I know this isn't going to be well received by you vegans out there *cough @gteeitup cough* but I want to take a moment and talk about hot dogs for a moment because they're freaking delicious and deserve a thread. Anyway, I just got done making hot dogs with Varsity chili and it was an orgasmic experience. It's been ages since I had chili from The Varsity, so I figured I'd head online and order some. Basically, I'd like to fill a bath tub with this stuff and just lay there for an entire day, eating gallons of chili off of my body.

Anyway, enough of about disturbing images of coolwaterunc laying naked in chili, let's talk about hot dogs. The perfect hot dog consists of Bright Leaf hot dogs (I had to settle for Jesse Jones because Charlotte) with the southern classic, mustard, chili and onions. I like slaw on my dog too every now and then, but it's all about the classic combo. I'll go with beef hot dogs (Nathan's), but nothing beats the southern red hot dog. It's the perfect unhealthy comfort food.

I have no idea why I'm poasting this. I'm gonna go try to get through my food coma. You all have a nice evening.

If you're ever in Burlington, do yourself a favor and go have a Zack's dog or three...

This post gets a like for mentioning bright leaf hot dogs. No other hot dog comes close to it. I like mine cooked on the grill with a slight hint of char on it.

Nathan's dog on a potato bun w mustard, slaw and onion is bangin. A lil Pete on there too. Man. I could eat hotdogs 2-3 times a week.

Fun fact. My primary care doc said no human should eat more than TWO hotdogs a YEAR. He says they're that bad.
I don't like to advocate violence, but it sounds like your doctor should be shot in the face.

This changes nothing for me. I've seen almost all common meat products made from beginning to end. And when I say beginning I also mean the animal's living conditions. This wouldn't come close to the worst thing that you could see.

Duuuude. Gimmie about 20-30 of those w a bottle of mustard and I'm set. Top 3 snack of all time.
If I remember, I'll bring a mess of them to the tailgate at the Cal game. I'll have to make them the day before, but I'll store them in Tupperware. They keep.

I probably gain 8 pounds every football Saturday because my tailgate spread usually consists of hot dogs, donuts, fritos, barbecue, and of course, beer

My man! I'll buy the jumbo bottle of mustard to make sure there's enough for everybody. (I can't cook). That spread is everything I want in a tailgate though.

Always best if cooked on the grill.

I'm more annoyed that you spelled "hot dogs" using one word instead of two.
Amen, he obviously isn't a hot dog aficionado.

I *do* eat them 2-3 times a week because I'm lazy, can't cook, and I enjoy hot dogs.

I like the Johnsonville kind that are infused with cheese.

For tailgating, I like doing pigs-in-a-blanket with the little smokies.
I eat them at least once a week. I like them with mustard, slaw, chili, onions, and jalapenos. I also like to toast the bun. Love the Johnsonvilles.

What type do you get? Do you get the Better with Chedda or whatever? Or the smoked sausage kind? The grocery store usually rotates what's available so it's fun for me to mix it up every time I go (yes, I need more excitement in my life lol)

Can't get bright leaf out here but they are by far the best. Closest thing we have is the Fairberry hot dog. It's really not bad....official hot dog of the Huskers.

And when I was in High School Paul's Place was the bomb.

Is Bright Leaf the red kind? I've only had the red kind a handful of times since I didn't grow up in NC. I've been in the state a bunch throughout my life, but hot dogs aren't exactly something you eat on a vacation or family gathering like Easter.

Two things I really miss about not being in NC is Wilber's BBQ and bright leaf. Any time I go back that's basically all I eat the whole time.

Yes, not only are they the red kind, they are THE red kind. There are imitators, but none of them stand up to Bright Leaf. Some of them do just fine, but if you want a real southern hot dog, you go Bright Leaf when you can get them.

GMAFB, the "red kind." That's just insulting to try to lump them in with other hot dogs just because they are red. That's like comparing a McDonald's cheeseburger to a filet mignon just because they are made out of meat.

Pretty amusing/cool(?) that several of us OOTB regulars are from (or families are from) a ~50-sq mile area of contiguous counties

- @heelz2345 and @grillheel and @nctransplant from Wayne County
- @tarheel0910 from Johnston County (correct me if I'm wrong)
- my dad's family is originally from Richmond County but has lived in Sampson County for 40+ years
- heelz, grill, JuleZ, and I all have family in Duplin County

#connections

(ETA: I wouldn't give out personal info like that but all of y'all have poasted at some point on this board or on Tar Heel Blitz where you're from, so I felt okay doing it)

ETA: added transplant and Julez

Relax hombre. I was just making sure I knew what y'all were talking about. I've had them before. They're good.

Speaking of Clinton, there's a local butcher shop there that makes its own spicy sausage (bratwurst style) that is the best thing I've ever tasted. I pick up pounds and pounds of it whenever I get up there. I'll have to find out the name of the place

Have some Duplin County connections as well, though not very close any more. My grandmother was from Rose Hill; used to go to family reunions at my great-grandmother's incredible old house in Rose Hill with a huge front yard full of 100+ pecan trees. The house was originally built before indoor plumbing and despite having 6-7 bedrooms it just had one small afterthought of a bathroom that was added on later. Porch wrapped around three sides. Several ancient outbuildings/sheds full of old junk that was like a gold mine for kids - also popular with wasps, we learned. Unfortunately I don't think the property stayed in the family after she passed.
