UNC vs Charleston Southern game thread—-Friday 29 December 2023 at Chapel Hill

Let’s make it perfectly clear that Charleston Southern is not a very good team and Carolina should just run them out of the Dean Dome but the Heels have not played in a week since they beat Oklahoma in Charlotte and sometimes the team this year plays down to the opposition.

This contest which will be on the ACC network at eight should be a perfect opportunity for a ton of the non starters to get some serious burn on the court and to display what Carolina has been working on for the last three days since the Christmas break. Personally I would like to see the team work on their fast break and to work on their defensive press.

Again I will try and give a solid play by play and score updates for those who do not have the ACC network, have to work and for all of those many Carolina fans who live out of North Carolina and cannot get a radio feed but want to stay abreast of the score and how the game is going.

Let’s hope for a blow out and more importantly let’s hope no one gets injured with the ACC regular season ready to begin next week…

A quick thought about this team

This is my fourth season of having the blessing and opportunity of covering the North Carolina basketball team at Tar Heel Illustrated. This is the first team I have liked watching at this stage of the season. I really enjoy watching the offensive flow and trying to figure out what Hubert Davis is thinking. He is a very good offensive coach. This is also a tougher team than I have seen in the past. I'm not so sure a couple of these past few teams would have gotten in the trenches and fought it out with Oklahoma. Very positive vibes going forward.

Coaches out and about this week

Hubert Davis and Brad Frederick are at the John Wall event in Raleigh. Sean May is at the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, and Jeff Lebo is in New York City at the Jordan Holiday Classic.

I may miss a couple of names here, but the top underclassmen in North Carolina will be in Raleigh as well as Drake Powell. Jackson Keith, Nate Ament, and Sadiq White were some of the players they saw yesterday. Powell plays against 2026, Cole Cloer today. A.J. Dybantsa and Tyran Stokes will be in Myrtle Beach. I am also curious if there is interest in Malachi Moreno, a 2025 big man out of Kentucky who played yesterday in front of May. The Jordan event is stacked with the best talent in the New York/New Jersey area. Lebo saw Ian Jackson yesterday, and there may be more there that piques his interest seeing how they have going into that market to recruit.
