Berry/Pinson Appreciation Thread

Hard to imagine what we will be like without them.

Which is not to say we won't be trying from now until November.

Huge shoes to fill.

Great careers, great examples of what should be college basketball student athletes and 2 of the best representatives of UNC you will ever find and a big thanks to all of the UNC seniors that made up some great teams over the past 4 years. Thanks guys .. GO HEELS !!!!!!!

Great careers. Joel is as tough and competitive as any Heel I have seen and watching the growth of Theo over 4 years has been a true pleasure. I’ll miss watching these guys but I’m glad we got 4 years of enjoyment.

Thank you Joel and Theo for deciding to become Tar Heels, and more importantly for staying all four years when so many others leave after 1. You brought as championships and memories that we will have forever.

We really were blessed to have had Joel and Theo and all the memories they have given us, it has been a great four years and some of the best memories of my time as a UNC fan. There really will never be another two like Joel and Theo, it can’t be said enough that they are two of the great ones and UNC was made a better place because of them. The greatest part is that what they did and the impact they had at UNC will last forever and you know what, they always will be National “dadgum” Champions!!

The great thing about being a Tar Heel fan is that we have the 4 year players like Marcus Paige, Brice Johnson, Meeks, Hicks, Berry, and Theo that will always hold a special place in our memories. How fortunate we are to get watch these players grow and develop over time into great college players and fine young men. Theo and Joel will forever be a part of back to back title game teams and the 2017 National Champions! They join the list of all time greats with Cunningham, Rosenbluth, Worthy, Jordan, Montross, Lynch, Lawson, Hansbrough, Felton, and others that have brought so much to UNC and to the fans of the UNC basketball program.

Put it this way and I think summarizes how a lot of us felt today watching the game. It was pretty clear in 2nd half that we just didn’t have it and would lose and it frankly wouldn’t be close. Most fans would turn off the TV and move on. I’m fairly certain in saying that many of you, like myself, sat and watched until the final buzzer out of pure respect for Joel Berry and Theo Pinson. Great basketball players but even better young men.

Zactly. Hurt like hell for those guys, and I know they broke down in locker room. But if we look back at the big picture - WOW - can they both hold their heads high!
Think of all the joy and fun they have brought fans..... great play, fun to watch, funny, hearts of lions, GREAT players...
and so great at how they went about it - you couldn't find two more respectful and respectable players....
and think of how they delivered the hardware last few years (NCAA title, ACC title, etc)
I hope after a while they can scrub this game from their minds, and reflect well on all the GREAT things they did. They are unique, all-time great players, and I think in many ways taken for granted.
I look forward to having them around the Heels program and family far into the future!

Thanks for sticking with us when others wouldn’t give us a look. Thanks for the N.C. too.

This is what it's all about right there, the Carolina Family and two great young men truly showing support for two peo It can't be said enough that the bond that our guys share truly is unlike any place, it is something truly special and makes being fans that much more special. We really are the luckiest fans in the world to have had such great men play here and the greatest part is that Joel and Theo like Marcus and Brice will always hold a special place in Carolina history and most definitely in each of our hearts, as they really have left an impact on us that can only make us think back and smile for all the happiness they have given us.

Right on and I reiterate what I wrote in the wrap-up post, Frank.

And funny, I just heard one of the commentators on TV say Joel was one of the great college players of the last 20 years --- a fact that is amazingly still lost on some UNC fans.

Theo has a great run and was such a unique player for us. He was a difference maker in all facets of the game.

That being said, Joel Berry is the 2nd best point guard we have had at UnC behind Ford given his personal success, as well as team success we had during his tenure. Stats also support him being a top 10-15 player in program history. He wasn’t the prettiest or the most flashy, and he has his shortcomings as all players do but he was a winner and he gave us everything he had, every single game. I truly don’t think many of us here grasp how special that young man was.

Thank you to 2 guys that stuck with Roy and UNC during some tough times, helped us win another Championship and became 2 of the players that will be remember for a long time for any fan.... Also will put Justin in their as well

Both had great careers and probably the best 4 yrs of their life. I hope both graduate in May and then I hope both get drafted and would love to see Theo on the bench as a coach one day. God Bless them both.

If that was said about him, it would be because he was the tournament MOP last year and stayed for 4 seasons. But with no All America selections, and only one First team all ACC, I think that’s a stretch. Unless that list of great players is really really long....

What an incredible run that we fans have been blessed to have these last 4 years with Joel and Theo....Thanks for the memories, and thank you both for your commitment, dedication and leadership during your 4 years in Chapel Hill....It's truly been a pleasure to watch you guys grow and lead by example....Good luck in your future endeavors, and I will always remember your career in baby blue and your accomplishments of winning yet another banner for all of us Tar Heel fans....

...annnd, as if on cue. SMDH.

That was no stretch whatsoever... it was a spot-on comment from someone who knows enough about basketball to recognize everything JB brings to the floor.

Right. Dookbag barely deserves a response, but we could start with JB leading team to two title games, and scoring over 20 points in both** - nobody has done that since Bill Walton. Probably like 40 years ago, right?

How is it a stretch? Is reading that difficult? The announcer said best COLLEGE player (that means his FOUR years in college, obviously). He's not saying "most gifted player this year or in any one year in a quick stop rental in college before heading to the NBA - then there would be plenty of guys from Dook and UK on that list, but so what? Durham and Lexington are short term addresses these guys use to showcase their game for the NBA draft, but what does this have to do with those colleges or with the player as a college player? Does Dook or UK take pride in being a short-term stop for the OADs on the way to the NBA? Why? Its not like the kids develop or learn a significant amount at these schools. Or not like any long term bonds, friendships, LEADERSHIP, sacrifice, is achieved. No family or brotherhood. Use of that term by Dook is downright comical.

Tell ya what, Dookie - go ahead and make a list of college players in last twenty years with the accomplishments over their college careers, that meet or surpass Joel's. It'll be hard to name any. Most players who accomplished half of what Joel did, had moved on to the NBA.

dude come on lol...JB is my favorite player but he was not a better player than Lawson or Felton, and it's a legit debate if he was better than Marshall. I'll take JB in my foxhole before anyone, but he did not have the talent, athleticism or skill level that Lawson or Felton had. Lawson and Felton were dogs too, but that gets overlooked because they didnt have to outwork everyone to compete like someone like Berry or Hansbrough did, because in reality they were so much better than everyone they matched up against that they didnt need to play with the same tenacity Berry did to compensate...I look at it like comparing Thomas Davis to Luke Kuechly..TD is everyone's favorite player and he is no question the heart and soul of the team, but he's not a better player than Kuechly

That's your opinion and you can't go wrong with liking whomever you listed. But JB is way better than you apparently perceive. He's not just a guy who outworks people. He is a tremendous player, and if you have the eyes to appreciate everything he does on the court, that becomes clear. Ask Ray how good JB is --- those two dogs go head up all the time during the summers and Ray's still playing in the league. He'll tell you. Ask Butter how good JB is. I can also tell you this, as much as the coaching staff brags on Joel, there's stuff they don't usually say publicly that is even more complimentary.

Folks can have no-lose arguments over the best UNC PG (behind Phil, of course), which speaks great things about our program. But wherever you come down on that, the narrative of pigeon-holing Joel Berry as merely a tough, hard-worker misses the mark by a country mile.

Other than that, I'm not sure why you even brought up Kuechly? Dude's a freak and has probably surpassed Butkus as the best Inside Backer ever to play the game... and that's not something I say lightly.

Because the notion around Panthers fans is that TD is the toughest and hardest working player because he's overcome all the injuries and he plays with such a ferocity. Kuechly plays with the same fire but it gets overlooked because he's so much more talented than everyone that it looks effortless. that was the comparison I was making with Ty and Felton. Ty looked like he was coasting half the time and still was a whole different speed from everyone on the court
