A van down by the river
1. Pick 5 states to kick out of the USA and explain why.

2. Pick 5 states to be the only states in the USA and explain why.

States don't need to be contiguous. Also, D.C. is not a state you morans.

Kick Out:

California (should be obvious)
Alaska (It's cold as f***...and they are the reason for Shane Battier)
Texas (they are arrogant, self-centered Cowboys fans...)
Florida (but can we keep Disney World?)
Kansas (just because I'm an asshole)

Keep:

North Carolina
South Carolina
Virginia
Georgia
Hawaii

Common theme here is geographical.

1. Pick 5 states to kick out of the USA and explain why.

California - they're a leech on the rest of the country in terms of federal dollars.
Florida - because every weird and depressing news story comes from there.
Illinois - maybe the rest of the state is cool but Chicago has an inordinate amount of homicides
New Jersey - all the crap of New York without offering any redeeming qualities
Connecticut - that place is just lame

2. Pick 5 states to be the only states in the USA and explain why.
.

Virginia - the history is amazing and it offers various lifestyles (urban, rural, beach, mountains). Plus, need states with ports for military and shipping purposes. But would petition to have the state cut off at Culpepper. Everything north could go.
NC - see VA
SC - best beaches
Montana - God's country
Wyoming - see Montana

Also, D.C. is not a state you morans.

Out
New York, California(no explanation needed)
Illinois(Too dangerous)
Colorado(wind always blows here because Colorado sucks)
New Hampshire(who would miss them anyway)

In
North Carolina (Home state, Tar Heels)
South Carolina (Love me some Myrtle Beach)
Nebraska(Hunting, Beef)
Kansas(Hunting)
Texas(Hunting)

Kick out:

-New Jersey- no further explanation needed. Plus this would close down Duke due to significant drop in enrollment, which is a win.
-Ohio- ugly ass state, weather sucks, sports team suck.
-Kentucky- because UK
-Connecticut- not one redeeming quality
-Maryland- get rid of most federal govt employees and UMD fans.

Kick In
-NC
-Colorado- because mountains, skiing, music scene and legal weed.
-California- most beautiful state in the nation and I love SF
- Florida- I like the Keys, Miami and tons of great golf courses
- Virginia- 2nd most beautiful state in the nation. And I got a lot of friends in Va.

http://247wallst.com/special-report/2012/08/03/states-that-get-the-most-federal-money/

"The states that receive the most money from the federal government each year are, generally, the most populous ones. In 2010, eight of the 10 states with the highest population received the most. California, the most populous state in the country, receives the largest share — more than a third of a trillion dollars. However, when accounting for population and the amount states pay in federal taxes, the breakdown looks very different."

Now, I understand the last sentence - when accounting for population, the breakdown looks very different". But that irrelevant to me. In fact, the more populated an area is, the more I'm probably in favor of it going away.

Out:
Alabama - never been, but the place looks like a dump
Arkansas - see Alabama
California - La La land and SF are good money makers, but the people are bizarre
Connecticut - All the worst qualities of New York and New England with none of the good
Ohio/Michigan - If I could cheat and just take Cleveland and Detroit out and keep the remainder of both states that's what I'd do. Those are the two shittiest cities in the country

In:
Florida - There's a little bit of everything in this state
Nevada - cuz Vegas
New Hampshire - All the best qualities of New England with none of the bad
New York - We'd need to make money in this 5 state union
Texas - Never been, but the place seems really cool

So no NC? WTF is wrong with you?

Texas - Never been, but the place seems really cool

It's not. Or at least, Dallas and Houston are not. I've heard San Antonio and Austin are cool.

I've heard the same, that Austin and San Antonio are the spots to go in Texas.

I like NC, just figured I'd rustle some feathers by excluding it.

And I figured I'd ruffle some feathers by saying "rustle some feathers"

The drive from Nebraska to NC, Kentucky is the prettiest state we travel thru. The eastern part of Colorado is horrible. West of Denver I can handle. The ride along the Colorado river is beautiful.

I've heard the same, that Austin and San Antonio are the spots to go in Texas.

My wife said San Antonio is overrated. She said the whole Alamo thing is a massive disappointment and that the famed riverwalk is not nearly as cool as some people make it out to be. She described it as a creek running through town with strip malls on the banks.

This ignores which states pay the most money to the federal government. When you net the two, California has far more outflow than inflow.

We'll see where California is in 10 years when their water crisis is beyond critical. They won't be producing shit.

Glutton for punishment, huh?
Well before I read the rules of the thread, I was gonna poast that I would build the US to have all the good looking women and me, so I went for the best I could within the confines of the thread. Plus without Cal and NY, there'd be nothing good on TV or at the movies.

Out

South carolina. Hot flat and has south of the border

Both dakotas. Would anyone notice besides dinosaur fossil hunters?

Ky. A national embarrassment

Utah. Enclave of pedophilia and polygamy

In

Nc

New hampshire. We need good fall foliage puzzle pics

Fla. we need a place for old people, bad drivers, and latinos

Tx. Cause well its texas

Calif. we need entertainment

I may have to add an honorable mention to boot West Virginia. Not really sure what they have to offer.
I'd have to keep WV. A few years ago my truck broke down coming back to NE. Coil pack went bad. Stopped at this garage and a guy named EARL(the owner) said he'd change it. He comes back out and says my truck had jumped time, 2 choices, new engine or rebuild. He said his brother would do it for $900. Next morning Earl called and said my truck was fixed. A wire had burned under the coil pack. He said I owed him $100. I gave him $200 and got the hell out of there. There are still some honest people in the world.

But, But, But, But.....damn

Myrtle Beach is one of the few areas of SC that I don't like. Yankee haven.
Well, if the chances of you being there are low that just adds to the positives of Myrtle Beach. Seriously though, that is where my family has taken our summer vacation since I was very young and I had some wild vacations there without the family when I was in college. So, there are some sentimental reasons. The House of Blues there is also my favorite place to see a concert.

OUT (in alphabetical order):

1. Connecticut - @Hark_The_Sound_2010 already nailed this one. It's the worst of the northeast all jammed into one unsightly package.
2. Mississippi - Dragging down the rest of the nation in education, healthcare, poverty, etc.
3. Missouri - Famous for absolutely nothing, unless you're really into meth.
4. Nevada - The only notable thing about Nevada is Las Vegas, and I hate Las Vegas.
5. Oklahoma - Possibly the ugliest, most worthless state in the union and hundreds of miles from anything worth a damn.

IN (in alphabetical order):

1. California - Arguably the most geographically diverse state in the nation with tons of awesome cities big and small.
2. Colorado - One of my favorite states. Tons to do outdoors and in, plus residents that range from cowboys to damn dirty hippies.
3. Hawaii - Unsurpassed natural beauty on a tropical island, duh.
4. North Carolina - From the mountains to the beaches, it offers a little bit of everything. So does Virginia, but I gotta go with my home state here.
5. Wisconsin - My sleeper pick. Wisconsinites are very laid back and come-as-you-are. The state has its own special beauty including lots of forest and wildlife areas plus two Great Lakes. Also, surprisingly good eats especially if you love meats and cheeses.

I get the sentimental thing. But I urge you to try some different vacation spots in SC. Once you do, you'll not go back to Myrtle.
