I think he will test the draft to see where he stands. But he will come back for his senior year at Chapel Hill.

I wouldn't be surprised either way due to winning it all, but I'm excited to see what he could do as an even bigger part of the team and hopefully healthy all year. Already one of my all time faves.

Yes he will be back. The way he started the season, I thought he would be gone. However, I think the February slump hurted him.

J.P. Tokoto left and everyone knows he wasn't ready. Joel Berry is 2 times the player he was and JB won a NC. Never doubt a player not leaving

If he does return, he will likely be one of the most decorated Seniors that Carolina has had, maybe ever?....I mean he was the Final 4 MOP this year, and was the ACC Tourney MVP as a Sophomore, so he's got the Credentials for sure...Not to mention, his toughness, grit and determination is what next year's team will need the most....Plus, he's a stud in my book whether the NBA executives believe it or not....I hope he returns, but he's made his mark at Carolina for sure especially after his performance on two bad ankles in the finals!

If Marcus Paige with his size and shot-making ability can't make it out of the D-League, I can't expect much more from JBII.
I think Berry is a great college player but the NBA game is going to test him physically beyond his ability. I just can't see him being able to guard the 6-3 or 6-4 guards that will back him down with regularity. His jump shot has a low release point and he won't be able to finish in the lane like he does in college.
I think he should come back to continue to evolve his game and then make a few million bucks in Europe.

This ^^^^^^

Tokoto was one of the biggest ? we've had in a while. Kid was delusional about his ability and he and his family believed that's Roy was holding him back. My dog has a better jump shot than JP. It was painful to watch but he could jump out of the gym.

I suspect the pros will want to see him have a healthy year.

He should be on the short list for several awards.

If money isn't a problem, he could stay just to enjoy his final year at Carolina.

It's clear he will play for pay in his future. Not so clear that will be in the NBA.

If I'm a scout, in addition to wanting to see him stay healthy I'm looking for him to...

--Get his 3pt shooting above 40%.
--Get his assist:turnover ratio more respectable, and with higher assist numbers.
--Continue to improve on D.

Bottom line, I think he returns. Unless maybe Tony leaves and we don't add Knox or a good grad.

I imagine he'll be back. If he were to get a 1st round draft grade, I would highly encourage him to leave. However it's looking like he'll get a 2nd round grade, or even an undrafted grade, which should indicate a return.
Everything I've seen has him projected as a late second round at best, with most having him undrafted. Given the talent at guard this year, it's hard for me to see him moving up a lot. If his ultimate goal is to be drafted in the first round, then he will be back. If he is satisfied with his jersey in the rafters then he might leave. I think Berry want's to be a first round pick, so he will be back if that is a goal of his in my opinion.

along with enjoying his senior year, there is also some value in finishing his education. i don't hear much in today's world about education having intrinsic value, it's only about money. as a unc alumnus and former college professor i believe in education as a great thing for the individual and for society. at unc, there has been so much attention paid to AFAM that our excellence and high ranking as a university is forgotten. i hope berry finishes school and lives his life as an educated man.

I think he'll be back because of the good points people made here, including:
1) next year's PGs coming out will likely be less competitive / loaded than this year's
2) JB has a chance for a full healthy year, where he can show more of what he can do.... end of this year was not reflective of what he can really do. Including Berry being the absolute leader and focal point of this team, with Meeks and Justin gone. Not saying he'll need to take 30 shots a game, but the offense will sure flow mostly through him, jump shooting, driving, or passing.

One other note: One very reliable guy on this board mentioned that Berry and Knox are sort of a package deal. If Berry goes, we likely don't get Knox. If we don't get Knox, does that impact whether Berry stays or goes?

I think he will be back. But when the announcement comes it'll be a happy day! Love him as a player. Senior Joel will be FUN to watch next year!

Things seem to be very quiet in the Berry camp. I read a post on another site from a guy who supposedly has good info , that said Berry is 95% gone. It does seem he is unlikely to be drafted , so maybe he is thinking overseas pro career. I just don't know on this one.

What the hell is the point of leaving if you're going to be undrafted? Makes no damn sense.

Dude needs to come back and dominate like he can. Was hurt way too bad down stretch.

he was also projected higher than jb iirc.

do you place any value in the staff using playing time with jb to knox in the recruiting pitch?

Do we know that they did? I have to assume that Roy has had a pretty good idea what Berry is going to do.

He might want to just start his professional career, regardless of if it is going to be in the NBA. Can't really fault him for that, although I'd personally take my senior year at UNC over a year in Europe or the D-League.

i read something a month ago after their visit that basically said "coach williams told me i could slide right into jj's spot if he leaves and play with jb and theo."

of course that leads to other questions, but that's not really a leading statement with such high value info.

Because he can finally get paid for playing basketball. That is his goal, period. I truly believe he came back to give it another shot to with the national championship. He and the others did just that. He suffered a lot of injuries in the tournament. Injuries like that are almost guarantees that the kid is gone the next year if at all possible. Marshall left as a sophomore after he injured his wrist. They get one body to earn their living.

I say Berry is gone.

Marshall was also a top 15 pick and had no hope of raising his draft stock! Berry will probably go unfrafted this year. If he were to come back he could raise his draft stock and the draft next year won't be near as strong for pg's! Why not come back for one more year, get your degree, raise your draft stock, and have another shot at a championship! That's a no brainer for me, but you never know what goes through these kids minds!
