2017 Atlanta Braves Thread (w/ occasional Red Sox talk for Hark)

Okay, damn I gotta continue railing on yankees for a second.

@gteeitup who in the hell decided to name Cola's minor league team the Fireflies?? Couldn't have been a native. Everyone knows it's called a lightning bug in the South.

because columbia hot af wasn't catchy or child-friendly...plus, fireflies sounds better than lightening bugs.

have to say, i wasn't pro franchise and stadium build because i lived through the columbia mets/bombers and it was poorly run, other than discount beverage night while in college, of course.

now, having toured the facility last year, it is without a doubt the best stadium in the south.

@coolwaterunc -- our bullpen is frightening.
Coppy has done a terrific job this offseason, but I wish he would have spent more time on the bullpen. It's atrocious. It has a bunch of unproven youngsters, veterans who were good 8 years ago but suck now (O'Flaherty), or veterans who were never good but somehow remain on the roster (Roe). The only two proven guys are Viz and Johnson, and even Viz had some question marks. It's a mess.

I've never seen Roe do anything good, or so it seems. I miss having reliable guys like Avilan, back before he fell apart.

Need Inciarte and Swanson to get on base in front him and Freeman.
Okay, cwunc, you remember how I was anti-Inciarte for most of last season, right? I came around when he started hitting for average, but even then, I stated a few times that he's not our long-term answer. His new contract supports my opinion, IMO, because you don't pay your starting CF 6 million a year, which is around what his deal tops off at. I get dealing Mallex because that dude is just not a baseball player, but....

Man, if he doesn't start hitting real soon, I'm gonna be right back to square one of not liking him as a fit for this team. A leadoff hitter is supposed to get on, not go 0-12 in a series. He's just a warm body to fill in until Acuna can crack the bigs in a couple years, anyway, IMO. But if he isn't hitting, he's fairly useless to this ball club, both now and in the future. Lots of CFs can play good defense.

As for Swanson, I'm willing to basically give him a pass all season on his hitting because he's a rookie. Yeah, I was mad he struck out with the bases loaded last night, but I'm not gonna form judgment at all on him this season. He's young.

Meh...I'm not worried about Ender. I'm still a big fan of his. He's the type of baseball player that I love, and it just seems like he has that drive and will to win. He'll be fine. I still think he's our CF for a good long while, and Acuna can slide to RF. Whether or not he's our leadoff hitter for the future is a good question to ask, but I think Ender will be around for a while, as he should.

Fair enough. I will say that if Ender isn't getting on base as a leadoff guy, there's really no other place for him to hit in the lineup besides 7th or 8th. He's got no power, so he doesn't fit anywhere else in the lineup.

My opinion on him would be less harsh if he could just run in to 12 home runs a year. But he's a 3-6 HR guy.... on a team that desperately needs more power.

He is scrappy, though, and a competitor. I'll give you that.

If I had to guess, his future is hitting 7th or 8th, like you suggested. Albies is our future leadoff man, IMO, and Ender is just keeping the spot warm for him.

Must be a white guy you're talking about?
Hispanic, but he looks white, lol. In baseball, usually the Latin American players = black players in basketball/football when it comes to the stereotypes.

Latin American players can play any position, are naturally gifted, play with too much "flair," etc.

I'm not even convinced Albies will ever see the field in SunTrust Park. I just have a sneaking suspicion we're going to deal him.

Nice, always good to get another Braves fan on board. Basically, this thread last year devolved into @coolwaterunc and I talking to each other. There's a few long-time fans like @UNC71-00 and @gteeitup, but they're both a bit disillusioned with the franchise these days.... which I cannot blame them for in the slightest the past decade lol.

Impressive that you know a lot about the minor league system. That's difficult for a fan to follow, even when living in the team's market. I don't know if you read all of the thread up until now, but there's been some good baseball discussion, both about the Braves and about the state of the game.

Agreed that Coppy is doing a great job so far. 3B and C are obvious weak spots that need to be improved. Beyond that, the fate of the future will hinge upon 3-5 of the young stud arms coming good and turning into Major League caliber starters to pair with Teheran and (hopefully) Folty. I'm still not sold on Folty and @coolwaterunc still think Folty will turn into our ace of the staff, so we'll see.

Looking forward to talking some Braves baseball! It's understandable that some fans are down on the team. I firmly believe they are doing the right thing with the rebuild. Coppy is trying to set the Braves up for long term success, which is something us as fans have to keep in mind. We aren't going to be the Yankees, Nationals, Dodgers with spending money (we can be top 10, but those teams are just on another level with spending), so the farm system has to be deep, very deep, and that's what Coppy is doing. There is going to be waves and waves of very talented prospects each and every year for a long time. Look at last years draft, Anderson, Wentz and Muller. Then the international crop of Maitan (Next superstar?) Gutierrez and Severino. Those guys are a few years away, but it's just an example of how Coppy is loading up.

3B and catcher are definite weakness's. Hopefully Riley can be the guy in a couple years, but I REALLY REALLY want Machado in 2019. Braves a lot of $$ right now, and I believe they waiting for the right crop to spend it on. For catcher, I was intrigued by Florida Gators catcher JJ Schwarz for this year in the draft, I am not sure how he is doing this year? Not sure if you keep up with college prospects? I think Folty has ace stuff, he just needs to harness his craft, and stay level headed on the mound, then I think he can get there. If he can be anywhere from a 1-3, i'm happy because stud arms are on the way. A future rotation of Teheran, Folty, Newcomb, Allard and Soroka gets me giddy. I hope Wisler and Blair can restore some trade value.

Agreed. I texted my buddy after opening day, "So much for that improved BP I heard all spring". The potential of Cabrera is nice, but he needed to add some veterans that are actually good. I can't wait until Minter is up. Minter, Viz, Cabrera, Johnson, Krol is a decent core (If Minter lives up the billing)

So our Yankees start a series w division rival Orioles today. Back to back series on the road to start the season. Brutal. Today Severino takes the mound vs Jimenez for the Orioles. Hopefully Severino can bounce back from last years piss poor, for lack of a better phrase, performance. Last season he went 0-8 as a starter w a 8.50 era. Finished the season coming out of the bullpen w a 3-8 record and a 5.83 era. Lot of talk about how well he pitched in spring training to earn his starter spot back. Admittedly that wasn't a tough noogie to crack considering our rotation.

Headley and Ellsbury have started the season hot from behind the plate. Combined 12-22 against Tampa Bay. Youngsters Sanchez and Bird look to get going after a subpar start from the both of them.

Baby Bronx Bombers road to 28 continues.

Can't watch the game because I'm at work, and I know it's snowing and all, but........

What in the actual **** are we doing taking Folty out in the 4th inning? Snitker does know our bullpen sucks, right? Right on cue, Collmenter gives up back-to-back jacks.

I forgot we were playing early today. He took him out in the fourth?? WTF? Looking at the score, he wasn't getting destroyed or anything. I'm assuming he wasn't at his best, but you have to let the young guy work through it. I don't care how many pitches he was at. Let him fight his way through the fifth, at least, if he was struggling, as long as we're still in the game.

3.2 IP, 6H, 2ER, 3BB, 1SO, 0HR

And he pulled Kemp to pinch-run d'Arnaud (again, only in the 6th inning). So I guess it's an admit defeat day.

ETA: Apparently, Kemp has tightness in his hamstring, possibly from a catch he made in the 5th inning. So there's that.

I peaked at the box score and ERA's of the relievers that came in the game are as follows:

10.80
9.00
9.00

I know it's way too early for ERA to really mean anything, especially for guys who have only pitched 1-2 innings this year, but still, I found that funny.
