A Day Without Women

What in the actual **** is wrong with this country?

They are paid to start and push these movements. It's all planned. This is what happens when bums and couch surfers find their calling in life. Being a lifelong vegetable just wasn't good enough anymore. But I digress...

this is getting absurd, although now more than ever I am thankful that a certain someone packed her bags and hasn't been seen in these parts for a good while. Just imagine how this thread would go otherwise.

NoVa aren't the only schools closing....

"Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools in North Carolina—a school district that is made up of three high schools, four middle schools, and 11 elementary schools—is also closing in light of A Day Without a Woman. The decision was made after the district found that a significant number of staff plan to strike in solidarity with the movement.

"While the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools values and supports its female employees, the decision to close schools is not a political statement," reads a statement released by the district. "It is entirely about the safety of students and the district’s inability to operate with a high number of staff absences."

This is beyond stupid. Everyone knows women are important to the work force, and shopping dollars, and everything else they're supposedly "standing for". This seems like more a cry for attention than anything productive.

It's gotten way out of control. I really think there are some lab monkeys smarter than our citizens some days.

Yeah, not sure what exactly this accomplishes other than screwing the students out of a day of school. I'm sure the students are happy though.

I will never, ever, ever live in Orange County, N.C. again. No way, no how.

Alamance County? Yes. Orange.... fukk no.

I feel the same way about Albemarle County, Virginia. The most liberal county on the east coast...or very close.

Being liberal in terms of policy, by itself, isn't necessarily the end of the world. But when you're the specific type of "new wave" PC liberal that infests Chapel Hill and Carrboro, it's a double whammy.

No way in hell would I move there. If I ever take a job in Raleigh or Durham, I'm moving to Graham, Mebane, Swepsonville, Prospect Hill, or somewhere way out in the cut. Not a damn chance I'm exposing myself or my family to Orange County "government."

Raleigh is in wake county.

If I knew what counties were, I could probably find a couple in MA that rival that for most liberal on the east coast.

I'd take that bet. Albemarle County voted somewhere in the 90% liberal range in the last election...they are constantly voting to remove civil war statues that "scare" students (a statue of Robert E Lee is being moved b/c it frightens (lol) the residents)...I could go on and on. It's out of control.

To clarify, I meant if I got a job in Raleigh or Durham, I wouldn't follow the traditional route of moving to Orange County (Chapel Hill or Carrboro or Pittsboro) as I'm sure lots of folks do, and commuting East.

I would instead move to a smaller town further away from Raleigh or Durham such as the towns I named, and commute from there. You won't cash me ousside living in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, or Carrboro. I would consider Wake Forest and -- begrudgingly -- Cary.

I know you were joking around, but I'm not sure what the purpose of a county really is. I guess to provide us with more government oversight, because that's something we really need.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but just from personal experience I'd be willing to bet that the traditional route doesn't include moving to Orange county for people who work in Raleigh.

They've already been phased out of use in the North (they're still in existence but no one refers to them anymore). Maybe they serve some purpose in larger states where if you say "oh I live in such and such town" - and people have no idea where that is, giving them a county might help them figure it out.

At least in MA when describing a town someone doesn't know, we simply break it into regions (Western MA, Central MA, and then the eastern side is broken into North Shore, South Shore, and the Cape/Islands). Easier that way than to say whatever county it's in, and then have the person say "oh cool, that towns in Norfolk County.... where's Norfolk County?"

The only time I really talk about the county is when I'm talking about the school system for K-12.. Those are commonly referred to by county (Orange county schools, Fulton county schools, etc.). Other than that I don't ever use it. For some reason unknown to me GA puts the county you live in on your license plate. Maybe @TarHeelNation11 knows the purpose of that.

So we can judge you behind your back but not your face -- aka The Southern Way.

In all seriousness, I think it's cool that they put the county on the license plate. I realize you're not a native Georgian so maybe it's more interesting to me than to you, but I think it's cool to drive around the state (again you probably don't have much need to go down to Middle or South Georgia) and see various counties on tags and be like "oh, that guy's from Columbus" or "that chick is from Thomasville." Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi lists counties on their plates too.

You could be right. I guess I just always figured the folks who live in Chapel Hill but aren't students nor faculty must work in Raleigh or Durham.

So does this also explain the reason for your Cobb county tattoo?

Yeah a bunch of people at my school are pushing this as well. There's going to be a solidarity walk and they're encouraging people to only buy from female owned or run businesses.

In the meantime all the guys will be sitting in lawn chairs, drinking beer, thankful for this marvelous occasion, waiting for the sob story to end.

Seriously, what a crock.

Person County, homie .... specifically, Rougemont. We nearly get paid by the county to own land out here. I can get to downtown Durham in 25 minutes, Chapel Thrill in 30 (never go to Rawley) ... and the only sound you hear are random dogs, coyotes and (if you live close enough to it) the Flat River. Heaven on earth!

I'd really like to know the thought process that went on during the planning session.

Outraged female #1: "How do we stop all of this gender inequality and sexism?!?"
Outraged female #2: "I know! How about we march for the rights of one gender, and tell everyone to only do business with that one gender!"
Outraged female #1: "Genius!"

With respect to owning land in those parts. My friend is from Mebane and has a pretty decent chunk of family land -- more than 10 acres. He said 90% of his land is in Alamance County and 10% of his land is in Orange County, just over the line. He nearly pays more taxes on the 10% Orange than he does the 90% Alamance.

Also, speaking of Person County, my dad played football at Rockingham H.S. (now Richmond County H.S.) back in the day and they used to routinely play Roxboro. That is a pretty sizable trek for a regular season high school football game.

Orange County is brutal.

Rockingham to Roxboro? Holy crap! Hope they chartered a small plane ;)

Speaking of Roxboro ---> the Walmart up there should charge admission, it is a FREAK SHOW. I love to go up there and just walk around, especially on a weekend evening. Bizarre cast of characters from all walks of life. It's quality entertainment.

Roxboro is a shithole, but great backroads that you can duck off 501 and get back on headed for South Boston. Outran many a cop in that speed trap of a town.

Roxboro now has one of the great hidden restaurant gems of the entire Triangle: Brooklyn Eats. Awesome menu, service and KILLER food. Try it ASAP. Be sure to get the pimento cheese hushpuppies appetizer.

Haven't been through there since college (pre-2005)...will make sure to remember if / when I get through there again.

Would love to hear that the town has improved since then. It was BAD when I used to have to go through there regularly.
