Game thread...... Louisville

Thought Roy was going to be able to snag one more banner this year. His health looks to be just getting worse and worse. First it was the dizzy spells and now he needs a couple knee replacements possibly? Dang, I feel for Coach! Hope the boys can pull their heads out of their asses and win one more for him this year! He deserves it!

Well - I'll be a ray of hope here. Like someone said... we had it coming. We have to come out on Sat against a team that I am sure is better than Louisville, in an arena that will be jacked up, and play like we are behind 10 points in a tourney game. That kind of intensity.

Plus - in the upcoming week - I wonder if there is something we can do to get shooters' confidence back. It seems like nobody is playing naturally, on instinct out there. No confidence in what we are running, who should be shooting, when. It sucks, because this team has more ability than most.... I just have no idea how they lost it and how to get it back.
THAT'S a "ray of hope?" lol

3-17 from 3 , 34% overall . 16 turnovers finally caught up to us when we played respectable competition. Time to straighten this funk out but it is got to be soon.

he called some this game, so I hope the "Roy never calls TO's" contingent is satisfied
He normally doesn't. He does during tourney time. And yes it drives me crazy he normally doesn't call them. And I also know he doesn't for teaching moments.

Hate to say it but this team had it coming. Maybe now they will play with a chip on their shoulder and a little more urgency.
This team doing that for a game - possible. Consistently enough to win the championship? Unlikely.

Louisville at home 2 days after their worst-ever loss? I knew it was likely going to be an L for us.

WOWWWWWW! WOWWWWWWW! Berry with a wide open 3 but misses and then 4 missed tips?! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA GOOD JOB GUYS!
I just think this team is an elite sharp shooter away from being unbeatable. Paige can shoot lights out. But just don't have that second deadly 3 point shooter. That's way if I was a coach playing against us. I would play a lot more zone. And keep the bigs we have from controlling the game.

sounds about right
Nope, it's 9 games to go now.
I don't think The Heels drop 4 more games. 3 maybe, likely 2 (wish one or none)
So I'm thinking they finish 6-3 or 7-2 in this final stretch.
6-3 would mean 25-6 heading into conference tourney and that's not a bad clip.

Hope our boys aren't as big a quitters as our fans.
Tonight's not a good night to pose that question although I really haven't seen any remarks all that negative. No need for the fan police tonight just move along nothing to see here.

I suppose it's all in how you take a loss.
Some people vent online. Others might go for a run, or hit the punching bag, or kick the cat (everyone needs a cat to kick)
If I didn't have to go to work soon I'd just pour a scotch, open a bag of chips and forget about it.

Mike, Nobody is a quitter just tired of watching a soft team that can't man up against good competition on the road. It's the same song and dance. A poor shooting team, can't stop dribble penetration if their life depended on it and they fold like a cheap suit when the going gets tough on the road. How many times should Roy Williams have to coach effort? I will say that Roy Willams is playing way too many players.

Not overly worried. But if we don't shooting better from the outside. We will start seeing a lot more zone. Which is not good for a team that likes to play inside-out on offense. Paige will come out of his slump. But we need Berry,Jackson, someone needs to also become more consistent shooting the 3 ball also to help out Paige.

Shot poorly but the boys never quit trying.
this team lacks confidence they look lost on offense unless they can get run outs. 30% fg,shooting 4 out of last 5 games is troubling no need to act like it was just one bad shooting game. Don't thank anyone has given up. but the trend is not good.

Officials were horrendous. That call was obviously wrong and the TV guy and Doris Burke said absolutely nothing!! Marcus was at least 2 steps in with both feet before catching that pass. Refs had us afraid to play defense.
Officiating had nothing to do with this game. That is just an excuse. They played better and out hustled us plain an simple. And they shot better

I'm not worried about Berry, either. With his mental attitude and heart and toughness, I doubt he'll even have a couple bad shooting nights in a row. The zone did put us in a funk, as I suspect that once guys weren't hitting from the outside, they were thinking about, and passing up, some good open shots, vs. just letting it fly.

I didn't see Jackson's 3s but as someone said, recently his shots seem too flat. I assume all these guys can shoot 50%+ from 3 with nobody guarding them in practice (I bet its closer to 60-70%).... so I don't get why we've gotten to where we can't even shoot 20% in games..... I know there is a defense out there, but at least half of the 3s we take are wide open, not much different than shooting them non-guarded.... except for that overthinking it part.

Meh, we were underdogs for a reason. We're shooting terribly and got completely out-hustled tonight. We've been ripe for a loss for a couple weeks. If we lose again this weekend, I'll start to get a bit anxious.

I rarely call out Roy and I know he coaches for the whole season, but I saw a key moment with around 6min left in the first. Heels were up by 6 and looking dangerous when Pitino went to his front court bench players. Roy countered with the fearsome duo of.....

James and Maye....... momentum lost.

As I said, I'm not the coach, I'm not there on the sidelines, but it seemed a strange frontline to go with.

BTW. I like both James and Maye, just not on the court at the same time.

We do not need LM to be on the court in any close game, at any point. He's a huge liability. Don't get me wrong, I love his determination and the potential he has, but he should not be playing unless we're up 10+ points.

that is a valid point and head scratcher.

Fellas, it's a road loss to a good team that we should have won if we played well..Marcus needs to get back to being aggressive and JJ too, but Berry and Hicks have grown up and were 8-1..I think we need to get Brice the ball on the block more and defensive rebound

I think just like last game. When I questioned the weird lineup against VT. It was because of foul trouble. Bigs had two each. I did t agree with it then when we gave away a huge lead because of it. But can't disagree with Roy's move this game. The games flow never really changed and it remained close and sloppy on both sides.

I agree. Great point. I wonder who were the guards on the floor at that time. Regardless, with those two guys on the court at the same time, there is almost no risk of interior guys looking to score.

Unless both are in foul trouble, I think you have to have Hicks or Brice or both on the court for all 40 minutes, or at least all of the 40 minutes where we aren't way ahead.

With Paige and Jackson (and for tonight, Berry?) struggling from beyond the arc, it'd be nice for Britt to be able to step up and hit some threes. He was 1-2 tonight, and has been able to carry us from 3 in some games earlier this year. I like his chances on open, in rhythm 3's. Much more than Pinson shooting them

I thought Paige's defense was terrible. He was blown by numerous times. Yeah, Hicks played fairly well I guess. He was 2-8 though. Brice and Jackson actually played pretty well. I was just pissed, haha.

I agree Marcus didn't look good at the start but he had a few key blocks and steals/strips when we needed them. Thing is usually that part of his game is more consistent, regardless of his offensive woes but even now we are just getting it in flashes. Brice was okay but went into hero mode a few times, he was frustrated and he's that type of emotional player. I don't mind his emotion at all though, truth be told we could use a little more fire.

Like we folded at FSU & at Syracuse? We ain't gonna win 'em all & we aren't going to shoot this poorly forever either. Tough road game in the ACC, let's move on. Not gonna be surprised if we lose Saturday either, but also not gonna be surprised if we figure this thing out by the end of the year & enter the tournament looking like we did against Maryland.

I wonder "what kind of senior leader" Marcus turns out to be. I think he can lead with his play, and I believe somehow he will get his shot back, when he stops overthinking it, and gets a breakout game..... but I also hope he calls out other guys - and takes a good look in the mirror - regarding where guys including him aren't bringing the effort on defense, rebounding, etc. to get it done.

Just like with Texas, we got pretty much owned on the boards tonight. Way too many second chance shots / points for Lou. For a team to be great, you need great players who play great when it matters, but you also need guys who will take it upon themselves to hold people (including themselves) accountable, when the effort isn't cutting it. I just don't see that being Brice. I don't see it being anybody but Paige (and he seems sometimes to quiet and nice to do it). Maybe even Berry as a soph can do it. Our team needs it.

Seems Marcus should say "WE'VE worked too hard - many of us over 3-4 years, year around, to piss away what is right in front of us - and to squander the goals that are right there for the taking".

Not saying officiating is why we lost. No excuses here just discussion. You can't say officiating had nothing to do with this game when Brice, Meeks and hicks were all sitting on the bench in the first half with 2 fouls apiece while Maye and James were in the game together. That's a big impact on the game.

We have lost 3 true road games to likely tourney teams. The loses aren't alarming. But the fact the guys can't hit the broad side of a barn shooting.... Cough , cough Marcus. Doesn't bode well because it's going on long enough it makes me think it's mental. Jackson just needs to stop taking 3's. He can't make them enough. Same for Pinson. Berry and Paige are the only ones who should be taking a volume number of 3's. We are never winning a meaningful game this season where Marcus and Joel shoot 4-23 FG and 2-11 3's in a game.

In general, I'm not worried because of the loss last night. I pegged it as a loss before the season started. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't starting to get concerned about Marcus. His confidence is gone. He's hanging his head now and you can see his slump is really effecting his decision making. He's still playing great defense and he's doing some other things well. But his shooting is gone right now. Hopefully he finds the mark soon.

I think we'll play much better against ND and come away with a win.
