James Okonkwo Reportedly Will Visit North Carolina

Reading up on him, he seems like a solid prospect and still very young. Been in college two years and he is 19. Late to basketball as he was a tennis player growing up. Huggins seemed to think he could develop into something special. Hopefully we land him!

He's not a grad transfer, but Okonkwo might be worth a look. I know nothing about him beyond his stats, but he's a 6'8 240 rising junior with good rebounding and 2pt shooting in limited minutes. I'm thinking he might be happy with a backup role in his first year here. Even if that's all he becomes, we can always use someone like that. OTOH, he might not be any better than Shaver, so who knows?
I'm glad to see this. Do we actually have an offer out to him or is he just visiting?

If we are actually offering a spot to guys like this, does that mean Hubert isn't confident in Washington or High for this season?

It means that we have a few available scholarships. No need to turn this into some sort of negative occasion. But then, do what you do...

I don't think a transfer would visit without an offer?

I still think (may just be hope) that we end up with a wing transfer. That and a big like Okonkwu would be great. May say something about Washington. At the least, he has a lot of injury concerns and didn't prove much last year, so having more depth is understandable.

Filling in backup positions does NOT necessarily say anything about the current roster! It says we have a coach that is smart enough to know we need peeps in case of injury, foul trouble, unmotivated play AND we have to have bodies in practice and to develop for the future! Grabbing a player like this would be ideal, especially since he has the potential to be very good at some point! Bacot needs some breaks and he needs a body to bang against! Wherever Washington is in his development, we don't want him to be the one who constantly bangs with Bacot in the post yet!

Okonkwo's only other visit (Texas A&M) just used their last scholly. Horse ain't in the barn but he's sure galloping thisaway.

I don't know why we have more than seven people on our roster when HD refuses to play them
Hubert was going like 9 players deep during his first season. But then Garcia quit, Ant was ruled ineligible, and Walton just refused to play defense.

Last season we had 3 players come off the bench that averaged 10 minutes per game (Puff, Dunn, and Trimble.) But overall our bench players were terrible and playing them just put us in deep holes.

Texas A&M, not Tech. (Are you PlacerCountyHeel on IC, bc that account made the same mistake.)

And according to A&M fans, they were already over the scholarship limit and are in the process of pushing players out.

I am (there was already someone too similar to my name here who asked me to change) and apologies for my error, it's been fixed.

Wasn't the kid they just signed at A&M also a PF?

My parents lived in Grass Valley, beautiful country out yonder.

Dave you hit the problem right on the head. The many couch coaches refused to understand all of those factors..

Led WVU in blocked shots despite playing only 11 minutes a game. Has a great deal of upside.

This season he'll battle Washington for backup center minutes.

Did he make it to Chapel Hill yesterday?

I've been nervous UK might come calling since their only 2 big men are out with injuries.

This kid just might turn out to be special! He has some dog in him and his instincts are already really good! Once he tightens his handle, develops a few counter post moves and generally smooths out some, he could be All ACC level in 2 years!

I hope we see enough of all our bigs this season to know if any will be legit, ACC-caliber starters for us the following year.

If Ingram sticks around and works out at PF, we'll have 6 front court guys. But how many will be good enough to start for a contending UNC team?

Ingram
Withers
Washington
Okonkwo
High
Brown

Can we please start the season already. I'm tired of waiting.

I've cued this one to a nifty play. Okonkwo is the guy in white at center court to begin the play.

1st move is a travel and has been for 100 plus years lol. It is not being called at an alarming rate in travel tournaments.
I like his high motor and physical toughness as the backup 5.
If he starts at any time at Carolina then he will have taken his game to a level I frankly don't think he can reach. Or Carolina is back to being mediocre. He is a 2-3 year bench piece that I am very happy to have!

I like konkwo, looks really springy, pogo stick like and really strong motor, I think we got more in him that we realize. What is confusing is why his offensive game has not matured any more than it has because he seems to have the tools needed. I realize he was slow coming to the sport but I would have thought he would have more in his offensive bag by now.

1 aspect I would like to see in him, I want to know if he is or can become a second leaper as a defender, especially back to the basket. I see the ability for him to there, just don't know if he has been taught the value of being the second leaper as a defender? FYI, by second leaper I am referring to on defense not leaving your feet to attempt to block a shot until the offensive player has left his feet so you are not biting on pump fakes.

He looks energetic and can run/dribble some. Could back up Mando or back up at #4.

Only thing is, he won't be able to wear that number at UNC!
