Oct. 4, 1970: Dedicated, Greenlaw Hall, UNC-Chapel Hill.
I spent a lot of hours in this building. Never thought it very attractive and it doesn't match the surrounding architecture at all, but it's home to great teachers from whom I learned a lot. Also, I was inside, on my way to class, when I learned of the attacks on 9/11/2001. Students and faculty crowded around a tiny TV in a little teacher's lounge trying to grasp wth was going on.

Oct 4, 1957 October Sky - Sputnik was launched.
Trivia. Homer Hickam Jr wrote the book, Rocket Boys, upon which October Sky is based. The studio thought Rocket Boys was a poor name for the movie so they anagramed it. October Sky is an anagram for the title of Hickam's book and totally appropriate since the movie opens with Homer looking up in the October sky as Sputnik flies overhead.
