I've got strong Southern roots, but I grew up in the 'burbs so I'd like to think I can understand people who talk funny or have different (read: yankee) accents, but Lord have mercy on this guy. Some backstory info: one of our biggest customers is a company up in Carlstadt, New Jersey. They act as the middleman liaison between us and the big companies like AT&T that our products are ultimately sold to.

It's exactly what you're thinking. This company is a bunch of New Jerseyites and New Yorkers who are rude as hell, and unorganized as shit, but they offset their ineptitude by bullying us, the little guy, to clean up their messes. But, they give us a lot of business, so we have to just suck it up and deal.

Anyway, they have a new project manager up there and he's called me a few times this week with various questions on a project we're working on for them. I kid you not, this dude talks so fast that it makes my head spin. The speed of which he talks, combined with his Jersey accent, I literally can't make sense of anything he says. I can understand Hispanics who speak less than 100 words of English that work here better than I can understand this guy. By the time I make sense of something he's said or told me to do, he's 10 friggin sentences down the road in his spiel to me. Of course, I counter him by talking reaaaal extra slow and throwing a bit of twang at him lol.

Anyone else experience a problem like this? Or are any of y'all fast talkers? Thinking back, I've always had trouble understanding fast talkers. I mumble fiercely when I talk, but at least I talk slow.

I will meet you on Peachtree and Peachtree and we will settle this!!!111!!!!

Now, now, no censorship. We can talk about anything here.

Even THN's pathetic problems.
I don't know enough about boats to zing you with a boating-themed insult, but if I did, I'd put one here.

I feel you. And you can probably expect this problem to get worse as you get older. For me, it's not just fast talkers, it's a lot of different types. People with accents, forget about it. I don't even try anymore. I've gotten to the point that if I call about some problem with a bill or my cell phone or something and I get some middle easterner on the phone, I just straight up say, "look fella, I don't mean to be rude, but I have a real hard time understanding people with accents so I'm gonna need to speak to someone that doesn't."

Fast talkers are annoying too. I just have to ask people to repeat themselves a lot. And I always do it with this WTF look on my face to ensure they know I think they're the weird one and it's not on me.

That's my career in a nutshell. Doctors!!!! I have to type up the reports from listening to them give medical details on their patients while they mumble, whisper, talk 200 mph, eat, chew on straws, pencils and toothpicks, use the restroom, stand in the middle of a crowd of laughing hyenas, and more. Now you know why I'm crazy!!!

Please note that I didn't say the movie sucked. I said it was a 6.5 out of 10 and that it entertained me. I simply don't see it as some "must see" classic that I'd want to watch again and again.

I also think the Godfather is a better sleep-aid than Ambien, so don't treat my opinions as Roger friggin Ebert-esque lol.

You should probably just keep your movie opinions to yourself.

Back to the OP (we got off topic, the horror!), we have a VP at work who is not only one of the smartest guys I know but a fast talker as well. He talks as he thinks and it's hard enough to keep up with, but the stuff he's talking about is complex strategic stuff to boot. There have been times where I literally just stopped listening and thinking about what I was going to have for lunch instead.

J-Mikes?

I'm going to blow some minds with this one. I have never seen pulp fiction.

Never seen it and after watching that "great scene" shared above, I can say I will never watch it. Unless certain conditions were in play, I can think of no reason to watch a movie glorifying violent punks!
Is that a fair summary of the movie?

Would you say the Godfather glorifies violent punks? Goodfellas? The Dirty Dozen? Dirty Harry? Sure, out of context and if you've never seen the movie, that scene isn't great. And I should have warned anyone that hadn't seen it before, that there would be foul language and violence. Then again, I assumed that anyone who would watch the clip I linked would either have seen the movie before, or have an idea what the movie entailed in terms of content, but that's my fault for assuming that. It is definitely a movie that features its fair share of violence, no two ways around it, but I wouldn't say that it glorifies the violent characters, just like I wouldn't say that the Godfather glorifies Michael Corleone. It's a movie that has a story that focuses on criminals and a life of crime. It has flashy dialogue and a dark sense of humor, but that is not equal with endorsing the characters or their actions. If you choose to never watch the movie, that's fine, it's no big deal, but don't let the fact I posted one out of context scene be the reason why.

I more get the sense that @tarheelinfl would oppose to most movies with intense criminal violence due to religious and moral beliefs. I don't think him viewing that scene you posted is directly the cause of why he wouldn't like the movie.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

That very well could be, and @tarheelinfl, I wasn't trying to call you out in any way, nor did I take it personal that you referenced my post, and I apologize if it came off that way. That was never my intention. I didn't think he had a specific problem with me, I just would hate it if the only frame of reference he had at all for this movie was a scene that I happened to post, and based on that, decide against the movie forever. With that said, as I posted before, I have no problem if you choose not to see this movie. He's obviously gone this long without it, and without any negative impact on his life, so that's fine. I can understand people having moral objections to the subject matter. I've met many people who I love and respect who have differences of opinions with me on certain movies and television shows, especially when it comes to subject matter. While I am a lover of film and television, I also believe that those things shouldn't be your moral compass. I do not endorse the actions of Tony Soprano or Walter White, but I believe those to be two of the best, most interesting and compelling characters ever put on television. However, if you are a person who does not want to watch things that do not align with your moral/religious beliefs, that's more than fair. I often say in situations like this "that's why there is more than one channel on TV." :D
