BY UNC ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS

With baseball season approaching, Carolina Athletics has published information on a variety of fan experience elements that fans can expect when attending a baseball game this season.

BALLPARK ENTRY
Gates and ticket booths at Boshamer Stadium will open to the general public 60 minutes before first pitch.

MOBILE TICKETING
With an increased emphasis on safety, security and convenience for fans, Carolina Athletics is implementing digital tickets for all athletic events, including baseball. Fans will be receiving tickets via email to print prior to arrival or to display on their mobile phone rather than a physical ticket.

All digital tickets will be sent from tickets@unc.edu with a link to your tickets, allowing fans to download mobile tickets into their Apple Wallet (iPhone) or Google Pay Wallet (Android), or print their print-at-home tickets prior to arrival in Chapel Hill.

For more information on digital tickets, visit our FAQ page.

Carolina Athletics encourages fans to download the GoHeels Mobile App for added ease of mobile ticketing. The GoHeels Mobile App is available on the App Store or Google Play Store, depending on your device.

CASHLESS VENUE
In efforts to improve the flow and speed of transactions, Boshamer Stadium will move to cashless payments this season and will require a debit or credit card for purchase of tickets, concessions, and merchandise.

CONCESSIONS AND ALCOHOL SALES
Select beer, seltzer, and other 21+ beverages will continue to be available for purchase at multiple locations around Boshamer Stadium. New for the 2023 season, two new walk-thru-brew setups have been added to the main concourse to improve the purchasing experience! All fans will be required to show proper identification to purchase any alcoholic beverages. Alcohol will be sold until the start of the bottom of the seventh inning and will be limited to two alcoholic drinks per order.

Boshamer Stadium offers a traditional concessions menu, with a few surprises mixed in. Menu includes All Beef Kayem Hot Dogs, Italian Sausages, Brats, Burgers, Bojangles Chicken Supremes, and other concessions classics. Other special treats include Maui WOWI Smoothies, Dippin' Dots, Funnel Cakes, Cotton Candy, and more! Look for our home stand menu specials and exclusive ballpark offerings all season long.

Fans are allowed to bring in outside food and non-alcoholic beverages into Boshamer Stadium.

Assists Per Field Goal

There has been more talk this year about the Assists per Field Goal stat than I ever remember. UNC's average since 1996 has been 0.58, with a standard deviation of 0.13. This season, however, the team is averaging 0.44 assists per field goal. In fact, 5 of the 7 lowest performances have been during this season. UNC's lowest this season was the season opener, with 0.182. The lowest UNC has had since 1996 was 0.172 in the 2009 @Maryland game.

Quick stuff (Miami game)...

...and sometmes the percentages just don't work out.

And that's why they call them percentages, as opposed to sure things. I spent the last thread talking about getting better looks making it more likely to shoot a higher percentage... welp, while that's true in the long run, that "more likely" wasn't likely enough tonight.

- although we took more 3s than I would like ---especially early on --- they were mostly good looks. In other words, there was just no good reason to shoot that poorly, at home, no less. From deep, it was just one of those nights. We even clunked at the FT line--- that is, when we actually got there.

- meanwhile, on the other end we mostly made UM's looks difficult, but welp... it was one of those nights in the opposite direction for them.

- In summary, tonight was a hat-trick of bad trends, and ya can't afford the first two of those playing with a lazy, incompetent scrub zebra crew, who managed to "find" 4 fouls on Mando all the while he was being ridden and WWF arm-locked on every offensive possession.

- make no mistake, that stretch with Mando on the bench was a disaster and created a deficit that cost any chance of pulling this one out later, and folks, I'm gonna call it straight here --- pardon the country expression, but Pete at the 5 is tits-on-a-boar-hog, and that's as nicely as I can say it.

- and Hubert, my brother... I like that you're finally giving bad zebras a piece of your mind, but you BADLY needed to call a TIMEOUT as we were on our way to getting down double-digits. Our guys were tired and frustrated from a bad stretch and needed a reset. Some better use of the bench there would have helped as well.

- speaking of bench, it's hard to expect a kid to come in cold at the end of a half, and I feel for Seth as he ended up costing us a net 6 points in 2 possessions by blowing a layup with an unnecessary hand-switch, leading to a run-out, and then failing to protect the ball on our own run-out.

Finally, I looked up late in the second half and we were sitting at 2/22 from 3. Yikes. And yet somehow following everything i just mentioned, we were within single digits -- even eventually cutting it to 4 with blown ops to be in even better shape. So... I suppose the encouraging thing is that it did in fact take a hat-trick of badness to lose this one vs a ranked team.

Anyway, the challenge now will be to stay committed to improved ball-movement and shot-selection, even though the immediate feedback tonight wasn't what we wanted. With that said, the elephant in the room is that we've spotted the damn field way too much already this season. There's just no more time for bad outcomes...

Let's Go Tar Heels!

I'm going to the game Saturday and I am going to give everything I have to help support my team! I will yell at the refs; complain about turnovers; criticise the opponents; worry about shots early in the clock; wonder why X isn't seeing any PT; celebrate the coaching tweaks that make a difference; laugh at Clem fans; implore Hubs to "take him out!"; and yell until I'm hoarse as we pull out a victory!

If we don't prevail, I will not enjoy the ride home, but I will be optimistic that our coaching staff will figure it out by next game! I plan to approach the rest of the season expecting wins and being certain that the next game is the one where we figure it out! I will then celebrate the Natty or ACC Championship or Hard fought loss wherever it happens safe and secure because I know we have great things on the horizon! WHY do I know it......because I have watched it happen for 58 years and I see the change in recruiting and the attention UNC is getting from the elites! I see the improvement in culture and coaching efficacy! UNC will win with all of us OR without any of us and will do it the Carolina Way!

Every day my eyes open is a Dadgum GDTBATH!

Discussion
With the NCAA bubble getting closer to bursting, UNC hosted Miami with a chance to get a quality win to build to a very weak tournament resume. With the game essentially knotted at the half, UNC game out of the locker room and put on another abysmal performance.

For the game UNC shot 16% from 3, the 6th percentile, and jacked up 47% of their shots from there. Thankfully UNC was 69% from inside the arc, the 21st best shooting performance inside the arc since 1996. UNC also took care of the ball reasonably well. It resulted in a poor 0.88 points per possession performance on offense. UNC also got a 2 possession rebounding advantage.

The cardinal sign that this offense is broken? 0.21 assists/FGM. Only THREE TIMES in the last 984 games has UNC shared the ball more poorly. They've only had 52 performances of worse 3-point shooting.

Defensively they had no answer for Miami all game long, allowing Miami to score 1.00 points per possession despite only shooting 46% from the floor overall.

I was thinking that after the psychological meltdown last weekend, we'd see that the coaching staff had tuned up this offense and gotten them focused on running a team game. The second half showed us that this team and its coaches really didn't learn anything from last week. I would like to ask any of the coaches why, when the team is shooting its nearly all-time highest inside the arc and one of the program's worst games outside the arc, are they still forcing the 3 by taking almost half of their shots from there?

I just don't think this group of players is ever going to figure it out. Their post-season lives are on the line and they still can't recognize why. Their offensive and defensive points per possession are almost exactly equal to last season's team, but they are trending downward this season. I think we are realizing more and more that last season's March run was just a magic miracle a la the 2000 run.

Weighted Vests

There has been so much to write about from yesterday's game, I just don't have the time to pen something on this, so I will post Hubert's comments about having the players wear 15-pound vests in practice Friday:

“Yesterday at practice, at times, I made some of the guys put them on a 15-pound heavy vest. So throughout all the practice, they were trying to figure out why I was singling out certain players to practice with a 15-pound weighted vest. As I told you before, one of the things that I do is I required a guy to stop by the office in the summer, at least three times. During the year because of school and stuff at least once.

“So, they thought that these guys forgot to stop by the office and they were like, 'What's up with the weighted vest.' And I told them, 'This is what we're playing with, you got to put that stuff down.' I said 'All the noise from the phone, the family, the friends, the fans, just put the weight down,' and I said, 'I would like you to play a game without this weighted vest and just allow you to be able to play freely and have fun.' The guys have met a number of times since we played Wake Forest and it showed in the way that they played together today."
