On this day in 1957, Raleigh angler Jimmy Croy, fishing aboard the Mary Z with Capt. K.W. “Bill” Olsen, landed a 143-pound blue marlin. Prize money of a couple hundred dollars was presented to the crew. Eventually what started as an effort to promote charter boat fishing in the area ended up as one of the biggest fishing competitions in the country, the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament.
