Kris Wilkes...

OK, for all you harping on Bigs. This was my post on premi, applies here as well.

This may not set well with some but it's fact.

These top rated kids have to be "THE MAN" when you are recruiting them. If you start looking elsewhere they get upset and may even scratch you off their list. We lost a good recruit to IU that we should have gotten for this very reason. Roy knows what he is doing, we just have to patient and see who he brings into the fold.

Mikey you are right to an extent, if we are talking offer out to a 5 star kid and then we go out an offer yet another 5 star kid at the same position then yeah, the first one can feel as if he has been "cheated on". But that is a VERY different thing when we are talking about wanting offers to get out to some 4 stars, they are not the kind of players that make a 5 star feel "cheated on".

IN addition, yeah these 5 star big men want a lot of PT but not many of them want 40mins a game every game and that is what ya have if you do not have back up big men on your bench. I mean what do you do, sit back and dither away time praying for that 5 star to say yes and risk he says yes to some other suitor or hedge your bet by getting a solid 4 star or 2 and even if that 5star does go elsewhere you are not left out in the cold stranded with zero depth and having to start a walk on?

Noah Vonleh, yeah, he wanted to be loved more so he went to IU that showed him love, didn't show him much more than that, Truth be told, that kid had a way inflated view of his own game, he left college to soon and what did he accomplish at that school that loved him more? I wanted him but truth is there seems to have been some "coach ability" issues there and we really don't need those kind of kids.

2017 ....................... good thread on him on premi. :)

By good thread do you mean as in he has a offer but it is a secret? Cause right now that is kinda my definition of a good thread, either a big man commits or at least we get an offer out to a few.

So how is it UK and dook offer all the top kids? PJ has TX listed as warmer and 5 schools as warm. We are not one of the 5.

And YES David, offering 4 stars for the same position bothers these 5 Star Super Stars.

How is that even possible when hes only listed UNC, Kentucky, Texas and Arizona as definite official visits?

My initial response to those type kids mike, would be, if you want pt come on down, if not get out of the way. But recruiting doesn't work that way. Fortunately, there are still some good kids out there, that are good students and would make great representatives of the University.

Let's see what shakes out this fall, beginning say after August 22.

Ky and duke can offer a list of top kids because they have a list of talents that leave each year, that revolving door lets em out and in. Some times when you have the one & done program a kid that was thought to be one & done isn't or decides to wait. One kid decides to stay when it was not expected and another committed thinking a kid would be one & done that isn't and all the sudden you have more than was expected.

Duke for example filled vacant holes with the 2016 class but Allen staying was not exactly expected nor was jefferson being back for this season. Couple years ago, Willie Cauley stayed longer than was expected and Towns & Lyles came in, the Harrison twins stayed longer than expected.

And, reality moment, Ky and duke are in vogue for these top talents right now, it is for now a badge of honor just to be offered by either of them because they feel like only the best of the best get offers from those schools and if they get one it is a mark of how good they are. We have not been seen in that light for a while now, that is just the cycle we are in.

So I would ask Mikey, if a 5 star is bothered so much by an offer going out to a lesser talented kid at his position, if a 5 star is concerned about an offer out to a 4star, then it begs the question of do we really need such a fragile ego representing us? if you need everything gift wrapped for you then maybe we are all better off with that 5star going elsewhere.

If you are a 5star player it means you are one of the very best talents at your position in the country and as such you should trust in your ability to come in and compete no matter who is on a roster or who else commits from your class. The best are suppose to want to compete against the best and not just have everything handed to them on a silver platter.

Funny how so many of these kids dream about the NBA but get scared when they may have to fight a lesser talent in practice for PT? I would rather we had a 4 star that is willing to battle for playing time than a 5 star that feels the plate has to be set for him perfectly so he can stroll in to anything he wants without much effort. Cobey While just committed to us, he didn't care who we had offers out to and he didn't care who we would have on our roster when he gets here, he wants to compete and he knows he can only get better by being challenged and having to work to over come those challenges. That is what a competitor does, that is what a player does, maybe that isn't what a few primia donnas want to do, then go elsewhere.

Love kids with Colby's attitude. Wish they all took that stand but they don't. All 5* Bigs now days THINK they are 1 and done. They want guaranteed PT, we both know Roy don't play that game. Oh how I long for the days they could go straight out of high school.

One of the main reasons I want offers out to some 4 star big men so we can get in hand guys that want to play for UNC and want to be coached by Roy. If the 5 star big man is not buying what Roy is selling there are only 2 solutions. Either Roy changes what he sells or he moves on to guys that do want what Roy sells.

We should agree, all 5stars are not the same, to many are of course. I am all for Roy taking his shot at the best of the best but if that particular kid is not looking to buy something Roy does not sell then time to talk to another prospect.

I may be way off base but in my opinion I believe its not really the kids these days, its their "support group" ie handlers, "parent", aau coach. My point even more expressed, the attitude of the nation we live in, ENTITLEMENT. Sorry i'll get down off my box now, I needed to vent.

Think that 4 star Big Offer/Commit is just around the corner. :D

Well I wonder who that 4 star big may be Mikey, should I ask Sherlock Holmes if his side kick has any clues? LOL

I mean we all know a certain 4star big man is about to visit and I think we can all expect an offer to be extended and rather shortly there after accepted, great, now if we can get one more I can relax back and not see so much pressure to get front court guys in, can enjoy waiting to see what wings and 5 stars decide to do. I would love to see Huffman for example, decide to take a visit in a similar manner.

Mikey, reading between your lines, you seem to be suggesting that Roy has more offers out but has asked they remain secret as to not bring concern to other big men we are after. I can understand that to an extent but I would like to see us more listed with some of these 4 star kids and they may not tell they have an offer but they will say nice things about us and give us some hope. I don't see a lot of that frankly and I really really want to.

Could this be the replacements for PJ and Bamba? PJ is a bit of a undersized 4, Wilkes to me is similar as an undersized 4. Watson is a broad shouldered college ready body kid that can do good work inside. I like Huffman a lot, nice length and as well a college ready body. These 2 are like bruise brother bookends that would nicely compliment Wilkes being more of a throw back small forward. I can get my mind wrapped around a front court of Tony, Watson, Huffman, and Wilkes.

It may not look as good on paper as a class of Bamba/Carter/PJ/Knox but it is a class that may offer greater returns than those 4 over time. By the way on Huffman, don't worry about his star rating, kid can play and I think would work really well in our system, has nice bounce and good shoulders, I see him able to carry 245-250lbs really well and could be a beast at that weight. Watson is a bit Hicks like IMO, also has really nice broad shoulders that allow him to carve out room and does not seem to mind playing thru contact. He already carries 250lbs well!

The Wilkes offer and OV reveals some interesting moves by Roy. I get the feeling that he's not going to wait around for kids who don't really want to come to UNC. Hence the Wilkes and Watson interest.

Keep your eyes and ears open. Roy is doing work behind the scenes.

Also chew on this.

I'm not comparing Watson to Sean May but May wasn't 6'11. While having a 6'10+ big is ideal, it's not mandatory to compete for ships. Just putting that out there.

At the same time we have to be careful. These kids have egos, if they feel like they're not being prioritized they won't come. Roy's gotta get a PF/C to come here in a BIG way.

Mandatory no but it sure as heck makes it easier!

I like that he is taking the visits with his grandfather. Doesn't seem to be any "handlers" involved.

The Indy star is hoping... ;) huh, sk?

Yeah, David, Huffman is intriguing as he already is the same size as Isaiah at 6'9" 230lbs. I'll take a frosh that size.
And as you alluded to, the kids coming in are skilled but more importantly want to be coached, and improve and become better on and off the court and want to be at UNC.
Go get 'em Roy.

I'll never understand that angle either. Maybe, and that's a big maybe, stuff said on premium boards can have one iota of an impact on a recruit's impression - but even then I'd doubt it. If free board stuff had an impact on recruits we could all go over to Duke's site and talk crap about their recruits and then they wouldn't sign anyone, right?
Look. You guys can blow it off all you want but the fact is many recruits and/or their parents DO read massage boards. That has been covered and mentioned in interviews for years. Some in fact go so far as to buy lurker subscriptions to premium boards of the schools they are considering. Matter of fact there was a thread on the Auburn premium football board a couple weeks ago where an Asst Coach in an interview discussed that very thing. There have also been cases of provocateur trolls purposely inciting a rival school's fans to trash players and/or recruits.
Recruiting is a high-stakes business. Y'all seriously don't understand how nasty and sometimes petty it gets?

If that's the case then we should all do what @Hark_The_Sound_2010 said and go bash these recruits on duke's board. That would kill their recruiting.

Little too simplistic dude! They are saying it is a factor, NOT everything! Why is it so easy to believe that a kid would be narcissistic enough to drop a school for looking at other peeps OR not promising PT, BUT it is hard to believe he would be sensitive to what peeps say about him?

There is no point in debating facts.

I just don't believe that to any extent kids read message boards. They are too busy twittering or whatever you call it and making lists of 10 which at least 6 of which they have very little to no interest.

SPOT-ON!

Couple that with the FACT that Kendall Marshall's Dad posted on 4 Corners often. Other recruits and their parents have not been as open as Dennis was but have been there too. Clint Jackson warns folks about this very thing. It DOES happen and quite frequently.

I know some of you love to bash Gary but he is dead right on this one. Carry on.
