Berry playing the 2?

If it keeps our best player a little more fresh throughout the game, I am all in for giving it a shot.

Not quite that clear, but ok. Dave, my point in that sarcastic post was that any such position switch (other than the situational stuff I discussed further down in the thread) would be downright silly and I highly doubt Roy has that in mind... and sure enough, if the article is taken in context that's not what was being proffered.

I'll just say, scroll down the thread and read my more detailed responses before you draw any conclusions on what I'm getting at. Hell, anything that recreates the backcourt interchangeability in transition we had with JB and Marcus makes perfect sense and is something I would hope/expect Roy to do... as are set plays that feature JB's ability to put the ball in the hole as a finisher. The fact that Jalek is a natural PG --- and 7th has played the position here --- simply affords those options when one of them is paired with JB.

That, however, is (thankfully) a far cry from the sort of position-change it was made out to be.

In Joel's frosh season, I wanted Joel to start at the point and Marcus to move over to the 2 and the common reply I got was NO FREAKIN WAY but I simply saw Marcus as more a college 2 and knew his being at the 2 made it easier for him to look more for his scoring and not have to direct the team as much. Near end of that season, thou Joel didn't start, Roy began going to him a lot more and Marcus moved more to a 2 role, worked really well until Joel was sat down and Nate came in for a tuff second half stretch that ended that season. Then the next season Joel does start, Marcus is the 2 and we get to the natty game. That was the 2 PGs on the floor look that Roy loves and the better shooter of the pair looking more for scoring ops from more a 2 spot.

Roy very clearly likes the 2 PG look, we fans should as well because it is darn effective. What I do like about 7th, like about Jalek as well, they are rim attackers, they will not hesitate if they see an opening like Nate would. Joel will attack as well but he is a little smaller, strong sure but smallish. Cool thing about 2 PGs on the floor is the lines get morphed as to who is playing what on any given trip down, kind of an ongoing change Roy has gone thru over the last few years in that he strongly looks for kids that can and will play multiple positions.

I am wanting folks to understand 2 things, first you can not really judge 7th by that freshman season, we saw glimpses of what that kid has but he had a huge adjustment that he had to go thru last season and he just had to have the time, his confidence slipped but in time folks will see that kid as a warrior, you are gonna love him before he is done. Why do you think Joel took the kid under his wing this off season, because Joel can see it guys, he can see this kid is special.

I do see traits in Joel that cause me to feel he can be a very good PG, I saw a ton of development in him as the season moved on last season and from what I hear he has had a really good off season so I am excited to see if he has turned that corner. I tried to explain to folks before his frosh season that Joel Berry would be named in the same sentence as Ty & Ray, most did not agree, spent all last off season telling folks that Kenny could be a really good player for us and most didn't want to hear it, I am now saying watch out for 2 guys that were frosh last season, BRob and 7th. BTW, I think both will develop in to OUTSTANDING defenders and especially 7th Woods, that kid will become a shut down defender, wait and see!

100% with you on the two-PG thing. There's an adage in hoops that a lot of 1s can play the 2 but few 2s can play 1. If you have a Marcus Paige who can score well enough and defend, that makes for a great 2-man. And as Joel alluded to, it gives you another guy to push the ball the ball in transition. As I said above, that is mostly what the interview was about.

And of course you know that you and I were on the same page about JB needing to start from game-one as a freshman (and we were right). That being said, I realize you have an affinity for 7th being from your neck of the woods, but there's a huge difference. JB and Marcus both came in with the instincts to play PG at a high level. It just doesn't come naturally to 7th. Again, I think it's helpful he got some experience at the 1 but he's a natural 2 (going back to that old adage).

I'll just put it this way: Had JB left for the NBA, there is no doubt who our starting PG would end up being this season, and his last name is Felton.

Yeah...let's take the best PG in basketball and move him to the 2. Good god.
I may not be as skeptical as you, but I'm somewhat skeptical.

I can see some of this in order to keep Joel fresh and to give 7th and Jalek more PT at point. And it will be interesting to see if playing off the ball improves JB's shooting. But unless it is a big success, it's hard to see it happening in crunch time.

Then again, that's what Roy did with Marcus. Of course Marcus had foot problems, and we needed him to score a lot. Not sure those concerns apply to JB.

I guess the question is, if you are going to put 7th and Jalek in at point to give them the experience, and move JB to SG to give him some rest, why not just let JB rest those few minutes on the bench and give guys like Kenny and Brandon and Andrew the PT at SG?
