Alumni Pickup Game --- Videos + Observations

As Expected, the frontcourt resembles something youd see at clemson or perhaps georgia tech. However the backcourt is pretty stout, without seeing jalek and cam either.
Hey, if we could get Ben Lammers on this team I'd be a very happy man. Dude is a great college player. Clemson though... yeah.

Agree. I'm just not used to seeing this type of post player at UNC under Roy. These guys should be added depth yet they are all we're gonna have.

Yeah. I get being optimistic but when someone says Manley could be our starting 5 I'm both baffled at what they are watching and horrified at the possibility.

Certainly nothing I've seen from him in either his highlights or from yesterday's game would give me any reason to believe he's anywhere near ready for that role.

To give myself a bit of credit-and I remember others saying it as well-when we first saw Bradley there was an immediate recognition of a oad possibility as well as the obviousness of him being a key member of our big man rotation. I almost feel the opposite when I watch Manley.

You have to deal with the cards you have and the unfortunate thing is that the Heels only have Huffman and Manley that are true centers. Yep, I agree ...it scares the heck out of me also but a Bradley or Meeks are not walking through that door this fall. You get no argument from me that Manley is not ready to play at this level, but either Manley or Huffman will get the call at the 5 (by default). My bet is on Manley if his conditioning improves considerably before the start of the season. Can't see Roy putting one of our best players (Luke Maye) at center and geting in foul trouble trying to guard another team's 5. It may be ugly at the 5 spot all season but based on the make-up of the team the Heels will not be featuring bigs down low this season. If they do, they may have a losing record.

That may be the only thing that keeps him from starting at the 5 game one. He may have many eating crow before the end of the season.

I love this quote from Manley that I lifted from another board........

“When you’re putting in hard work every day, and people say things about you, it kind of motivates you,” continued Manley. “People don’t realize the work I’ve been putting in, the support system I have around me pushing me to be better than I was the day before. So, when you have all that, it’s hard not be confident. It’s not cocky, it’s just confidence in my abilities.”

Ultimately, it was confidence in himself, and belief in the North Carolina system, that brought Manley to Chapel Hill.

"I know that North Carolina breeds big men," he said. "In the back of my head, they were always my dream school even before I ever thought I might be recruited by them. Once I went on my visit, there was really no question where I'd be going."

Manley has been healthy for more than a year. At this point it's most likely that he's just slow.
Good grief. "Healthy" is relative coming off somethig like that, especially if it happens when your growth plates are still open. It is a long-term set-back to normal conditioning and development and he is finally at a place where he can progress. Is he ever gonna run like Big Z? Highly doubtful. But will he get faster and smoother than he is now? Absolutely.

We'll see guys. Let's not act like any of us knows exactly how much he has healed. This may just be him, or it may not.

Rewatching this..three things stand out.

Psycho T is still an animal.
I think we have ourselves a baller in BRob. He looked so comfortable out there.
Berry may win POY.
Agree on both counts re: BRob and Joel.
As for Psycho..... yeah, watching the vid makes you realise how great a college player he was... always moving, always going for the ball, able to find space and score so well.

As Steat said, neither Bradley nor Meeks nor Hans nor anybody else is gonna walk through the door to save the day. So ready or not, one of our baby bigs is going to have to start unless Luke starts at the five. And that is highly unlikely, IMO. We'll go into battle with what we have.

So this nonstop complaining about what our bigs aren't and what they can't do is senseless and tiresome. If you want to write off next year as a lost year, that's your prerogative. But most of us choose to be cautiously optimistic. To each, his own I guess.

You're right on Kenny. I think I thought Theo was Kenny a couple of times on three pointers. Oops.

Still somewhat concerned about the freshman bigs. They will need a lot of coaching. And even correcting for bulk I think Brooks was at least an inch shorter than Hicks, but the angle is not the best. Will be interesting to see the team photo and listed heights.
Most of the time when I noticed Huff, he was in a sort of crouch, so didn't look that tall. I hardly noticed Brooks at all during the game, but he looked tall enough on the sidelines.

Of our bigs, Manley and Miller were pleasant surprises - looking better than I expected. But, to be fair, my expectations were lower for them.

Hansbrough could score on pretty much any player in college. Still can, it seems. No shame when Hans beats you. More worrisome is that Isaiah also moved and scored at will over our younguns. He often struggled against merely decent opposition. Then again, that decent opposition had been coached to play D at this level. So the question may be how quickly Roy and his crew can coach up some basic D in our new bigs.

Luke looked fine on O, but he, too, will need to get stronger and tougher on D if he is to play the much bigger role he'll need to play this coming season. Especially if we play much small ball and he's the only big on the court for us.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. We still don't have all our players and the freshmen have a few months to get prepared. I'm very much looking forward to the season.

Arch, kinda have to agree with WW, but think about it, seasoned professionals vs college kids, some barely out of high school, the pros should win if there were big times stakes riding on it. That isn't a slap at our current players, just realization of how good those NBAers really are.

I got this from an entirely different website and did not know where it came from.

To be entirely clear here - I have NO access to the premium board associated with this website, nor to any other premium board elsewhere. Saw this info posted elsewhere without a link or credit given. It appears it has now been removed from that website, I cannot even find it again.

MikeIrbyUSA or anyone else Please remove it if this is in violation of Board Rules.

It's all good bro I wasn't saying you did. I used to do that as well find a snippet and post then someone would take it down and inform me it was premi info even though I didn't get it from a previous site I completely understand and apologize if it seemed like was coming down on you

Thanks TTHR0806. And no, I didn't feel like you were coming down on me at all.

I just quoted your post so the Mods would know I read it, and make clear I had no idea that was Premi Info from this, or any board. I act in good faith and I think the Mods know that, I never would purposely drop Premi from ANY board on any other board.

I probably need to quit posting "interviews" etc. as if it is decent stuff and NOT "ill gotten gains" it would probably have already been posted by other folks. I get up late so I am always "behind" others wrt to media info etc.

Once it is posted by someone it is already out so I would think there would be no conflict at that point.

But what do I know?

I'm beginning to think that our best lineup may be Joel, Brandon, Theo, Luke, and Manley/Brooks. That leaves Jalek/Cameron/Kenny/Seventh/Brooks/Manley off the bench.

Perhaps, but his offense is light years better than Kenny's has been to date. Next year's team must have reliable scoring from the SG spot, IMO.

Light years? Well, I don't believe I'd say that. I'm already on record predicting Brandon will make a big leap this season but barring injury I would be shocked if he started over Kenny.

We still don't know how well B-Rob can shoot. As good as his ball handling and driving looked, if Kenny can shoot better and play better D he will start I think (or Cam will). Berry should be the primary creator whenever he's on the floor, and Theo can also penetrate. So I think we really need shooting and defense from the other players. For that reason, I think B-Rob and Felton could lead the second unit.

Oh, I'd be willing to bet that Kenny starts too. That's how Roy operates. Kenny will start because of his defense. But we simply can't afford to get minimal scoring from the SG spot next year. If Kenny doesn't display more confidence in his jump shot, he will lose PT to Brandon and Jalek, and rightfully so.

We have too much scoring to replace to allow a one dimensional player to get major minutes.

Yeah, I agree, scoring from our 2 has to pick up big time to off set the scoring we lost from last season's group. I do think Theo and Cam can some what offset what we lost with Justin but making up those points we lose from our inside guys last season is a taller task and I think we are going to need to make up some of that from our 2 spot. So yeah, Kenny is going to have to step up on the offensive end, be more willing, IMO he was hesitant to shoot last season.

If Kenny doesn't Jalek is not shy to score at all and I do think BRob shows a big step up from last season. I am not as worried about BRob on the D end, I think some added weight and strength will greatly help him as a defender. Hard to tell from that scrimmage but seemed to me he may have begun to fill out that frame so I have reason to hope. I did feel late season BRob came in and helped us as a defender much more than earlier on, he was just so lite that he got pushed around a good bit.

That might be who starts the game. But it's going to be Joel , Cam , Theo , Luke , and either Felton or Williams finishing games and getting the most minutes. I see Brandon as the 7th guy.

Ya'll said we couldn't win last year without shooting from the 2 also! I kept telling you we just need scoring and it doesn't matter where it comes from. This year is no different. We will get scoring from the 1 and 3 just like last year. One of our bigs will develop enough to keep the D honest and non-traditionals like LM at 4 or TP slashing from the wing will augment our shooters (JB, KW, CJ, BROb?, Jalek (shooter/slasher), Platek, etc)

Nobody will replace JJ, HIcks, Meeks, and TB by themselves, but our O will keep on running and scoring.....BOOK IT!

Its Good to be the King!

Wait - what? If you are saying BR as a FR was better than KW as a FR then maybe. Otherwise please explain.

Care to quote the post where you said that about Bradley?
