Do you drive differently when you’re solo?

Amen, brother!

You want to see them in full force, drive 29 at 7:30 in the morning. About the only thing worse is when I get on Wendover off of 29 to get to the office. Talk about idiots!
Yeah, 29 sucks. I'm lucky that I get to take that new piece of 840 that just opened. I love it! It easily saves me 7 - 8 minutes off the commute time.

Since we are talking about traffic, the top ten cities with the worst traffic don't include any city you fools live in. This is why when you guys talk about traffic @TarHeelNation11 and I laugh at you, then cry because we remember we live here.
I don't complain about Greensboro area traffic. It's usually only moderately heavy at worst. But we definitely have a large number of idiots that can't drive worth a shit.

Apt description.

Y'all just don't know. I lived in Cumberland (NW part of Atlanta) a couple years back and dated a girl that lived in Decatur (eastern part of Atlanta). To drive from my apartment to hers, with zero traffic (lol), would take 18-20 minutes. But.... because of how Atlanta traffic flows, y'all I kid you not, I COULD NOT PHYSICALLY GET TO HER IN UNDER 90 MINUTES BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 2 P.M. AND 8 P.M. ON ANY WEEK DAY.

There was no chance. You just know in Atlanta that based on where you are, there are just certain parts of town you literally cannot get to until the sun goes down. It's just not possible. You just don't even attempt it.

Yep and just to make sure travel is always a pain in the ass in Atlanta, God decided that the world's busiest airport should also be in Atlanta.

Ya, that's what pisses me off is when I know how quick it is without traffic. I play men's league hockey on Monday nights, literally right around the corner from where I work. But the game times are 9 and 10pm. So, I go home after work, which takes an hour in traffic. And then make the trip to hockey a couple hours later and it takes under 20 minutes. Making the commute in rush hour takes 3x as long.

meanwhile, in Nebraska...

Well to be fair, the first part of your sentence is the direct cause of the second part of your sentence.

It won't be that way much longer (on the busiest airport thing). Delta's liberal executives want to move out of Atlanta/Georgia.

That's not going to happen. It would be way too expensive to move a fleet of planes. Not only do they have to have somewhere to repair/maintain/store them, but they also have to have enough gates to fly them out of. All that infrastructure is already at ATL. They won't get the same tax breaks either. At the end of the day, it's all about money.

But, even if they were to move, it won't hurt ATL traffic, because they can't move the location of the US. It's in the perfect spot geographically. That's why it's so busy.

You're accounting, right? You can't possibly tell me you can't get a job that isn't in Iowa with an accounting degree.
Be a headhunter for me then bro. I cannot fukking find a job (that justified the amount of money I paid for this degree, rather than a job I could've gotten either without an accounting degree or with a cheap degree from U of Phoenix online or some shit).

What part?
Des Moines.

You know the story about Birmingham and Delta right? The metropolis that is Atlanta (caused by the airport/Delta) could've been Birmingham instead.

Des Moines is not bad at all. Short drive to Omaha as well.

Maybe you're thinking too much too fast? Sometimes the best thing you can do is not worry so much about money and just worry about getting in somewhere. I wasn't getting paid all that much when I first started out. I'm talking good enough for a cookie cutter apartment, a modest car payment and food. Now, I'm making nearly triple of what I was then. Experience is everything.

I'm not really worried about money and never have been. But it's a cost-benefit type thing. I paid.... a lot.... of money for this UNC MAC degree (which I haven't even earned yet btw.... still gotta pass my classes).

As such, I am very hesitant to shift my job search from public accounting firms and larger regional accounting firms to that of looking for smaller firms and just more basic bookkeeping-esque accounting jobs. I could've gotten the latter borderline without a degree. Therefore, taking a job at such would be essentially a waste of my money on this current program and such a job wouldn't have near the same upward mobility as the afforementioned public accounting firms.

All of this is of course moot because I can't find a job, regardless of firm size. So there's that.

Happy fukking Friday.

A lot of things could have happened, but they didn't. And Birmingham wouldn't have become as big as Atlanta, because the geography for flights isn't as good. Atlanta is in the perfect spot for flights. It's just science and stuff.

Oh. Enjoy Iowa.

(kidding)

Seriously though, I hope it works out, and I'm sure it will. There's always a place for accountants. Just gotta find the right fit, and one (that isn't in Iowa) is bound to show up at some point.

Just be glad none of you live in Los Angeles. I spent a week out there working at the home office of a company I was with many moons ago. Like when OJ was in jail waiting to be tried. Anyway, I have NEVER seen traffic or idiots like I saw there. Hands down the single worst in the world. Guys at the home office lovedmliterally like 15-20 miles away and it took them almost 2 hours to get to and from work every single day.

On top of that I was told not to look at anyone in cars around us because I could get shot. They weren’t kidding.

Only place that came close was NYC. I stayed in both long enough to know I never wanted to live in either place

Thank you. Yeah, I'm not REALLY considering Iowa, it's just I know I could get a position with a Big Four firm there... but not this coming fall, it would be next year and I would have to re-apply. A friend I've made through the program lives in Iowa and she said her future firm up there is basically begging for applicants.

Don't be dead-set on large employers. Smaller organizations have a number of advantages, like the opportunity for one-on-one learning that you might not get in the production-line approach that larger firms sometimes fall prey to. The best accounting mentor I ever had was while working for Tacoma Parks and Recreation, even though it was a small shop with less than 10 employees in the accounting department (and even fewer than that actually doing any work, hi-yo!).

Even in a smaller firm, opportunities will find you although they might be with another organization. And like @coolwaterunc said, you'll initially make enough money to live comfortably but modestly. Whatever you do, don't try to evaluate your starting salary based on that of your fellow graduates. In my experience, the greatest opportunity for career and salary growth happened *after* I got out of public accounting (which was nonetheless a excellent experience). I started out making $44k a year when I graduated but my income has seen a steady upward trend ever since.

You tryin' to relocate to Humble, TX with that humble brag???

(I was trying to be @toophly1124 on this reply)
LOL, not at all. I probably left out the important part, which is that I was making $36k when I left my job in Tacoma to go back to grad school. In other words, I only got a modest bump in pay after earning a masters degree. The real momentum came from applying what I learned in grad school, plus subsequent jobs, plus busting my hump to advance my career and my earnings. The value of the graduate degree is that it opens doors for you that you otherwise wouldn't be able to.

That was my experience. Last time through Greensboro, I saw three cases of last second "slam-the brakes and swerves" ahead of me because the drivers were texting or something and nearly rear-ended the car in front of them. In two of the cases, I was actually a little impressed they didn't flip their cars.
