BYU G/F Kanon Catchings

The article I saw said we have moved on from him.
Some details will have to leak out. But if he’s flying all the way here I got to think numbers were at least exchanged. So then you host him all weekend and then we move on!?! Something doesn’t add up

From what I can piece together something was said as if assumed by either the kid or his circle and Hubert had a concern, that is why you bring them in, to make sure the fit is right. The strong expectation was for this kid to commit on the visit and that didn't happen, knew something was up right then.

Another thing to consider, thou I may not be his strongest advocate, I don't speak for our staff, Stevenson is very much in play for us and that has been clear from the minute he entered the portal. Maybe some at UNC just felt Stevenson was the better fit?

Should Catchings commit, be prepared that we’re getting him for 1 year only… no matter how he performs. He wants to be a focal point and get to the NBA pronto.

Plays junior HS year at his hometown school, then plays for Overtime Elite as senior (which is typically for fast tracking to NBA), then de-commits from Purdue (realizing his minutes/shots wouldn’t be what he wanted), chooses BYU (easier path to immediate minutes/shots with portal overhaul after Pope left), and now leaving there with AJ coming in (again, taking away from him being focal).

His main priority in coming here is for a higher level NBA audition. Should it not matriculate immediately next year, he’ll be on to somewhere else.

His talents are absolutely good enough to play here, and I know some are thinking that with the portal, it’s year to year anyways, and while you’re not wrong, I’m much more interested in bringing in transfers that will give us 2 years at least. One year rentals are fine, so long as winning matters to them most. I have concerns that may be 2nd for him. Gives off some possible Garcia vibes.

All this said, I’d happily eat crow if I ended up being wrong.
It appears you nailed this one !!!

A blind squirrel finds a nut every now and again. Without looking at Georgia’s current roster, guaranteed PT and higher shot volume had to be among deciding factors for his camp. I can imagine thinking… team wins don’t get you to the league.

The overall state college hoops is in unfortunately. Wins typically are a distant 3rd for many in priority. Getting paid and putting up stats seem to drive decision making more now than ever. Sad that scoring 17 a game on a losing team and getting $1.5M (which in no way sets you up for life) is way more attractive than scoring 9-10 a game on a F4 team (and probably still earning $400-$500k). If you’re good enough, the scouts will find you anyways. Not speaking about Catchings specifically… more just a generality.

I went back to your post to give you kudoes not because you shared something i had not heard, shared that I had heard this when I replied to you. But you took it far more seriously than I was willing to and dang it I know better than that, at least I am supposed to. I admit it, I was galvanized to a negative view of Jarin, I admit that, not proud of it either. So anything that filled a need and did not include Jarin, I was for it and your post really started me to re-think things. That was not a blind squirrel finding a nut, it was you strongly looking at somehting I shoulod have treated as more important than I did, I appreciate your doing that!
