so finally this end all greatest comic book movie EVER came available on amazon to rent so i watched it last night. I dont get it. At all. I mean its alright i guess, for a kids movie (which is who must’ve written it) Its not the best movie i’ve seen this week let alone this year and its NOT the best superhero movie, not even top ten. Simplistic predictable corny plot with HORRIBLE acting (god those fake accents) even if the guy is a tar heel fan. Good action sequences and hot women boost it from a 2 star to a 3 out of 5.

Is he wrong though? At least about the plot? I haven't seen it yet, but Marvel movies have become so cookie cutter that you can almost quote the dialogue without even seeing the movie. I'm hoping they will get out of that rut in their next phase.

I personally thought it had a compelling plot that felt different than the rest of the Marvel movies. Part of what made the plot compelling for me was that there was a villain that had depth and motivations that I could understand (Marvel is often criticized for lacking in the villain department, but this movie definitely has a good one).

I know the cookie cutter criticism is a popular one with Marvel in large part because they all have to fit with whatever else is coming, but this one is much more of a standalone than they tend to be. I also thought tonally it was very different than most Marvel movies, which tend to have a lot of quips and things like that, where this one was very light on comedy (though there was still some there).

I am also a big fan of Ryan Coogler (the director and writer who had previously made Creed and Fruitvale Station), and I think the cast is one of the strongest top to bottom that the MCU has had.

Admittedly, I'm a fan of the MCU, but I thought Black Panther was one of the best movies Marvel has made so far. With that said, I get people are going to have differing opinions on anything, and it's fine if someone doesn't like this movie (or any other comic book movie for that matter), but I personally really enjoyed it.

It’s a black thing, you wouldn’t understand.

Haven't seen it and won't see it because super hero movies are pretty dumb, but....

From what I heard from my friends who eat, breathe, and sleep Marvel comics/movies [they're white, just for sake of disclosure], they liked the movie for sure, but they didn't really approve/appreciate the fact that the majority of the audience seemed to side with Michael B. Jordan's character, who is, I'm told, more of a Machiavellian "ends justify the means" type of character? The audience sides with him more than siding with the true super hero in the movie who is more just?

That's all I got.

I Think what happened is like with avatar. For months i hear how great a movie is then by the time i rent it my expectations are through the roof. If i had seen bp in ththe theatre i admit i would have liked it okay but i was expecting more.

Not surprising in the least. That’s the producers’ attempt to make the movie and star character as black as possible. The only thing they could have done better was cast Wesley Snipes as the panther.

Now I’m starting to get why black folks were so jazzed up about it when it came out. Because I sure as shit didn’t see that same reaction from the black community when Iron Man came out. And isn’t Robert Downey Jr. black? At least 33%.

I wouldn't say the majority sided with Michael B but there was a good percentage that did. I think (at least speaking for myself) what most people felt with his character was an understanding of his point of view and why he was the way he was. I'm trying to stay out of spoiler territory as best I can so I'll tag the next bit,
but a big thing in the comics and this movie is that Wakanda is isolated/hidden from the rest of the world, and it has thrived for centuries in the shadows thanks to this rare metal that has led to super advanced technology. Michael B. believes that instead of being in the shadows, Wakanda should use this advanced tech to basically rule the world. His motivations for doing so are more clearly explained in the movie, and I don't really want to give it all away because he gives a great performance.
. In my mind, there is a difference between understanding the antagonist's motivations (which most people did with this movie) and saying that they are right (which some did). With that said, there are people who will agree with any villain out there. There are a percent who think Thanos' plan in the new Avengers movie to wipe out half of all life is a good idea.

I saw this movie in theaters and you never really heard any big pushback about him going black face. I wonder why that is? Maybe because they put the joke within the movie that discusses it? Or that the movie is so silly that no one cared?

Either way, that movie is funny af. I love it.
There was some slight pushback at the time (and some semi-recent pushback, I recall Jamie Foxx saying something about it recently), but the bigger controversy that the movie generated at the time was the "full retard" scene, which actually did get some heavy criticism. But I think the context of how they framed the black face in the movie, where the joke is both "look how stupid actors are" and "all the rest of them think he's ridiculous for this," made the whole thing ok with most people. I mean, he got an Oscar nomination for it.

Similarly, the Always Sunny crowd largely avoided large scale controversy when they similarly had Mac doing black face for the Lethal Weapon episodes.

There was a lot more pushback, but people relented when Tom Cruise told them to **** their own face.

There was talk for a while about giving that character a solo movie, and while I thought he was great in it, I don’t know he could sustain a movie on his own

I don't know if he could carry a movie on his own either, but he was the best part of that movie. A spin off of that character and Matthew McConaughey's character together would have been awesome though.

I legitimately believe that Matthew McConaughey revived his career off of this role. Prior to this he had been doing the whole "rom com leading man" thing and was making a lot of bad movies, but he started taking more unique roles that he wouldn't have necessarily been considered for, including this one. And as a result, we have gotten some pretty great performances

I saw this flick on a Disney Cruise in March because it was "free". It was blah. There is a big lul 3/4 of way in. The African technological hub an magical elements was a little too much science fiction as well.

Vastly underrated. Liked it better than bp for sure.

Lol bout 15min in i told my wife “kids gonna grow up and kill bp who will come back to life for an end all battle and in the end he will bang the chick and open wackyland to the world”.

You know what would’ve been epic? The cia agent shoulda been a hot blonde white girl that bp falls in love with.

Part of it is they were making fun of the concept. It was satire. But also they didn’t turn around and disparage black folks collectively with that character. They didn’t use it to perpetuate any negative stereotypes that I can recall.

Totally different than a bunch of frat bros using a blackface party as an excuse to make racist jokes.

You recall incorrectly lol. Basically all his lines were stereotypes, as was his delivery. And it was hilarious.

I saw nothing wrong with it btw. I was simply saying it's amusing that no big controversy swirled over it when the movie came out.

But wasn’t the entire point that they constantly had a real black character on hand to satirize the stereotypes? That was what made it funny for me at least. RDJ would say something ridiculous and hilarious then the counterpoint comes in from the other guy with some incredulous look on his face or telling RDJ how stupid he sounded.

I just meant they didn’t try to use it convince people that black folks are thugs or anything like that. Which usually goes hand in hand with black face.

BTW, this movie came out in 1986. Reportedly, no one was offended.
I wouldn't say that. The wikipedia for this movie has a longer segment about the controversy surrounding this movie than the segment describing the plot for it.

They have the black actor chastise him once in a very funny scene. Other than that, they just let it ride.

That was 32 years ago. Sometimes... on rare occasions... things change. It's entirely possible that the context was so exaggerated that, hopefully, most black people were able to laugh at the joke that was being implied. But, I have no doubt that there was a considerable bloc of people who were offended. I like to think, and hope, that satire can always be enjoyed and never taken seriously.

The further we get away from what used to not offend people, the more likely that it's probably evolved to a time where it is considered offensive and therefore not spoken or done so as to be respectful. There was a time when lynching blacks without judge or jury was customary and that activity offended very few (if any) people, depending on the location. It's come a long way.

Blacks should just know their place and we'd all be happier. Why they wanna go and mess things up by being uppity, I just don't get it.

Well to be fair, they didn't know they should be offended. If it came out today, you can rest assured that there would be a whole bunch of people ready to let them know they should be offended.

Unfortunately not in the current climate where everyone strives to be offended.

This thread is kind of a million things at once. For the record, my stance is

Black Panther=Very Good
Tropic Thunder=Very Good

and to tie back in with a reference near the beginning of the thread
