Harrison Ingram Commits To UNC

Ugh. As long as we don't start the season ranked #1.
I know what you're saying , but we'd almost have to be, wouldn't we?

What other teams would be in the running? I know, hard to tell yet, with more moves to be made. But we'd have to be one of the odds-on favorites, I'd think.

OTOH, what journalist is going to have the balls to rank us #1 again, so soon?

Cadeau is a generational talent who sees the floor through a flux capacitor powered time lapse lens and X-ray vision. If he reclassifies we become a team diametrically opposed to last season in IQ, work rate and attitude.
So if he came to the HILL this upcoming season, and has to compete with RJ for that spot, and Trimble's defense is going to get him PT also, we would be waisting what might be his only season with the way the portal works.

I have no idea what this current team can do with the addition of these solid players, but I am good with riding RJ at point one more year!

Not even as backup PG?

Obviously backing up at point might be what keeps Seth waiting in the wings another year instead of entering the portal. And it won't surprise me at all if Seth starts to turn the corner this season with enough PT.

But . . . is giving those minutes to Seth going to be smarter than letting RJ back up when Cadeau gets a rest and bringing in Wojcik or Wilcher at SG? We don't know how good Wilcher will be, but maybe really good with that extra PT. And we have every reason to expect Wojcik to be quite solid for us.

Thanks for keeping me from being the only one who feels that way.

Here's a benefit from being in our club. If Cadeau comes anyway, we're still OK. But I feel sorry for some of our brethren if Cadeau decides not to reclassify. Some are pretty sure we'll suck without Cadeau. Whereas I see a sweet team either way, and possibly a little tighter without Cadeau.

Now . . . where's that "Fast Forward to November button"?

3.2 APG 1.9 turnovers per game - those are his career numbers. He’s not a point guard and anyone who offers him as fine just simply doesn’t know Jack shit about basketball.
That guy fits the picture you just painted. 🎨🖌️

Guys, I cannot overstate how important Elliot Cadeau would be to the team now that we have more pieces in place. I love RJ but I think we would love him even more at the two. Cadeau is a guy who sees the floor the second has hands touch the ball. We're all clamoring for that Carolina fast break and Cadeau is a kid who will pass the ball ahead as opposed to 3 years of dribbling. It will encourage the rest of the guys to run hard to fill lanes because they know he will get them the ball if they do so.
Imagine having a floor general, who by the way, Is a decent rebounder and shooter for a point guard, who can find all of our new shooters. He can break his man down off the dribble and he can feed our All-American Center who should be playing with much more room in the middle. It warms my heart just to think of it!!!!!

I really don't think there is any way we're not in contention for a natty if he comes.

The PG is, and always will be, the key.

Anybody have access to some of the data on his catch and shoot percentages? The publicly available overall shooting percentages are worrisome - he was every bit as inefficient as Caleb Love last year. But his role on this team offensively will be different - he should get opportunities created for him rather than have to create his own as often. Would be curious to know what his catch and shoot numbers look like.

I would be ok with it but Cadeau is an absolute and undeniable difference maker who simultaneously makes the entire team AND RJ better.

If he comes and there is anything more than cursory "competition" for that spot, welp... (at the risk of sounding overly dramatic) Hubert, it was nice knowing you.

We got to the title game without a traditional point guard and a really spread floor so I don't think you absolutely need a traditional PG in today's game. I think you need 5 guys to be a threat on offense to be truly dangerous offensively. RJ's got some skill. I think Ryan's ability to play without the ball will help a lot. Ingram is talented and will help just by being a huge offensive upgrade over Leaky. Withers looks like a better fit. And Bacot attracts attention.

So I don't know if it's absolutely necessary. People comparing RJ's first 3 years is a tad unfair IMO because his first three years he was playing in the same backcourt as Caleb Love, who while he was at UNC, was a very inefficient player. He also played a lot with Leaky, who was an offensive zero. So no wonder he's going to look like an inadequate floor general. I don't know if RJ is a good PG or not. I doubt he's a good PG. But, if the idea is being positionless and skilled 1-4 with Bacot... Then this group has a lot of that.

Don't know if RJ can handle it. Don't know if it's wise to give him the keys to the kingdom. Don't know how good Cadeau is. I try to stay away from message board hype around freshmen. My point here is I think it's unfair on RJ to criticize his PG play when you share a backcourt with what we got out of Caleb Love for 3 years and Leaky. It looks like we have a lot more skill coming in.

And I always say. Skill tends to figure it out.

(btw, RJ is also an elite rebounding guard)

That was a one-time (albeit brilliantly) schemed deal that everyone in college basketball has since scouted and thwarted (witness: the entire past season).

Not to tit-for-tat because I happen to agree with you, but, we got to the title game without having five guys be an offensive threats as well.

I love RJ. Behind Baycot, he is my favorite player in this group. An absolute warrior who gives it every night out and, as you mentioned, is an elite rebounder for a guy his size. I think he is going to thrive if Cadeau comes. My comments were not meant as an indictment on RJ. Just the recognition of an absolute generational talent in Cadeau.

I'm with you on being skeptical about what others say so I've watched a ton of his film. If you check out a couple of clips, I think you'll see the difference right away. Either way, we're good if he waits till 2024, but I think we're great if he comes early.

So how much better do you think we would’ve been this past season if we had Kendall Marshall instead of RJ?

Fair enough. Nothing against anyone opinion of Cadeau. I just need to see him do it in college before declaring anything.

And I think dudes are going to run hard next year regardless. I truly think Caleb Love drained a lot of energy from the team. And we had a few players who could only impact the game when they had the ball. I think Ryan, Wojcik, and Withers are different kind of guys. They’ll probably bring their own energy.

Those 3 probably aren’t as talented as what we lost but I think they’ll play harder and sharper.

Maybe Cadeau would make that even more contagious. But I do think we’ll see some organic addition by subtraction next year.

So how much better do you think we would’ve been this past season if we had Kendall Marshall instead of RJ?
RJ was the best shooter on the team (even with that dislocated finger.) The question should be about Butter instead of Love. How much better would the team have been with Kendall setting everyone up for easy shot opportunities, instead of Caleb using 40% of our possessions on himself?

Correct. The entire ACC scouted and made necessary adjustments to defend us. We made little to no changes hoping it would somehow keep working.

Joel Berry 3.1 APG 1.5 Turnovers per game. Career numbers.

You sound like you don't know what you are talking about.

Theo Pinson led the Tar Heels in assists per game (with a better A/To ratio too)during our 2017 championship season.

Darn good take, very doubtful I could make a better case for RJ being our PG but I simply just can not agree with any argument that says RJ should ever play one more second as our UNC PG. I have so far 3years of proof on my side, what ya got to counter that?
I’m legit curious, what specifically don’t you like about RJ at the one? You mentioned 3 years of proof, but I’m not sure what you’re referring to. I can see him playing the 2, but I guess I’ve never thought of him as a bad 1.

He isn't bad, but most unc fans fall in love with assists. The problem is, your assists can't be great if people don't make shots or don't take in rhythm shots. Take Leaky out and put in a knockdown shooter and RJ at least has another 2 apg easy.

He is basically the exact mold of Joel Berry with a little less handles but a better ability to create.

Disagree. Kendall feasted on the easy up the court passes for assists that don't happen with this team because they play too many minutes and Bacot doesn't run like our old traditional unc bigs.

I would argue Kendall wouldn't have been drafted at all if he had to play with this team because his numbers wouldn't have been there due to the players surrounding him.

Love was an off the dribble shooter and didn't really like the catch and shoot 3. Leaky was too hesitant whether wide open or not. And the rest of the roster couldn't reliably hit 3s. Taking RJ off for Marshall likely would have been a bona-fide disaster actually because our scoring would have plummeted immensely. They would have even moreso stacked the passing lanes because Marshall kept you honest but wasn't much of a shooter though.

And I say this with the caveat that I loved Marshall and think he might have been the best pure passer in NBA history, despite his career. He was putting up assists like it was candy, but he can't make them for them. I'd argue he woulda had 17 assists per game (I know how ridiculous this sounds) if he played for a good NBA roster. I used to watch the Lakers squander so many of his passes over and over.

I don’t know about that. If Marshall is passing it more to Love, Black, Nance than RJ did then I think it would’ve been a disaster.

I guess an argument can be made that Marshall helped Bullock, Henson, Zeller all become first round picks. But he was passing it to much more talented players.

Can’t believe a thread about Ingram’s commitment has durned into a discussion on how Butter would have fit into last years team! Just waiting for a spreadsheet with hypothetical minutes distribution!

But I’ll play with my thoughts:
Kendall replacing RJ would have improved the team by x%.
Kendal replacing Love with RJ playing the “2” would have improved the team by x% to the power of 10.

After watching more of Ingram, I love that he is a point forward who can bring the ball up after a defensive rebound. I also love the versatitly and basketball IQ HD has added in the portal overall.

Our shooting woes partially came from lazy set up passing this year in my opinion. RJ doesn't set up shooters well and neither did Love. We had a team of lazy passers that never set up the open shooter to shoot in rythm. Cadeau would help fix this aswell as our transition game.

I think the ultimate success of this team will be spending time playing with each other this off-season. If the new people wait till close to start of practice to show up and gel, then it will be another long, shaky start. I really believe that was a major factor last year. The team as a whole looked flat. Chemistry is just as important as individual stats and positions. Success =5 alphas playing in unison

I've watched every game for the past 40 years. Excuse me if my opinion differs from yours. Maybe explain where i went wrong so we can have a conversation.

He kicked out to wide open shooters a lot. They just didn't generally make them.

I knew we were a bad shooting team, but the Miami game was icing on the cake and just had me shaking my head. 5-31 from 3. John Stockton coudn't even have even fixed our shooting woes. If you watched every game, you would have seen wide open after wide open looks being bricked. You would have also noticed all the wide open looks due to teams packing it in on Bacot.
