By the way @Raising Heel , how did you book/pay for the flights? Several credit cards offer trip delay and/or baggage delay compensation - which looks like you'd qualify for both.

Booked through a travel agency (which is a whole other story). We did purchase travel insurance and are working on filing a claim with them. Only bad news is that means you have homework when you get back from vacation, lulz.
