served up on them with their antics exhibited the entire game, from warm up to the final buzzer. And throwing water, sodas, and ice on the floor, totally childish and classless. They really seem to act like they are entitled brats. Just makes the victory in their house more sweeter to me, but at some point somebody might get hurt if it goes too far.

Stat Dive (part 26): State of the Game

I acquired all of the Division I team data since 2002, and from that we can observe some fascinating trends and data relationships in the data. This is a multipart series exploring some of that data.

Has the game changed in the last 23 years?

Not much. If you look at the following table, you can see how the stats I reviewed in this series changed. Overall offenses are a little better for a few reasons. First, players are creating their own shots a little more and making them. Second, 3-point shooting has become slightly more popular, and the percentage has stayed flat. Finally turnovers are noticeably down. The converse is probably true, though; defense is not as good.

While the changes are noticeable, they are much more slight than I imagined. The changes that are occurring are most likely due to altered officiating, new rules, younger players getting increased playing time, and more transfers who haven't jelled with their teams as well. The biggest surprise to me that tempo has not changed.

What Stats are Important?

As we all huddle around fresh new brackets next week, we tend to consult certain stats to guide us in making our picks. Here are the main stats in reverse order of how they correlate with Winning Percentage (worst = 0.0, best = 1.0):

Hubert was the right choice

For the first time in three years he has players that fit his style and personality. His coaching has been great this year. Perfect? No, but I can remember all the critiques of coach Smith, Roy, etc, some legitimate and most not. Hubert is over three years 4-3 against Dook and has a 72% winning record (Roy and Dean were an almost identical 77%). He has a final four on his resume. He has gotten great players in the portal and his recruiting is very good and likely will only get better. He has created an environment that is inviting for players to come to and the sky is the limit for him. We are in good hands

As good as he is as a coach (and he is still learning), he is a better man. Like Dean Smith.
