Carolina at Florida State game thread—Monday 27 Feb 2023

Yes I know this will be the third game in five days and the legs might be a little weary but that cannot be a excuse because in the most important game of the year the team has to be fully focused on the job ahead and not even once think about the.next contest on Saturday.

FSU is having a off year and they are only 7-11 in the ACC but they are coming off their biggest win of the season beating Miami in Miami after being down at one time by 25 points so they can score.

The best way to describe the Seminoles is is that they are lengthy. The three starting guards of: Caleb Mills, Darin Green Jr, and Jalen Worley stand at 6’5, 6’5, and 6’6 and combine to score 33 points a contest. I do not know who RJ Davis will be asked to defend but he will be at a big disadvantage and I expect as many teams have recently to single him out to post against.

Matthew Cleveland who hit the winning three against the Hurricanes at the buzzer leads the team in scoring at 14 points a contest and at 6’7 I fully expect Black at 6’8 to be assigned to slow him down.

Freshman Cam Corhem at 6’10 will have the inevitable task of trying to slow down Armando Bacot who in my opinion is coming off one of his worse offensive games of the season missing so many tip ins and bunnies on and around the rim and I expect number five to really go off tonight. Screw all of the tap ins. Get the rock and jam it over and over again.

I like to see Pete Nance also get busy in the paint and help both offensively and defensively like he did last time out against Virginia. 5 blocks were impressive and he and Bacot have to guard the basket like someone who is trying to break into their home. Nance did hit 4 threes for 12 points from the outside but he also got 10 points while in the paint.

Bacot cannot have another subpar game scoring because it is a do or die game.

Since RJ Davis is going to be at least 5 inches shorter than any of his defenders he MUST get to the line by using head and shoulder fakes to get fouls and use his quick first step.

To me next to Bacot bouncing back with a big offensive contest the Tar Heels really need Love to lead by example by taking as many shots as he needs to keep the team in the game.

This game barely holding on to a lifeline to get into March madness is one Love excelled in last season so everyone posting to get Trimble in who does not even look to shoot or Dunn who is like zero for February and wants Love on the bench needs to hope Caleb plays the full 40 minutes and plays like everything is on the line because it is…

20-25 Lemon 🍋 Oreo Cookies 🍪 boxes 📦 delivered to the hotel Carolina is staying at

The last question that Coach Davis was asked during his post game show was about the lemon Oreo cookies that Pete Nance likes. Coach Davis said he had gone to Harris Teeter to get Nance a bag but it was still in his office.

He continued by saying the team was so surprised to see when they were checking into their hotel that there was 20 to 25 boxes that had been delivered. He said he did not know who sent them but he didn’t…

He said he would try one tomorrow and if he got sick he would have four days to recover.

The mystery is now on. Who sent them and how did they know where the team was as staying at…

I will be the first to say this might have been Nance’s best game in a while

I realize Nance has overtaken Love ❤ as everybody’s whipping boy in the last couple of months as Carolina has been losing a bunch of close games but tonight he scored in double digits and had several great assists to Bacot that helped the Tar Heel rally and eventual win the game.

I know it is SO MUCH EASIER for some people to criticize but tonight without his scoring and passing the team does not win so he needs to be given some kudos.,

Past games and performances do not make any difference because it is only the present and future that now counts now…

Discussion
On a night where Bacot seemed to be away at the Outer Banks, the UNC guards stepped up and held off a late run by FSU to win comfortably. UNC had 0.97 pts/poss to FSU's 0.84, but was even with rebounding.

Once again the opponent had few turnovers and UNC attempted too many 3s. In fact UNC has only fallen in love with the 3 on 5 occasions in the last 988 games. However what was unusual was UNC's poor night shooting inside the arc, shooting only 38% there. They've been worse only 51 times in the last 988 games. As well it's notable 3-point shooting display, and it's higher than average assists/FG rate were unusual. FSU was awful from 3, shooting 20%, and only had 0.28 assists/FG.

Hearing from a great source that Caleb Love

is looking to go the professional route after the season. I don't expect him to get drafted, but a two-way deal is possible as well as the international route. Doesn't mean it will happen but this individual lives in that world. There isn't much talk about R.J. Davis or Caleb Love which mean the professional move is less likely. I'm leaning on R.J. Davis coming back. I'm on the fence with Bacot. I am totally divided about what he will choose to do once the season is over. If he does get drafted it will be late in the second round, and that may not even be a probability. Totally up in the air.

Quick stuff (UVA game 2)...

...and that's a start.

The key to beating Tony's teams is to take good shots, stay disciplined on D, and don't do stupid shit. We weren't perfect on the last one (Lordy, some of those forces), but we did enough of that right to get to 70+ points (another key to beating UVA) and win one wire-to-wire.

- This may have been our best defensive game of the season, and the guys put the EFFORT in. Coming out of the under-12, Caleb absolutely stoned an iso in his best sequence on that end in forever... and THAT's what he's capable of. Mando (with one exception) was a beast in help-D, as was Leaky, and RJ did a very credible job on Clark.

- Speaking of D, MAJOR kudos to whoever on the staff had the scouting duties for this one --- we consistently anticipated their screen/flair/curl actions, and most times got to our help spots in time to thwart it --- thus the blocks from the backside.

- And on the D note... when Pete went to the 5 in the first half I cringed as usual, and he was a day late and a dollar short... as usual. But... lemme tell ya, a big ol' fuse got lit somewhere along the line, because next time he turned into Wilt Chamberlain reincarnated, protecting the rim like a demon. And boy, did we NEED that, what with the invented calls that put Mando on the bench.

- In general, Pete carried the day for us at a key time when we were hitting a "danger zone". EASILY his best game as a Heel. Keep it up, big fella!

- Oh, and howz about our Guards hitting the boards? Another key to limiting their possessions. And welcome back, Puff.

- A continuing concern (one that some of you astutely identified in the last "stuff" thread) is our inaccurate passing in general --- not hitting guys where they can do something without recovering.

-- Also, Hubert again pushed the envelope by letting us get gassed in the second half, but fortunately Tony's guys were gassed as well and he called a timeout we badly needed.

- Kudos to Hubert and staff for not only being prepared and getting the guys' attention as to effort, but he used a nifty wrinkle on key set plays in the second half to take advantage of UVA's over-aggressive hedges --- 3 wide-open layups went a long way in holding off any UVA ralliy.

- Finally, make no mistake, when you take the court and Jamie Luckie's not the worst ref in the crew?... Phew!... that's a sign of a rough day to come (yeah Gaffney, I'm talking about you). Hell, #1 for UVA by himself could've earned jail time for the uncalled felonious assaults. So yeah, the fact we overcame that nonsense as well speaks volumes for a strong showing.

Anyway... our shot-selection was (mostly) better, and we thus made more. In general, we played hard, played (mostly) smart, and played (mostly) together. If we can elevate those "mostly"s, the rest of season might be more fun than many anticipated. Better be ready Monday though!... we shall see...
