Mack's last chance

Today is Mack's last chance to "right the ship" of his legacy.
A whole lot of UNC people and Chapel Hill people love Mack's legacy: he never made UNC football a true National Power, and he always can lose to a nobody.

No national title here. No ACC titles. What legacy are we referring to exactly?

Get to the doorstep, choke, leave. That’s the Mack Brown story at UNC. We’ve just been so bad at football for so long that even a short run of moderate success stands out.

Let’s save the word ‘Legacy’ for Dean and Roy. They earned it.

He had ONE really good season- 1997. He left before the bowl game. He built a pretty decent program in the 90s... they were competitive. His teams won some bowl games. They always lost to FSU (but most of the ACC lost to FSU).

As far as the second go-round, it's been 50/50-ish. They've been really fun to watch at times. Mack manages to sell a glass-half-full product.

This team, to me, isn't any better than the Howell/Carter/Javonte team. And, that team was fun to watch, but they always come up short.

Mack Brown has been one of UNC's best football coaches, but that's not saying much!

I think Mack takes the top spot for UNC football coaches all time. I’m happy to give him that. But like you said, it’s not saying much.

We've played football for over 100 years. Eight conference championships. Five of those are ACC and they came between the years 1963-1980. That bar is so low you could walk over it. Mack is the Dean/Roy of UNC football.

Your last sentence contradicts the rest. Mack cannot win even 1 ACC championship. He cannot be like guys who won at least 2 national Championships.

UNC Football doesn't have a Dean or Roy. The football program isn't even in the same galaxy as basketball.

Since it seems like most fans have had enough of grandpa Mack who would you like to replace him? Realistically with your answers we aren’t getting Kirby smart or Dave Doreen so don’t even say them.

When Mack steps down he’s going to hand the keys to Chizik.

Surely you and @uncboy10 aren't dense enough to not understand the comparison
Well... there is no comparison. The programs are totally different in terms of success and "legacy." Mack Brown has "won the most", I guess. But, he didn't win anything of any real significance. In fact, when it really counted the most, his teams usually lost.

I already said I think Mack is the greatest UNC football coach of all time. He’s one of the greatest recruiters of all time period. But if he wants to be mentioned in the same conversations as Dean and Roy, he’s got to at least win a conference title.

I'm not saying he's as good as them overall. I'm saying that if the football program were to have to pick someone to be it's Dean/Roy, it would be him. Our program is so blah that the best comp is a guy who hasn't won a conference title.

WE had a guy who won 3 ACC championships and had a vision for how to do for UNC what Charley Pell, nd then Danny Ford, would do for Ceomson. And the ADmin made certain ti run him off.

Mack is no Bill Dooley or Dick Crum with Dooley's players.

but it should be, and should have been a long time ago. The problem now, IMO, is we're stuck with a coach who is the darling of a lot of people who don't care if we are better than mediocre, or at least are willing to accept mediocrity as a tradeoff for having a personable, Mr. Clean kind of coach.

We hired Butch because somebody upstairs got serious about us having top level football for a change. When that regrettably backfired, I'm afraid the opportunity to have a serious program passed us by.

Isn't this year the 2nd year since Mack has been back that he said this is the best coaching staff he's ever had? Do you believe he really thinks that? Or is he trying to convince himself as well as the fans?

Both of the lines are physically weak. Has been for years. Our dline is terrible. Has been for the last 5 years with the same dline coach.

Either our coaches are clueless or our players are too fuggin stupid to play how they are coached.

Nobody on this staff has done anything proving they deserve to be the next head coach
Aint that the truth. But if you talk to one of the many Mack-lovers, they will tell you that Mack is the best football coach in the ACC now, and perhaps the best ever in the state of NC. In fact, he defines HOF. So they would want Mack to coach until he is 100 or demands to retire. And then he picks his replacement.

Mack may be allowed to really ruin UNC football because of those who are under his spell.

Mack is nothing but a seller. He's always selling himself and what he does or chooses as the very best ever, and best possible. You might as well believe everything your favorite used car salesman tells you.

I mean, Mack Is Mack but the program is leaps and bounds in a better place than it was when Fedora left. I said it when they hired Mack the 2nd time, he is the right guy to right the ship and then make the right hire to replace him.

I am sick and tired of hearing mack talk about how other teams may play from one week to the next and all of that BS. Spend more time trying to fix this sh** than worrying about how everyone else is playing. I, and probably most of you here, are really only concerned about UNC period!! Stop trying to be politically correct and all that BS and do something to fix it. I am also tired of hearing him say all the necessary BS to justify losing. Listen I can’t stand dull Dave but dang it he seems to not care about what others think and doesn’t mind saying what may not be politically correct at times. UNC is soft bottom line. Before someone comes at me realize I don’t give a rat’s arse about whether you agree or not with any of this. The last two weeks have been a complete shame just go look at the stats.

They need to go ahead and make that hire. The ship isn't getting more "righter" than it is. They peaked with Sam/Michael Carter/Javonte.

I was waiting for MB to mention Oklahoma losing!

Good thing Kenan Stadium has Carolina blue seats to help camouflage the fact it be may be almost empty this coming weekend

Just cruising the www and fans are clamoring for swinney and Beamer to be fired too any interest? I say without the right hires for the coaching staff it doesn’t matter who the head coach is

Swinney being fired is hilarious. How privileged must you be to abandon a coach that got you 2 national championships within a few years and always in the top 10.

it's apparent to all of us at this point that you have to have player talent, but you also have to have coaching talent. Those who pine for a return to '97...me, for instance...are really pining for a DC like Carl Torbush (or a Denny Marcin under Dick Crum). Carl didn't make it as HC, but he was a hell of a DC. Where are you Carl, now that we really need you?

That being said, it was mostly Mack who recruited the talent. My dream is we get a top notch HC and let Mack be the recruiting guru.

Hell no to Beamer. There's zero indication he's a good head coach. Why would Swinney even consider coming to Chapel Hill?
