Best Burger in the state.

I’ll put pretty much anything on my burger. I love the regular stuff - onion, lettuce, tomato. But I’ll do that weird shot too - avacodo, pineapple, whatevs.

And this is the first I’m hearing of pushback of putting mayo on a burger. I thought it was pretty standard. It’s not like we’re talking about miracle whip.

But I love mustard. Probably my favorite condiment. So I’ll do mayo and mustard at times.

Yes to mayo on a burger . . ! It just won't be Hellmans . . Dukes or Kraft only.

Ketchup & mustard tho sometimes a small squirt of Sweet Baby Rays sweet & spicy barbecue sauce in place of the ketchup works very nicely.

I'm gonna throw another one at you: Do all of you automatically put cheese on every burger, or do you sometimes leave it off and go with the hamburger? Most of the time, it's a cheeseburger for me, but every now and then (especially lately), I like to go no cheese and enjoy the meatier bite of the hamburger. I feel like hamburgers are greatly underappreciated. It doesn't have to be a cheeseburger every time.

I'm cheese on it every time, unless it's one of the fancy burgers from Publix you can buy with cheese already in the middle.

Yes for mayo for me. Hellmans, not Dukes. I only use Duke's when I'm at relatives in NC.

My go-to burger base is cheese (pepper jack or American, never cheddar), mayo, and bacon. Bacon is mandatory. Occasionally I'll add lettuce or pickles. Occasionslly I'll substitute tangy BBQ sauce (Sweet Baby Ray's like @BillyL suggested is a good choice) instead of mayo. I do like a fried egg on my burger as well. I love when the runny yolk gets the bun just a bit soggy.

The best burger I've ever had (talking all states, not just NC) is from The Windjammer at Isle of Palms, SC. @gunslingerdick probably has never eaten there because he's weird. It's the best burger I've ever eaten and I've eaten a lotttt of burgers in my life lol.

That place probably has a sanitation grade of D- so no, I’ve never eaten there. But Ive drunk plenty there.

On a side note, and I’m not sure how long you e been vacationing there, but just a couple steps down used to be Dough Re Mi pizza shop. I used to cook and bar tend there until they tore it down to build those condos you see there now. its a good thing too because that place used to get wilin’ out back in the day. We’re talking naked broads and lines of diesel on the bar. One night I was working, a dude got knifed in there. I had to give a statement to police. Worst part was that the news came to cover it and got a shot of me walking to the police car with a couple officers. I almost lost my real job over that. You wouldn’t think so but the IOP is seedier than you’d figure.

Guys there is only one way to enjoy a burger and that is Carolina style ! Chilli , slaw , onions and mustard and black pepper and if it is a Melvin's burger I go with the original no cheese as when Pat Melvin was owner you could not get cheese it was not an option. That my friend is a burger you will never forget ! BTW Melvin's has hot dogs though I have never tried one. Growing up we got a Carolina style burger and a coke ! You could not get fries as they were not offered and I don't believe they offer them now . You don't mess with perfection. If I could get you all together I would buy everyone of you a Melvin's burger and a coke and you would love me for it and hate me for it ! For once you have had a Melvin's burger everything else is just a burger ! As the Judge would say , just the facts young man ! And those are the facts !

Two slices of cheese pretty much every time

My wife likes to be adventurous with hers sometimes.

Mayo is ****ing gross. I'd rather eat a dogshit burger w/o mayo, than a cheeseburger with mayo.
Now you can go a different route than Carolina style. There is a dirty greasy spoon on Gate City Blvd in greensboro called Beef Burger been there about 55 yrs and been that long since that used any paint or did any cleaning . They do have a tasty burger though. Super Burger with mayo, lettuce , Tomato, onions and pickle and that combo just does something to the burger , somehow makes you forget that you saw roaches crawling on the counter (true story) ! Buddy and I got off work one saturday afternoon and after a super burger combo we went to get a refill of tea and saw 2 baby roaches crawling across the counter.

I've only been vacationing there for the past 3 years. And dude, live a little and get a burger from Windjammer. I'm telling you, you'll be floored. It's so damn good. You owe it to yourself.

Can’t believe Al’s in Chapel Hill has not been acknowledged.

This board has gone to pot.

I don't have much to add except I like all the burgers. As long as you don't overcook that thing they pretty much all sound good to me. Greenville has a few good ones: Pop's Burgers is a landmark here, and there's a relatively new upscale restaurant called Dickinson Avenue Public House that has an incredible burger. It's the same chef/ownership as Christy's Euro Pub, which sells:

*Bison Sliders… three Carolina Bison sliders cooked medium, smoky ghost pepper jack cheese, house bacon and tomato jam.

These things are *awesome.

We stopped at a greasy spoon in mullins sc years ago and ordered burgers. When we asked how they came the girl said “burgers only come one way around here darling, with chili mustard and onion” so thats how we got em. Not bad but to me it just tastes like chili on a bun. The burger flavor gets drowned out.

this thread has me drooling.
I was disappointed in Chuck's in raleigh. It's by the famous chef with the midas touch, but they are overthinking things. Bad Daddy's in Raleigh is good.

No way man, Cookout by far is the best fast food burger.

One semester as a college student will change your mind on that. I can't even look at cook out food anymore.

If five guys counts as fast food then that is definitely the best fast food burger. Or jakes wayback burger

I can't think of a more overrated restaurant than five guys.

The only thing wrong with Five Guys is the prices, but I'm actually glad they're as expensive as they are. If they were cheaper, I probably would have had several open heart surgeries by now. It keeps me from wanting to go there as much.

Fat fellas in Newport... In my opinion they make an amazing deer burger I even copied the recipe. Deer burger meat with cow fat to hold it together. Finely diced jalapeno peppers, A-1 burger seasoning... Or season how you like. Then mix the peppers and A-1 burger seasoning into the deer meat. Cook or grill like you would a regular burger. Then add pepper jack cheese to finish it off. That's some good eating there

Someone said Pete's in Reidsville is good. I have been there several times and I like it but it is just a little premade patty. If Melvin's open next door to Pete's that would be the end of Pete's ! Same with Hops or you insert the name and it is game over ! The best burger for 2.45 and tax is game plan you can't beat and someone found a stat on Melvin's that they sell about 2000 burgers a day ! Man they are the real deal. When I retire and go back home I am having them for Breakfast , lunch and dinner.

Starting to think this is a pump and dump scheme lol

If you guys are ever in Elkin stop and eat at Harry’s after you stop and say hello to me of course.

That would be me. And, yes, they are pre-made, but they pre make them on site using real beef, not the pink slime crap places like McDonalds uses. Family owned business that has been around for decades. Interestingly, the guy who opened it also opened up a place down the road called PG's. they serve breakfast and lunch and it, too, is slammed with business. Well, several years ago the guy and his wife split and she got PG's and he got Pete's in the divorce. I believe their son now owns both again, or at least has some stake in both.
Anyway, like I said, it is more of a greasy spoon kinda burger joint anyway, not the gourmet type like Hops and some others. Just one of those good, cheap burgers you can get and go and not feel like you just ate a wrapped up piece of plastic.
