If Hubert wants to play small ball (whatever you want to call it). Shouldn't he have someone on staff who has relevant head coach or assistant coaching experience in college basketball whose system reflects small ball in some capacity? I have no idea what kind of offense Jeff Lebo ran. I'm assuming he didn't run small ball because of the era he was a HC. Sean May doesn't have that experience as a player or coach. Brad Frederick played for UNC and coached under Roy so he has no experience with that.
Pat Sullivan is the only one who has some coaching experience as a recent NBA assistant. But shouldn't there be someone on this staff who has direct ties as a HC with this philosophy?
Am I missing something?
Even if it was a non-nepo hire, wouldn't be beneficial to have? I'll just throw out a name... Bruce Webber, who coached that 2005 Illinois team that played small ball and lost to UNC in the Final. Someone on Scott Drew's staff that won the 2021 title playing 4 guards. How about John Beilein? He made Final Fours with small ball tendencies?
Am I off or is this really strange to not have any relevant experience in the thing you're trying to implement.
And note: Hubert did play a few season under Don Nelson who at times was a very successful small ball HC en route to a HOF NBA head coaching career.
