See, that's exactly what I'm talking about. Fun and totally random.

Go to Chuckie-Cheese's on a Saturday. Cheap and best trip you'll ever take -- you'll leave there and tell you're future wife, "Buy yourself a dog, I ain't shittin ya...no kids"

Sanibel island. Incredible. Its the shell capital of the world. Before u poo poo that let me say it is really the freaking shell capital of the world. Because of currents and the islands locale and yadda yadda the beaches are literally knee deep in places in incredible whole shells of all varieties. The island is isolated and only accessible by a toll bridge. No chain restaurants or traffic lights or neon signs. A drive thru bird sanctuary/nature park with incredible views. We saw otters, gators, and bald eagles. A restaurant called the bubble room on the northern end thats a huge old house with a dozen diff dining rooms and eight layer cakes. And its the only place in the US where u can see the sun rise and set over the ocean if u go to the north end. Jungle like Vegetation grows right up to the beach. 25 mi of bike trails

Oh and a chesseburger place called "cheeburger cheeburger" that sells only chesseburgers chips and pepsis.

If I could spend a week anywhere that would not cost me a fortune, give me plenty of privacy and quiet, I know I'm gonna like the people around me, the weather will be great, I'll have access to awesome food, I can fish, smoke cigars, ride a bike, play golf or just lay around ... Bald Head Island. I've been to Bermuda, the Caribbean, West coast beaches and many more ... the East beach at BHI is still my favorite spot to "fall off the map."

Go there often. The inlet has filled with sand so u can walk to bald head from ft fisher beach now. Totally deserted on that stretch. Incredinly beautiful wetlands and estuaries.

I worked there (golf course) for 2 summers while in college, easily the best summers of my life.

Ever been to Ocracoke? Quite a bit cheaper.

Friend of mine just got a job working for the city there. Has to take the ferry back and forth but he loves it
Yeah that's what I did most days, unless I met someone who was there on vacation and shacked up with them. My parents live on Oak Island then so it was easy to get home. HUGE tips to be made out there back then. Bill Cowher was always there, Woody Harrelson, Alan Thicke, Oprah's guy and many others. I would go home every evening with a wad of cash in my pocket.

several times and I'd still take BHI for privacy, lack of cars/noise/traffic, no snow birds, etc ... and since I love to play golf, it's nice being (literally) a golf cart drive from a world class course.

Yeah, if golf is a must, Ocracoke is not for you.

So here's my entry into the contest: Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas.

Established in 1972, Buffalo National River flows freely for 135 miles and is one of the few remaining undammed rivers in the lower 48 states. You can paddle the entire length of the river while surrounded by massive bluffs as you cruise through the Ozark Mountains.

My kayaks can't handle the Class II and III rapids in the upper part of the river, but I could still do a 4-5 day trip on the middle and lower sections. There are several designated campsites along the river, but you're also allowed to camp on any of the sand bars along the way. The weather should be perfect at the time I'm looking to go.

Couldn't find a short video that does it justice, but here's a sample:

Chattanooga is pretty awesome. Plenty of outdoor stuff and all sorts of awesome places to eat and drink. The downtown area is awesome and there is an area across the river with a bunch of cool little shops if you are into the millennial experience. We try and go at least once a year. We pretty much stick to the eating and drinking.

Why not wait til June and go to the CWS?
I definitely want to hit the CWS at some point. You have to start planning early, though, and that's more of a bro trip than a solo gig.

Would you be interested in going? Anybody else here? UNC is a contender to make the CWS almost every season.

I used to live in a suburb of Omaha called Bellevue and across the river in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Just wanted to get that on the record.

Chattanooga is a very underrated city. When I lived in Knoxville I dated a girl whose family was from Chattanooga. We made a couple trips down there that I thoroughly enjoyed. Went to a concert downtown at a joint I can't remember the name of. I like that it's not a long drive from Charlotte, plus I could do some outdoors stuff nearby.

I'm going to let OOTB decide where I'm going on my next vacation.

So, I've been mulling this idea around in my head for the last week or so. I have to make sure there are some checks and balances so that some ludicrous option doesn't win out. Ultimately, I reserve the right to not be bound by the results, but if you guys play nice this could be fun and I'll defer to the board's decision.

Here's the background. I'm going to take at least a week of vacation, probably sometime in late April/early May when students are still in class. I'm willing to go anywhere in the continental U.S., i.e. the lower 48 states. Many of you know I like camping, backpacking, and have two touring kayaks that are capable of navigating coastal waters, lakes, and slow moving rivers (class I rapids). I also like exploring new cities. My trip to Canada last summer was awesome because I was primitive camping on a lake one night and in a hotel in downtown Halifax the next. That said, I'm also open to (most) new experiences.

Here are the ground rules for you, the voters. You are welcome to submit as many vacation suggestions as you'd like. The more detail, the better. It can be somewhere you've been before, somewhere you'd like to know more about, whatever. I'll leave the nominations open indefinitely until I feel like you guys have run out of ideas. I am also allowed to submit suggestions. Once I close the nominations, I will pick up to 10 of my favorites. This will allow me to weed out any smart ass ideas because **** you, I'm not spending a week in the Bates Motel.

I will then create a poll with the top 10 picks, and each of you will have the option to vote for up to 3 of them. Of course random poasters will be able to vote, too, since this isn't a premium board. You can change your votes at any time but the poll will close after 10 days. Whichever option receives the most votes will determine my next vacation. If there is a tie, I will create a new poll as the tiebreaker.

I'm probably forgetting something, so I reserve the right to amend the above as necessary. Otherwise, let it rip.

======================

Edit: Keeping a running tab of viable suggestions in the OP.

- Bald Head Island (North Carolina)
- Buffalo National River (Arkansas)
- Bourbon Trail (Kentucky)
- Catalina Island / Charter Islands (California)
- Chattanooga (Tennessee)
- Glacier National Park (Montana)
- Lake Powell houseboat (Utah)
- Ocracoke Island (North Carolina)
- Olympic National Park/Seattle (Washington)
- Sanibel Island (Florida)
- Washington, D.C.
I would vote for Glacier National Park but your timing isn't ideal for it. The Going to the Sun Highway through the Park will likely still be blocked with snow so you'd mostly be limited to one side unless you want a very long drive around the south side.

It's an awesome place though. I've been six times. Drove there three of the times. It's like a scaled down version of the Alps.

Another option is Acadia National Park. It has plenty of hiking and biking opportunities, you could take the kayaks if you drive, and Bar Harbor is a neat town to hang out in.

We went last October and enjoyed it a lot.

Captiva Island is better, IMHO. You drive across Sanibel to get to it. Have spent much time on both islands.

I was in Acadia NP and Bahh Hahhbahh, briefly, back in 1994. You're exactly right that it checks a lot of boxes. Also visited Portland and loved it, so that could be rolled into the trip as well. Good call, I'll add it to the list.

Are you expressing sincere interest or just being a comedian? It's within driving distance, and with enough people to defray the cost it becomes a pretty affordable trip.
If you were going to pay then I'm 100% sincere. Baseball is my favorite sport, so naturally I've always wanted to go to the CWS.
