Coby White, Chicago Bulls agree on 3-year, $40M deal

Coby White has agreed on a three-year, $40 million deal to stay with the Chicago Bulls. White, 23, averaged 9.7 points and 2.8 assists while shooting 37.2% from 3-point range this past season as his role in the Bulls' offense was scaled back. Despite the dip in production, White had a significantly better impact this season compared to previous years. (ESPN.com)

THI News (John Gwaltney)

Today is the end of an era at THI, as longtime staffer John Gwaltney is stepping away after 23 years with the different iterations of what we have become. I have known John since taking over 9 years ago, and he is as reliable and efficient as anyone I have worked with. He has been a tremendous asset to THI and will be missed. Thank you, John, for being an outstanding part of our product. - AJ

RJ Davis this Coming Season

Everybody expects RJ to start at SG. Either immediately or as soon as Cadeau gets his college legs.

Everyone understands that, at 6'0 (maybe), D may be a challenge there. And while he never lacked for effort on D, and while he improved each year, it was never his strong suit. Compared to Caleb, he gives up a lot of height.

OTOH, he has decent handles, and that translates into excellent handles when he moves to SG.

And then there's the question of who plays point when Cadeau is on the bench. Is it RJ or Seth?

All that said, my main question about RJ is whether playing off the ball will improve or hurt his scoring.

We didn't get to see him in catch-and-shoot mode very much in his first 3 seasons. Mostly it was him with the ball - taking a step back, or a step sideways, or just lofting it.

As the primary ball handler RJ had the

2nd best 3pt percentage among starters (after Walton) as a frosh
2nd best 3pt percentage among starters (after Manek) as a soph
Best 3pt percentage among starters as a junior

He didn't take the most shots - that was always Caleb. But he has always hit them at a decent clip. Mainly with the ball in his hands

He did, in fact, play off the ball a little this last season. But nobody got him the ball when he was open on the sidelines any time I was looking, so who knows if that will be a plus for him?

I have no idea whether this change will work to make RJ an even better shooter . . . or not.

What do you think?

The NIT Decision Revisited

I was among those here who was really pissed off when we chose to skip the postseason. After the evident good it did for our 2010 team, it seemed to me both a no-brainer to play in the NIT, and downright disrespectful not to.

I had a few intemperate but heart-felt words to say about that decision.

In retrospect, after seeing all the player shuffles - especially how quickly some of our players announced their departures - I'm wondering if Hubert decided to opt out because the team we'd see in the NIT wasn't going to be much like the 2023-24 team.

I mean how do you get up for the NIT - as a player OR a coach - if half the guys on the current squad won't be on the next squad? Under those circumstances, you're not going to get team building, or a good start for the next season, like the 2010 team did with its 4-1 run in the NIT.

So . . . I'm still disappointed that we didn't get to watch more games. But if that was the reasoning, it makes sense.
