Carolina at Virginia game thread——Tuesday 10 January 2023

We also aren't loaded with 5 star talent. We have two 5 stars, Love and Bacot. One of them was hurt and one hasn't played like a 5 star this year so far. We were also out our only other capable big.... I'm not sure what people expected. I was pretty encouraged to see Washington's offense.

The team needs more talented (or better) players to be consistently championship caliber. Our forwards have been pretty sub-par. Nance hasn't been all that impactful at either end. Leaky's a fan favorite but he doesn't bring enough offense to be a super positive player. Puff hasn't shown much and the other guys don't even play, which tells you they probably look even worse in practice.

At guard, we'll hopefully get some reinforcements next year. I don't have a ton of confidence in anyone other than RJ at the moment. Dunn looks pretty overwhelmed on defense, while Seth doesn't have much to offer in halfcourt offense.

Assuming Bacot is back next year, I still think we're a forward away from being a really good team. Hopefully we can get someone in the portal, because I don't see that impact guy on the roster or in recruiting.
Bacot won't be back next year, right? I thought this was his last season of eligibility?

All players that were playing during 2019-2020 got an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA since that season got shut down due to COVID (it's the only reason Leaky is playing this year, it's his 5th; same with Nance). I think Bacot is highly likely to return because he's getting a ton of money/fame at UNC and I don't think there's anywhere else he can replicate that.

Thanks for clarifying that.

We were a couple of bad minutes against Kansas from being National champions last year and we have all but one player back and much more depth (if he would use it) all be it that the one player we are missing was a huge piece we are much better this year than we have shown! Not as good as last year but not play anywhere close to our abilities!
You had to bring up Kansas didn’t you. We pissed away a natty after being up by so much man it still stings

Tony Bennett doesn't need 5* players to win. Bennett has developed a system and he knows how to find the right players for it. He's going to be a formidable presence in the ACC for a long time. He's been formidable almost since he got there. He's won a national title and his teams have been in the top of the ACC since he became their coach.
Pretty much my point

Developing a bench 6 games into the conference schedule, do you not see any issues with that? That's what you do with the first games against directional schools!

He should have been developing this for weeks before now, it's a shame we have to have our best post player go down to see that there is a guy on the bench that can play.

I don't see panic of missing the tournament but there are certainly lots of red flags, for a team that his this much talent.

We make nothing easy, mater of fact we make it as hard as possible by having line ups that make no sense. I'm no coach and have never claimed to be one but it pretty obvious!

Can’t change the past man! I completely agree Hubert should’ve played his bench more in the pre holiday schedule, but I can’t give him a mulligan & replay those games. Gotta start somewhere & better late than never IMO. I was just pointing out there were some positives in a loss that most people were expecting anyway.
