Hubert offers 3-star shooter

Fair question.

All I can think is that HD is willing to spend a scholarship on someone who might be a sharpshooter off the bench. He decided that Nickel wasn't that guy, so he's gone. But Dunlap might be that guy.

If you are only betting 1 scholarship a year on finding a diamond in the rough, that's not so bad.
Where are you getting that he ran Nickel off? Been discussed on multiple sites about him wanting to be closer to his girlfriend.

Have to trust Hubert's decision on this, but these last few portal commitments (other than MAYBE Withers) make me wonder about the state he is trying to bring this program to.

Someone else already said what I would ask.. If Nickel (THE ALL-TIME LEADING SCORER IN VA HISTORY) didn't work, how are these guys going to work? Regardless of the "girlfriend" status, Nickel wasnt that good in the minutes he got..

To me, we may be gaining "shooters" but on paper, isn't these guys ranked lower than who we lost? Why are we not pulling in top portal players?

Better hope Cadeau reclasses and we can somehow get Ingram...

You're just wrong. Self doesn't want him. That's already been explained. Most of the coaches who recruited him at one point don't want him. They found better players in the portal. Dunlap pointed that out a month ago in an interview. Right now his only committable offers are Kyle Neptune's rebuilding program, and Rick Pitino's empty roster at St John's.

And don't you dare compare this to Roy and Luke Maye. First off, Roy's intent was to have Luke walk-on as a freshman so the scholarship could go to an actual contributor (Brandon Ingram.) Second, Roy actually played his bench players so they wouldn't transfer and would be ready to contribute. Third, as a sophomore in high school Luke dominated a senior McDonald's All American named Kennedy Meeks in the playoffs.

Dunlap is just going to sit at the end of the bench with Wojcik and High. Hubert won't play him bc he's years away from being able to defend ACC players. If he commits, the only question is whether he'll transfer before or after Zayden High does.

Timberlake was Hubert's top portal target. You can play make believe if it makes you feel better. But the staff's presentation made it clear he was their top target. They were so sure he was going to commit, and then crickets, followed by him setting visits to KU and UConn.
I’m trying to figure out who these hard to defend acc players are. Lol it’s not like the acc was a juggernaut this past year. Do kids not improve or even have a chance to do so. Can’t all be starters. If he doesn’t play or develop then that’s on coach.
I hate that puff and Tyler left but we have to have somebody.

So why throw away a scholarship on a guy who will never play, if you truly believe good options are going to open up in the portal?

Why not hold that scholarship for one of these great prospects you're convinced will suddenly appear and want to play at UNC?
I already explained both of these.

1. Clearly Hubert doesn't think he will "never play". The logic makes sense for having 1-2 program guys at any given time.
2. I literally laid out my projected depth chart for you. This scholarship doesn't impact landing the top guys.

Where are you getting that Timberlake was Hubert's "top target"? That would be big if true, but I've seen no indication of that. He certainly wouldn't be my top target.

The portal is extremely fluid. The early entries were just a sniff of what the final group would/will be. Pretty silly to lock into a top guy, even before you know all the options.

Maybe I'm reading too much into their comments, but AJ and Sisk seemed pretty pleased with Withers. Sure there are some question marks because he's coming from Louisville, but they addressed those concerns in ways that made me feel good about Withers. Barring significant developments, I expect him to start at the 4.

If Withers starts as our stretch 4, we're in trouble. His best season was playing Center as a freshman. The bigger his role got playing on the perimeter, the more mind-blowing turnovers he committed. He was Louisville's king of dribbling off his own leg last season.

Now if he accepts his limitations and focuses on the two things he does well, jump shooting and defensive rebounding, he could be a very good 6th man candidate. A guy who comes in to play against tired starters and bench players, camps out on the perimeter, and makes opposing defenses pay for double teaming Bacot or collapsing on RJ's drives.

This is a guy who couldn't even average double figures on the worst Louisville team of my lifetime bc his coach had to keep sitting him due to fouls and turnovers. We don't want him starting, trying to create off the dribble, trying to carry a heavy scoring load, trying to be the guy who shuts down the best PF on the opposing team.

We need to put Withers in a position to succeed to by asking him to only do the two things he does well. If we can't get a better PF on the roster, and we force Withers to start, we're doing him and this team a disservice. The angry Twitter Heels will make him their new scapegoat when he has 4 first half turnovers dribbling off his leg while trying to attack a midmajor PF off the dribble.

From the same source I get all my behind the scenes intel from. He was their top choice to step into Caleb's spot, they went after him as hard as any elite high school recruit they have recruited, they were positive he was going to commit within days of leaving Chapel Hill, and the news he is likely going to UConn hit them like a ton of bricks.

Jeff Lebo literally told Nickel, Puff, Mckoy, Styles, and Shaver don't expect more minutes next season. This was done to run them off and open up scholarships.

Driving from VT to his girlfriends university VCU is 218 miles (approximately 3.5 hours.) Driving from UNC to his girlfriend's university is 163 miles (approximately 2.5 hours.) The moment he committed to VT everyone knew the girlfriend stuff wasn't a factor.

Interesting if true. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me though, I would've been upset if he was an opening day starter for us. I think he'd be great as a 6th man, but understand if that's not enough for him.

In your previous post you worried about Withers starting. I'd be shocked if we're intending for him to start. Again, please wait a month before panicking. We are going to add more good guys or I'll be right there with you on the ledge.

None of them deserve more minutes honestly. I'd love having Nickel stick around and developing for 1-2 more years; he wasn't interested in that though. So we need to find someone who has long-term potential to take our 13th scholarship. If Dunlap will take two years of <5 minutes a game and Nickel won't, then the moves make plenty of sense.

Have heard otherwise on 1st paragraph.

Also heard of the GF transferring to VT or close by leading him to transfer.

Unless his girlfriend is going back to Western virginia, then Tyler is going to be further away from her in Blacksburg than he ever was in chapel Hill. If she stays in richmond, he's going to be further away then he was in chapel hill. Supposedly she's pregnant, so I don't know if she's going to continue with classes at VCU or not. But, I don't think I buy that he was transferring to be closer to her. That might be a factor on some level, but I don't think if he was going to be a starter at UNC that he would still be ready to transfer. Davis didn't seem to want to play him and develop him, for whatever reason. And we're going to find out how good he is when he goes to play at Virginia tech.

There he is! My last comment on the matter suggested that she is rumored to transferring closer to him as he wanted to be close to her while still playing for a bigger school, not VCU etc. Wish the best for him regardless.

Davis just sent the number one all-time scoring high school basketball player in the history of the state of Virginia off of his team. I wish him well, too. Feeling he's going to do very well. He could have been doing well in Carolina blue. Davis recruited him, so it was his guy.

Well if that’s fact, then we better do better with whomever we pick up, or the whole lot of the coaches need to hit the road.

Dunlaps top five schools are Nebraska, North Carolina, Penn State, St. John's, and Villanova.

Conversation with player A:

Hubert: "You know you're not going to play very much, certainly for the next couple of years. But I see you being a key contributor as an upperclassman."

Player A: "That's fine coach. I just want to be here in Chapel Hill. I also have a very realistic approach to the kind of player I am and what I can offer. I'm happy to get in where I fit in."

Hubert: "Great kid, we'd love to have you."

Conversation with Player B:

Hubert: "You know you're not going to play very much, certainly for the next couple of years. But I see you being a key contributor as an upperclassman."

Player B: "Nope. No way. I'm too good to sit on the bench. Upperclassman? What?!! I was hoping to be on my second NBA contract by then."

Hubert: "This may not be the right place for you."
Too much logical thought in this post….

Are you saying that Hubert did not attend these player meetings or that he sat there quiet while Lebo did all the talking?

His girlfriend is a high school senior who will be on an athletic scholarship at VCU starting this fall.

But you go ahead spreading your rumor that a girl who isn't even in college yet is going to transfer to a different college.

Your reading comprehension sucks, I pity him or her having to deal with you.
But go ahead and set up the meeting.
My reading comprehension is fine. Your inability to understand how and when to use quotation marks is embarrassing.

Lol. Regular students can transfer/decommit just like athletes, Dave. Carry on attempting to pick fights with every poster that shares different intel than your boy. Being close to his mom was also a factor as she's right down the road at JMU.

Assuming we don't pick up an obvious starting PF from the portal, who do you guys see at the 4? Washington?

Plenty can change but from this vantage, if Withers isn't good enough to start or at least play starter minutes, that's when we'll be in trouble.

Man, you know how to run a site, good for you! I'll check with your guy next time, no problem. Regular students can hit the portal or decommit just like athletes, Dave. Carry on attempting to pick fights with every poster that shares different intel than your boy.
It's not "intel" when it's a fabricated lie, like the one you keep trying to spread about a high school girl.

We don't have anyone on the roster capable of starting at PF for a good ACC team. We also don't have anyone on the roster capable of starting at SF for a good ACC team.

That's why there is no much uneasiness over this scholarship being wasted on Dunlap. We have very real needs for our starting lineup for the coming season, and Hubert is wasting time on a kid who will sit the bench until he transfers out.

Withers fits our starting power forward need, read David Sisk's interview with the Louisville beat writer, I believe it is a free article. I think that may have you feel less concern now for our 4 spot. I think we are done at the 4, looking for a wing now and Mdbako is being considered a great fit there but I still prefer Ingram.

Lol. You do you, Dave. I'm sure Andrew appreciates another mod for the forum.
I'm not moderating anything. I'm just pointing out how shameful it is for you to spread lies about high school girls in a sad attempt to pretend like you have "intel."

You run around trying to tell people you have intel about a girl transferring from one college to another college to be close to Tyler Nickel. When it's revealed she's still in high school (a fact you clearly didn't know) you desperately try to spin it to somehow fit the lie you've been telling. "Well errr you know regular students can transfer errrr decommit just like athletes." She's not a regular student, she's going to be on an athletic scholarship when she starts at VCU in a few months. That's literally why she's going to VCU. Holy crap man, how big of a hole are you going to dig trying to spin this lie?

3 and half by the shortest route. A full hour longer than the drive from Chapel Hill to VCU. Which is one of the reasons why the "Nickel transferred to be closer to his girlfriend" rumor was put to bed a while ago.

Nickel transferred because he was told not to expect an increase in minutes next season. Hubert and Lebo ran him off to open up a scholarship.

Yet we still have this guy trying to spin lies about Nickel's girlfriend in a sad attempt to get people to believe he has "intel."

I’d believe his lies over good intel from an insufferable prick like yourself. You’re so awful, I’d welcome Grover back with open arms if it meant you’d go away.

I’m starting to doubt you have any friend on the staff. No way a guy like you has friends.

If we don't pick up anyone else, then Withers would start. But I think it's almost certain we'll pick up someone else to start instead. I think Withers will get 15-20 minutes a game primarily as a backup 4, but he also has the versatility to play the three 3 or 5 for a few minutes.

That's why I'm pretty happy with him as a bench piece. Versatile shooter with size and sufficient athletic ability, two years remaining, and can serve as an emergency center if injury strikes (he played center mostly as a freshman in his best season, and is about the same size as Manek). Removes our need to add another post player in case of Washington injuries, while being more useful than a backup center would've been. I don't think we'll be thrilled if he's starting every game though.

But again, we're looking to add at least 2-3 more transfers. Just be patient; he's unlikely to start.
