Possibly. You don’t miss the dance two years in a row at UNC, especially in your third year which next season would be. Missing the tournament in year one would have been much more understandable than in year three....will there be a new coach 14 months from now? If so, who might it be?

Agreed, but I wonder if the portal could impact things. One reason Doherty got fired was because there was going to be a lot of transfers. With it being easier to transfer and players not getting enough time, is that a possibility? I don't think it would be as bad as Doherty, but who knows in today's world.Doubt it. Hubert would have to go full Doherty between now and the end of next season, record-wise.
The fact that he was hired in the first place shows how stubborn tptb (Roy + Alumni) are. They will want to wait until it is beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is not fit for this job, no matter how disgruntled the fanbase is. I don't think we can realistically get there until, at the very least, one or two season after the 2024 class gets acclimated
Given the 2028 contract extension, the amount of goodwill he bought with the lucky tourney run, and his general likeability, I think he gets at least 5 years. Especially if he stays more or less at this middling level he has us at now.
My hope is once the 2020 class is fully gone and he's still at this same level, we can, at the very least, start having this conversation without his blind supporters getting their panties in a wad.
Define failure? I think it bought him time to be mediocre, but if we start regularly missing the tournament, then he won't last that long. Going to be interesting to see what happens in year three. That's going to be when we know a lot more about how good/bad he is.March 2022 guaranteed HD at least 5 years of failure before his job is jeopardy.
That's what I meant... 2-3 years of just spinning wheels- 2 steps forward, three steps back- kinda stuff.I think it bought him time to be mediocre,
'Full Doherty"? Doherty inherited a mess. A total mess. Guthridge had royally screwed recruiting, which meant that starting in his 2nd season, Doherty would have very little talent unless he recruited gangbusters before coaching his first game. Perhaps worse than that was that Guthridge had ignored team discipline. Doherrty inherited a team in which bad attitudes were starting to grow. Forte may have had the worst attitude, but he was not the only hard case.Doubt it. Hubert would have to go full Doherty between now and the end of next season, record-wise.

possible but not likely IMO. Transfer market is a two-way street. For every guy that goes out, there's likely another one willing to take his place. UNC can attract top talent with relative ease and Hubert is seemingly unreluctant to use it.Agreed, but I wonder if the portal could impact things. I mainly meant in terms of W-L; it was my understanding that guys inside and outside the locker room were not happy with him by the end of his tenure.'Full Doherty"? Doherty inherited a mess. Making all of that much worse is that Dean Smith publicly snapped at Doherty just before school started that Doherty had not been his choice. That allowed all those who had wanted somebody else to run wild, knowing that Dean would not back Doherty. Boosters and players alike took notice.
It seems that Dean most resented the fact that Doherty brought his entire staff from ND rather than taking Guthridge's assistants. Doherty had made clear in this interview that he felt responsibility for his assistants and would bring all of them. AD Dick Baddour had agreed to that, but evidently Dean Smith did not and made certain people knew.
what an irrelevant post ...will there be a new coach 14 months from now? If so, who might it be?
