Why in the heck can we not play perimeter defense? I just don't get it. Even since Dean E Smith (God rest his soul) have we never played it worth a poot. Dean's take was let them shoot it it's a high percentage shot. Well it's not anymore nor has it been so for a while now. These guys can knock it down like a free throw almost. Any ideas on why we can't seem to get that accomplished. We run into a great 3 point shooting team and we are toast.

I would much rather give up an decent look at a 3 (low % shot) and lock down the paint than to lock down the 3 point line and give up layups

We help defend to much at times and opposing coaches know it, off penatration we tend to collaspe in and try to funnel the driver in to long defenders or to a defender set to pick up the charge call, ya saw Berry do that a couple times last night. Some of our guys are losing the passing lane back out to the spot up shooter by helping to far out, rotations off the ball are at times a little slow. One of the issues I had with Nate last season was he was really easy to be taken off the dribble and that forced help defense, ya leave a guy to help defend the guy you had is now open if there is not solid rotation and there wasn't last season to often. he so far has been much better this season, it is never going to be his strength but better is really big news in my opinion.

Last night Wofford hit some good shots, they caught squared and fired quickly, kinda what Wofford does because they are so small inside. They had pretty much 3pgs on the floor vs our 2, and that makes it hard for our 2 guard who is a wing or our wing who is 6'7" to match the quickness that keep the man in front and not driving by. Defense is forced to help and wham bam there is a spotted up jump shooter some where looking for the catch & shoot and he is usually on the opposite side and Wofford found him consistently.

There were VERY FEW times last night that Wofford had wide open looks. Most of their looks did indeed come from over helping, but even then the defender recovered and the shot was contested.

In todays basketball, you can't give up decent 3 point shots and have to limit decent 3 point attempts.

Lets say a team shoots 34% from 3. Not great. That's still the equal of shooting 51% from 2's. Also, I don't have the numbers but I'm sure you're much more likely to give up offensive rebounds on 3's vs 2's.

The limiting attempts is important in defense. Its a bit outrageous but if you allow lets say 40 attempts from 3 in one game. If you allow 30%, it becomes less relevant because you're allowing 36 points still on 2's and that's not factoring second chance points.

Compare that to if you only allow 10 3's a game, and your opponent makes 4. That's terrible 3 pt percentage D but you're probably not goong to lose games because of those 12 pts.

This is a problem with our offense IMO. Just not enough volume and efficient perimeter shooters even when Paige is back. Going to be hard to overcome that.

Don't know why anyone would be offended, so they gave up open threes to a very good shooting team, that happens. Id be more concerned if it ends up a trend over several games
.
After the first two games there was some angst about free throws, against Woff the Heels went 68%.... not the magic 75% which should be standard, but still an improvement.

The eye test says we can't. The numbers say we play it pretty well. Last year, as with every year, this was a complaint but IIRC our numbers were pretty good. Teams are going to shoot a lot against us. We remember the ones that go in. That isn't to say it doesn't frustrate me either.

True with our fast pace there are going to be more possessions plus as big as we are who wants to try and push there luck in the paint.

Our weakness at defending behind the line seems magnified by how poorly we shoot from there. That was one thing I loved about the 09 team - Lawson Green and Ellington could all consistently hit 3's. When you can match the other team's spurts of hitting the deep ball it does not appear as if you are closing control of a game you should win easily

I believe this year Britt, Berry, Jackson, and Paige all shoot it well enough for us to be very proficient from 3; which is to say I don't see many other teams glaringly outscoring us there, unless the other team jacks up an obscene number of them.

I don't think we lost games in second halves last year because opponents shot a high shooting percentage on an overload of threes. I think we could look back and see that we had few guys (with Pinson out, Paige not 100% physically, and JP not 100% bought in mentally), that just couldn't defend on the perimeter or on drives to the hoop.

Even when we look back to the '05 and '09 title teams, and all the way back to the '93 teams, we had a great blend / balance of inside / outside:
Donald Williams / Montross - Lynch
McCants - Felton / Sean May - Marvin Williams
Ellington - Lawson - Green / Psycho T - Deon Thompson - Ed Davis

Take away or even slightly diminish the contributions the bigs I have listed, and there's no way we have any of the last three titles.

I strongly believe this team has plenty of outside shooting, to fulfill that need in the inside / outside balance. I think its if Meeks and Brice both get in foul trouble (or something worse happens that I won't mention, that begins with I) .... that's what's more worrisome

I think you're being unfair to the shooters. UNC is hitting 36% (16-44) from the 3 this season and that's including Justin's 0-9 and the 4 end-of-game shots put up by Spenser Dalton, Kanler Coker and Toby Ebunga.

So if Justin hit just 3-9 and the walk-ons not thrown up any late game prayers it'd be 19-40.... and that'd be pretty good.

36% with no Marcus is still pretty good.

Oh yeah, and wouldn't it be cool if Nate can maintain 75% from out there!!!!!!
