When my kids were younger and still at home, we used to go to a drive in a couple of times a summer (yes, some are still out there and this one actually now has the largest screen in the entire country). On Friday and Saturday nights, they would always show three movies with the first being a G, the next being a PG13 or R and the last being a more serious R or horror flick/supernatural type stuff. They broadcast the audio over FM, so you could simply sit in your vehicle, but most would bring lawn chairs that you put in front of the vehicle and some type of boombox for the sound. Because everyone around you had them as well, it actually sounded quite good. You also could bring and eat your own food/drinks if you bought a food pass upon admission (alcohol technically wasn't allowed, but no one cared so long as you didn't act out and you drank from a cup). It wasn't cheap, but was a great value when you realized that you were getting two or three first run movies, all the good food you could eat, not paying a baby sitter, etc.
We'd generally go early and let the kids play on the playground before dark, watch the first movie and put them to "bed" in sleeping bags in the van between movies at intermission and then we'd get to have a "date" watching the second movie. When they got older and it was appropriate, they'd stay up and watch as well. In all the times we went, never made it to the third movie as I just had no interest or knew I'd fall asleep for sure. Good times, thanks for the memory jog.
